City Hall is doing a Mayor s Desk By Dan Wedemeier Hi Everyone! Once again it's white out! We had our 1st measurable snowfall today. It seems too early for this already. It's also too cold out! I don't know about you, but I'm not ready for that either. I am sure that many of you listened to the forecast and had anticipated the white stuff but when I was out early this morning, I noticed that there were quite a few vehicles parked on the city streets. I also saw our Police Chief, Steve, putting reminders on the windshields of those vehicles, reminding them that they shouldn't be there. In the past I've helped Barney and Jim plow the streets and it sure makes it difficult when a vehicle is parked in the street. I also think it would be common curtesy not to place your snow in the street after it has been plowed. I have seen snow fences put up on homeowner s property, which is fine, unless it makes for snow banking up on city streets. Once again, a little consideration for the city and your neighbors would be the important thing to do! The city does put up some snow fences around town to try to keep snow getting on city streets. If you're not sure what's right, please call City Hall and check. At our last monthly council meeting we continued to work towards a new sewer treatment plant. The DNR has approved our site plan. We also heard the city engineering firm on a timetable to follow and started the necessary paperwork to work with the State Revolving Fund. Billy Lemkuhle, the marketing director, and a board member EBRRA, attended the meeting and he presented the council with a 5-year report. This recycling agency has been a very successful venture and I believe all three towns involved are committed to keeping this program going. The council approved several training meetings for Steve, Lois, Jim and Barney. Most of these are required for certification and others are for continuing education. We believe the training will keep our people up-to-date on new and old things. Nicole Barnes reported on the city s Facebook page and said it was picking up customers and "likes." The idea behind this page is to see how much interest/use is out there and help us decide what we should do to up-date our city website. If you don't normally drive out on the north side of, you should take a drive out there. The new sign, along Hwy. 3, is done! The sign is basically brand new and I have talked with the Garden Club and they are going to redo the flowers and bushes next spring. A big thanks to Burton Thies and his crew they did a great job! Speaking of the Garden Club, I think they did a great job on the new greeting sign on the 'rock' across the road Barry Wittenburg's house. BIG THANKS! Barney and Mark Kuker and David Wittenburg went out on the bike trail and cemented a couple pads for benches on the trail. Thanks guys! David has his poles cemented in for his new bike trail greeting sign. He is still working to get the top Continued at right Grump s Grumblings By Jean Buenzow It's beginning to feel like winter is coming. The weather forecast sounds like we might get a touch of snow. We have been having a lot of wind and lots of leaves. One day they blow to the north, the next day to the south. Elementary has three or four programs for the children to work one hour after school, 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. I was asked to help with raking. Two weeks ago they raked leaves for Esther Wittenburg and this Tuesday for Jackie Clemens. Church dinners and suppers are all done, so, girls, we have to cook. Thanksgiving is just around the corner. We have a lot to be thankful for even if we did have the hailstorm. Nobody got hurt bodily, just in the billfold. Grumptober Fest at the was great. Many children were dressed up in many different characters. A prize was given to the winner in each age group. The meal was good and attended by many patrons. The weather was a good time to put the Halloween decorations away for another year. Many children were out for trick or treat. We had a Community Club meeting discussion on the dates and times for coming events for this year and next year. A benefit for Aaron Lalk was held at the Center Inn on October 18. It was well-attended. Aaron was able to attend for awhile. Apples were good this year. I ve been putting some in the freezer and eating a lot of them. I believe in the old saying: "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." In our town, we have more residents having 90th birthdays, and over 90! "Happy Birthday" to everyone. Also "Wedding Anniversary" greetings over 60 years. People must live right in. I am getting excited for the "Christmas on Main Event" December 5 and 6. Let's pray for good weather. I woke up this morning to the wind blowing and snow on the ground. Too early! "Happy Thanksgiving" to everyone. We have the Grump candidates picked out for Grump 2014 Jean Buenzow More the Mayor s Desk part on. Maybe we will get some warmer weather yet this fall so he can get it done! I am very excited for our new Christmas on Main event that's coming up the week after Thanksgiving. I have heard of many great events going on. I'm excited about everyone that's getting involved, like our firemen providing fire pits and s'mores for everyone; and the lighting of the big Christmas tree at the north end of Main Street. The lighted parade will be a fun way to begin the holiday season and it's great to have all the groups and businesses doing activities for everyone. I have also heard of Miss Comments By Ally Klein Dream big and dare to fail. Norman Vaughan I am happy to say that my senior year is still going great and I am having the time of my life. I have finally started the process of applying to college and the first and, probably, only college that I have applied to is Concordia St. Paul up in Minnesota. This is the same college that my oldest sister attended and, when I toured up there with her, I knew walking through the gorgeous campus that this is where I want to futther my education. My application has been sent and my transcript has been mailed so now I am awaiting my ACT scores and then, hopefully, I will see if I get accepted. I am very confident that this is the college that I want to go to and I know that I will have the time of my life up there. My sister had a great time up there and she has told me some of the secrets to getting around and making friends in a new place. Now onto a more embarrassing part of the past month. As many of you know, and some of you don t, I was in a car accident in front of St. Matthew s Church towards the end of October. I wanted to make sure to thank you all for checking on me and seeing if I was okay. After an emergency room visit and several chiropractor visits, I am almost back to normal. They say that I am going to be mostly all right but it will take about two months to get back to my full self because of the head injury, neck sprain and torn muscles. But, all in all, I am feeling better and I am very thankful for the concern and support I received my community. It was very heartwarming to see the love that comes this community in hard times. Sadly, football is over for us. Managing for the team for the last four years has had its ups and downs but I am glad that I kept with it so that I could spend my last senior football game with some of my favorite guys. We had a great year with some great memories and I was so blessed to have shared them with some of my best friends. I will miss all our football players and I can t wait to see the great things that they will do in the future. The seniors this year are a great group of men and they have a bright future. So, all in all, I am having a great time and I am healthy and happy. I was blessed to be one of the judges at the Grumptoberfest Halloween Costume Contest and I have just been informed about some things that I will be doing around Christmas time and I am very excited. I love the interaction I have been getting to have with all the members of the community and I can t wait for many more to come. Thank you for your support and love and all of you have a very happy Thanksgiving! trolley and sleigh rides in town. It sounds like a wonderful winter celebration. Hope you all come and there's still time to get involved. Contact Jess Buck if you have something you would like to do or provide for this fun event. Be sure to stop in at City Hall that night, too. We'll have something warm to drink, a little treat and an LED battery operated Christmas ornament for each family. Remember to count your blessings every day! Use your Celebration of Lights gift certificate here! The GRUMP on the STUMP The Tale of the Elf Watch for the Grump Elf December 5 through December 24! We hope you and your family enjoy finding him each day! At holiday time the city sends me to you. I watch and report on all that you do. My job's an assignment the Mayor himself. I am his helper, a grumpy, old Christmas elf. Each night while you're sleeping, to city hall I will fly. Right down Main Street through the darkened night sky. Of course Christmas magic helps me to go fast So I can report my findings to the Mayor at last. I report if all ites have been good or been bad. The news of the day may make him happy or sad. An un-shoveled driveway I'll report to "the Boss" And all acts of kindness will not be a loss. In the car, at the park, or even at school The word will get out if you ve broken a rule. I'll be somewhere in town before you awake. And then you must find the new spot I will take. You'll jump out of bed and come running to see Who'll be the first to spy grumpy, old me? Maybe the library, the park or on a tree stump Is where you will find me, the old grump. I can hide on a bench or a large window frame Where will I be? Let's make it a game! There's only one rule that you all have to follow So I will come back to your fine town tomorrow. Please, do not touch me. My magic may go. And the Mayor won't hear all I've seen or I know. I won't get to tell him you ve said all your prayers Or decorated your house or displayed all your cares. How will he know how good you have been That you haven't been arrested or drank all the gin? I can't speak to you, so you won't hear me grumble And please be careful when near me; I don't want you to stumble. But I'll listen to you so tell me all of your wishes. Would you like to start a new business selling pots, pans and dishes? The glare in my eye and the grump in my frown May not be inviting but I won't let you down. The final decision in the Mayor now rests. Are you a good ite? Will you get your request? The night before Christmas my job's at an end The rest of the year in city hall I will spend. So blow me a kiss and bid me farewell. For I will be gone at the sound of the Christmas bell. Of course you might miss me but wait til next year When the holidays come I again will appear Until then I wish all ites, girl or boy A Christmas of peace and a year full of joy. Emerald Ash Borer meeting at Library by Isu Extension The invasive insect pest, the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), was identified in Bremer and Black Hawk Counties in early 2014, and is considered to be one of the most destructive tree pests ever seen in North America. To help homeowners and citizens understand this challenge, the Bremer ISU Extension office has been hosting free public meetings, including one coming to the Library on Thursday, January 8 6:30-7:30 pm. EAB has killed millions of ash trees in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, and has spread to 21 states. The pest is listed as present in 12 Iowa counties, and the list keeps growing. Topics at the meeting to be covered include: Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) identification of adults and larvae, symptoms of EAB infected ash trees, possible preventative treatments, future tree diversity plantings, homesteads vs. woodlots. Speaker will be Ron Lenth, Bremer Extension Coordinator for Iowa State University Extension. According to the US Forest Service, Iowa has an estimated 52 million rural ash trees and approximately another 3.1 million she trees in urban areas. The larvae damages by disrupting the flow of nutrients and water to the tree, and slowly kills its host. Grümptoberfest! is Savings s small token of gratitude for the trust that the customers in the community have in the. RSB is honored to serve and support the community. The party is a good opportunity for friends, family, and neighbors to gather and, since the first instituted GRÜMPTOBERFEST! in 2005, the event has become a nice little harvest-time celebration. Plus, the kids get to fine-tune their costumes before the main event of Halloween! New to 2014 was the Pumpkin Decorating Contest where contestants of all ages entered pumpkins either carved or painted with varying themes. Thank you to this year s judge s panel which included current Grump Jean Buenzow and former Grumps Harriett Risse and Garylee Thurm. Many thanks to all who entered and we hope to see what creative minds dream up next year! Many people helped RSB make the party a success. Jim and Bev Collins and staff at Sunrise Catering once again prepared a great meal. The Wapsie Valley FFA students provided assistance throughout the evening carrying trays, clearing tables and being the extra hands needed in many occasions. A thank you to Kevin and Juliet Toulouse of the Center Inn Firehouse Bar & Grill for providing a wonderful place for this annual party. RSB directors, officers, staff and spouses served the meal. The schools and churches helped again with spreading the word of the event. They included supporters of all interests: alumni, veteran and new; loyal community supporters; teachers; administrators; school board members; WVEF board members, and the interested public. Once again event fundraising goals were met; and an exciting, new social media approach was launched. Organizers reported that the event raised over $20,000 for the district schools in Fairbank and to use during the Ag coming school year. Last year there were sixteen grants submitted by twenty-five educators. All grants were fully or partially accepted. Grant requests last year were either individual requests or group requests, and they originated each of the building centers. The projects, equipment needs, and field trips varied among departments. Each applicant was required in the grant request to supplement or advance educational goals for the district that would meet the expectations of a twenty-first century curriculum. A list of those awarded grants was printed on the program. In addition to meeting grant requests, the WVEF awarded eleven scholarships to graduating seniors. The scholarships either originated foundation money or came through scholarships outside sources who wished to continue or establish scholarships. It is a testament to community pride that we can be this successful with this event every November." Wapsie Valley Superintendent Chad Garber agreed with VanDaele s assessment and spoke to the crowd, advocating that it is this kind of team effort the community and school system that is needed for continuing success with a demanding Iowa Core Curriculum and with the district expectation that Wapsie Valley will always be among the leaders in educational delivery. The foundation with its ten active board members, including Superintendent Garber, intend to extend fundraising efforts beyond this annual event. In fact, three enthusiastic, gifted Wapsie Valley students researched and created a Facebook social media page for the foundation that The Jig & Fly Shop and Gary s Wood & Craft Garylee Thurm 405 5th St. Place, (319) will extend fundraising opportunities for alumni across the United States. Two of the three students, Kassidy Kuhlmann and Jacob Hammitt, published the page just before the dinner/auction, projected it onto a wall, and explained its features and goals throughout the silent auction and dinner. By the next day, well over one hundred likes had appeared on the page. The third student volunteer was Madison McDaniel, who was on a college visit. A donation button currently appears on the Wapsie Valley Website Foundation Page, and another will be placed on the Facebook page in the near future. The students did a wonderful job with the Facebook design and content, board member Annette Hyde volunteered. Every pew is filled on Christmas Eve or Easter Sunday. When the Sunday School children or parochial school students are singing the seats teem with parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Weddings are standing room only occasions, as are some funerals. Invariably parishioners who attend quite regularly and are accustomed to empty seats will say to one another and to their pastor, Isn t it nice to see the church full today? I get what you re saying, and I agree. But I also notice something that we are forgetting: The church is always full. The invisible, inaudible choir of angels sings with us. The hidden host of heaven adds its highest praises. Our eyes may not see them. Our ears may not hear them. But we are never alone. The church is never empty. At the end of the proper preface in the Communion liturgy the pastor will say, together with angels, and archangels, and all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying and we sing the Sanctus (Holy, Holy, Holy) that is sung by the choir of cherubim in Isaiah 6. What a joy and privilege it is to sing with such an enumerable choir. On this side of heaven, however, it is easy to be discouraged. Too often we are convinced that what our eyes see and what our ears hear is all there is. We do not see angels or archangels. We do not hear the company of heaven that includes our loved ones whose souls are with the Lord. So we deceive ourselves into thinking they are not there with us. And we become embarrassed or even ashamed of our worship. But God is WITH us as He promises (Matt. 28:20). If those angels and the Helping Hands Clothing Closet 2029 Viking Ave. Hwy. So do not lose heart or become discourage by what your eyes see and what your ears hear. Believe, instead, what the Word of God declares to be true: God is with us in the Divine Service to speak His Word, to forgive our sins in the Sacrament of the Altar, and to bring all of Heaven with Him into that Holy Communion. Be bold and thankful for what we have received. It s easy to look at the bigger churches and covet something of theirs. It is even easier (and perhaps more appropriate) to look with fear and contempt at the false religions that steal people the pews on Sunday morning- the False Sanctuary of Sports with their thousands and millions in attendance each Sunday across the country. In the words of the Prophet Elisha to his terrified servant, Do not be afraid, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them (2 Kings 6:16). That story is one we in the Church should relearn before we become fearful or ashamed of what appears to be small numbers and shrinking church attendance. The Syrian army camps around the man of God, and when the servant of Elisha cries out, Alas! My master, what shall we do? Elisha calms him with those words, Do not be afraid, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them. Then Elisha prays that the Lord would open his servant s eyes to see what is unseen to that servant and to us: and he saw, and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. Dear Christians, we are not alone. The Church is never empty. The Lord will fight for His church and will provide for us. 7 Page 12 Chronicle Wednesday, November 26, 2014 Wednesday, November 26, 2014 Chronicle Page 13 87th National Convention makes WV GO ALL OUT! RTC LOCAL COMMUNITY CUSTOMER TRUST ENGAGED EXPERIENCE COMMITMENT INNOVATIVE PROGRESSIVE TECHNOLOGY LOYALTY CONFIDENCE SERVICE By Kassidy Kuhlmann, Chapter Reporter Rowdy. Talkative. Never still. Yes, teenagers. Now, take that one teenager and multiply it by 60,000. That is the number of FFA members that invaded the Louisville, Kentucky area this last week. Nineteen Wapsie Valley FFA members made the twelve hour trek across part of the US to reach the largest juvenile gathering in the entire world. The members went on tours and listened to some incredible speakers who made some key feelings and events in life come into focus. The chapter also received prestigious awards as well as spoke about agriculture in Iowa. The members reached Louisville and were welcomed to the 87th National FFA Convention by mayor, Greg Fischer. The convention was home to members all 50 states as well as the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. The theme for the week was, Go all out! Which was exactly what the FFA members the across the country did. For many of the kids, it was the first time they had been out of the state without their parents, but that didn t stop them being totally and completely captivated by the experiences and the sights they were exposed to. The group attended tours that were completely out of their world, or should I say out of their own little small towns. Members visited a very well run tobacco farm and learned the ins and outs of the trade. They got the opportunity to see what a normal day at the farm looked like and were shown around the production. The students gained insight into regulations and restrictions the visiting workers were under while employed within the country. The tobacco farm was not only interesting because of the production aspect but coupled with the working and maintenance side of it as well. The group also went through a marshmallow plant that produced gourmet marshmallows as well as doubled as a catering service. The kids and drivers alike got to make their own marshmallows as well as bring a bag with them home to share! The final tour was to Churchill Downs where the members got to learn about the history of such an old sport. Many of the students didn t realize the way in which many people differ as they get out of their small town they ve always known. Members got the privilege to listen to some amazing people who have had their fair share of downs within life. Nick Vujicic was a moving speaker and brought people to tears. Nick was born with no arms or legs, faced depression, had suicidal thoughts, and hated life. It took one person to make him treasure life for what it was and reminded the audience that life does get better. He made a statement that touched the hearts of many as he explained the moment when he realized he loved his wife, I don t need hands to hold her heart. He shed some light on the problems some kids face and how to overcome them. He showed the 52,346 members and guests what it was really like to persevere and make everyday count. National convention The next speaker brought those in attendance to tears of joy and laughter. Jane Herlong made the member travel back with her in time to the moments when she felt 2 feet tall. She had a way of captivating the masses with her funny stories of the past as she made all of those moments when most would ve hung their heads and gave up into a story that made many roll on the floor laughing. Jane made the FFA members laugh but also taught the kids how to take life lightly and how your outlook on a situation can be altered due to the way you view it. Along with all the exciting tours to kick off the week the members played a crucial role in informing the convention spectators about agriculture in Iowa. Wapsie brought a large display to Kentucky where facts about agriculture were displayed. Students took turns telling bystanders about how Iowa was number one in: swine, wind energy, soybeans, corn, and egg production. The group found it intriguing to see what out of state people thought about Iowa. On more than one account members were asked if corn was consumed at every meal, if we wore regular clothes, and if they had internet in Iowa. The comments and ques- Continued on Page 13 Continued Page 12 tions kept on coming and the reaction of what Iowa actually was made the experience all the better. Not only was talking at the display a fun pastime, it was also fun to see the way people were surprised about how agriculture in Iowa played a crucial role in feeding the world. The real highlight was watching the Wapsie Valley Parliamentary Procedure team perform as they represented all of Iowa. The Parliamentary Procedure team was comprised of all juniors, Jarod Bodensteiner, Isaac Brownell, Gabby Power, Baylee Klietsch, Emily Martins, Annette Klietsch, Dylan Lampe, and Reegan Platte. The team competed on Thursday morning as well, taking an hour and half long test to assess their skills. This exam was the test which makes them certified Parliamentarians. Out of the seven on the team, four of them passed. This was an amazing feat especially given that less than 50% passed the test. The Parli team did not advance on first round but they were happy to have made it that far. The team commented on the close knit bond they had created over the past years. Dylan Lampe shares, There were times when I never felt like going home because I knew I would be missing these guys shortly after. I m proud of how far we went but a little sad that I will not be spending as much time with them as I used too. The Parli team has been together since freshman year, endured early morning practices, and late night study sessions, they have become one group that will never be able to fully tell each other goodbye. Along with the Parliamentary Procedure team representing Wapsie, the school had a senior, Marina Hilbert, perform in the National FFA Chorus. Only 100 FFA members across the nation are able to receive this honor annually. In addition to Marina s honor, there were also five members who received the highest honor the FFA can give a member. Gabby Wittenberg, Dani Gordon, Heather Sommerfelt, Brooke Miller, and Abrah Meyer obtained their American degree. This degree is a very prestigious honor and one that is hard to get. The member needs to have productively invested and earned $7,500 into their Supervised Agricultural Experience. The Wapsie Valley FFA chapter also received an award that takes the cake. Wapsie FFA was awarded a three star rating, meaning their chapter was very prestigious. Out of the 7,665 chapters in the nation, less than 8% of those receive this award. In order to receive this award the chapter as a whole needs to excel in areas of student, community, and chapter. The trip was a long one, with early mornings and late nights, but it was one that made members grow personally. There were many who commented on how they could see themselves living in Kentucky and others who thought the smell of corn being harvested was a welcomed scent. Jarod Bodensteiner mentioned, Nationals was great, I enjoyed all the great speakers and the national officers which encouraged me to go all out. The week was a learning and uplifting experience for all! Gabby Wittenburg, Abrah Meyer, Dani Gordon, and Heather Sommerfelt were awarded their hard earned Americans Degrees! 8 Page 14 Chronicle Wednesday, November 26, 2014 Wednesday, November 26, 2014 Chronicle Page 15 News Community Lutheran School The Forsyth family won 1st place for the Trunk or Treat contest. Give thanks always! Giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, ~ Ephesians 5:20 We have so much to be thankful for here at CLS! First and foremost, we are absolutely grateful that we get to receive God s Word through our devotions each and every day. What a blessing! Each class continues to use Prayer daily devotions and daily we recite Luther s Morning Prayer, the Lord s Prayer and the Apostles Creed. Also, we are grateful for our teachers and staff because they work so hard to not only teach the daily subjects, but to teach and nourish the faith of our students. We are likewise truly thankful for the congregations (St. Paul s and Immanuel Lutheran) that make our school their mission. There is so much to be thankful for, we cannot count the reasons! A very exciting event that will be happening soon at both buildings is the addition of some new playground equipment. While it may take a large crew of some hard workers and a few hours, we are very thankful for this project and everyone that is making it possible. Be sure to check it out when it is completed! Last month we had a number of events to be thankful for! We started our weekly open gym nights, which is great because it gives CLS families an opportunity to meet one another and it gives the little ones (and big ones) time to get out and wiggle! Our 2nd annual Trunk or Treat was also held in October. It was a wonderful turnout this year. We had nine trunks decorated and lots of kids came through to get their treats and vote for their favorite trunk. Some trunks even ran out of candy! Congratulations to the Schutte family for placing 2nd in the trunk contest and to the Forsyth family for winning the big prize! It was great to see everyone in the community enjoying the weather and the social event! Another event that took place was the IDE Conference volleyball tournament. With the help of Coach Marissa Shinstine, our girls took home 3rd place. We are so proud of both our football and volleyball teams. Go Wildcats! At the start of November, we were fortunate to have a day to celebrate Reformation Day with the help of the 7th and 8th graders. At the beginning of this fun filled afternoon, the 7th & 8th graders welcomed everyone and then they lead us with a brief prayer. At that point every student in grades Pre-K through 5th was designated to a team with students of all ages and there each team went to different stations throughout the Klinger building. Anna Richards lead the Baptismal Apple Dunk station where the students bobbed for apples. Sloane Banger had the Pin the Theses on the Door station where students played a game similar to Pin the Tail on the Donkey but it symbolized the nailing of the 95th Theses on the church door. An arts and crafts station was led by Trystan Lampe, and here the students decorated Continued on the next page Give thanks Continued the previous page Luther s Seal (a symbol for Lutheranism). The snack station was interesting because it was titled Diet of Worms. However, Jackson Nading explained how Martin Luther went to Worms, Germany where he went before a deliberative assembly regarding the nailing of the 95 Theses. This event was referred to as the Diet of Worms. But our students snack was a yummy surprise of dirt pudding and gummy worms! Finally, Mikenna Joerger led the Law & Gospel Obstacle Course. This proved to be a tough course but the students had it easy because the puzzles involved some of their memory work! Lastly, all the teams had to collect puzzle pieces each station and at the ending ceremony each team got to put their puzzle together and then all the teams stacked their puzzles and it made up Luther s Seal. It was great to watch the students interact and learn together while celebrating Reformation Day! Another event that happens throughout the year that we are very thankful for is singing at the Sunday morning church service. Our students sang at St. Paul s 8:30 a.m. service on November 9, and, again, they all did a wonderful job. We really want to thank those who attended the service and we hope you enjoyed the students lovely singing voices! If you would like to hear their great singing voices once more please attend our Christmas Dinner and Musical on Wednesday, December 17. The dinner will be held 5 to 6:15 p.m, as well as a bake sale. At 6:30 p.m. our 3- and 4-year-old preschoolers will perform a variety of songs and then our Pre-K through 8th grades will perform the musical titled Christmas Hang-ups which is written by Dennis and Nan Allen. Look for our float in the lighted parade on December 5 promoting this musical. It should be a great event and we hope to see you there! We have so many things to be thankful for at CLS and we want to continue our gratitude into the next monthspecifically since we are reminded of the birth of our Lord Jesus who gave His life and won the victory over sin, death and the devil! So, as we enter this Christmas time, let s all be reminded that He is the reason for the season! The Schutte family placed 2nd in the Trunk or Treat contest. The Wildcat girls placed 3rd at the IDE Conference Tournament! The students decorated Martin Luther s Seal during the Reformation Day celebration. Both VanDaele and Garber attributed much the fundraising success of the foundation over the years to the foundation creator, Carlene Werner, who, as a lifelong educational supporter of Wapsie Valley, had the foresight and energy to propel her dream to support the school system with community monetary contributions. Smiled Sylvia Casterton, Who would not follow the wonderful leadership she provided." Casterton, along with Traeger; Bob Bellis; and Joey Rigdon, treasurer, have been on board since day one. Recently appointed board members include VanDaele; Micha Matthias, Vice President; Hyde; Kim Brown; Kristi Marticoff; and Steve Phelan. Kurt Leistikow is the foundation attorney. We plan to provide full effort for fundraising in the future, and we hope to attract even more contributors, VanDaele promised. I have always loved and believed in the community. This event continues to amaze me each year. In addition to the many community auction donations and the large number of event volunteers, many of who are teachers, the dinner/auction is annually an entertaining show in itself. Dolan Burreson, who has been the auctioneer for many years, easily jokes and spurs his audience to participate. Once again this year the audience buzzed happily about his showmanship. At evening s end, everyone appeared happy, including those who had contributed auction items, those who had connected with donors; the board who saw their efforts fulfilled; and, especially, the educators who would soon realize that the current dreams for their classrooms would be realized. As the years before and the promises of years to come, the proud Wapsie Valley supporters exited the American Legion Hall with stomachs full, with the pride of support, and with optimism for the future. Season of giving? Even the first snowflakes of the season filtered down among the streetlights and contributed to exactly that mood. New Members at St. Matthew, Sunday, November 16, 2014, St. Matthew Lutheran Church,, welcomed 14 new members to their congregation. In addition to historical information about the institution and farm which was established after the Civil War, the books have personal stories of the people who had the overwhelming job of managing the facility; residents who spent much of their lives there; workers who became a part of the family atmosphere; and children who remember what their lives were like. Early pictures and newspaper articles as well as a section of favorite recipes are also included. You can read about the horrifying night when a young mother shot and killed two of her four children, then went to other cottages and tried to kill others. And, you can follow the struggles against government regulations that literally defeated everyone. Shown are, left to right, Levi, Cara, Landon and Mike Rice, Pastor Mark Lund, Oliver, Donavon, Marshall, Haley and Nick Tiedt, Mark, Sherry and Rachael Schumacher, and Connie and Bill Thompson. everything the Poor Farm had represented over the years. A few copies of the books are still available for sale at the First State of Sumner, Farmer's of Frederika, Meyer Drug in Waverly, Inspired in, My Other Home Antiques in Tripoli, Mary Buls ( , and Denver Pharmacy in Denver. Cost of the 192-page spiral bound book is $25 and proceeds go toward paying for restoration and upkeep at The Poor Farm.
