6 CHURCH COMMISSION REPORTS 2015 CHURCH CONNECTION No report submitted CHURCH HOME Dave Huebner (2015) and Randy DeBoer (2016) We started the year with some snow and hired Mr. Theodosopoulos to plow the snow in the parking lot and the sidewalks. He failed to send us a bill which helped financially, but we only had snow 23 times. We had Swede's Electric check the circuits. He installed a larger circuit breaker in the kitchen so the breaker does not rip as much when we have a potluck meal. Some overhead bulbs were replaced. The lawn was mowed this summer mostly by the Marshall family. That was much appreciated. Randy DeBoer also mowed some. Randy is tuning up the church mower for next summer. A water line was installed to the Memorial Garden. Benches were also placed in the garden. The water line is still not tapped into the building, but usable with another hose connected. The leaves in the hedges were cleaned up several times by Dave, Julie, Susan, Jean, Leonard and others. The carpets were cleaned thanks to Christy, Darlene, and Sue. The flowers looked nice east and west of the front door. The hedge was also trimmed and the wild elm trees removed from the front hedges. With extra rain this year, the short hedge row came back to life. Mr. Theodosopoulos was hired again this year for snow removal. Randy made a few items for the church Christmas Program. Tables and chairs were borrowed from Faith Reformed or moved around in the sanctuary for Thanksgiving, Empty Bowls, rummage sale, craft sale, and carpet cleaning. Several "door closers" were tuned up by Midwest Glass. There is a bulb out over the altar. We still have no plan to replace them due to difficulty. The roof was checked for leaks. Randy cleaned the roof gutters. There is a new clock in the Education wing. Submitted by: Dave Huebner CHURCH LIFE Darlene Dokken (2014) and Peg Schemmel (2014) Christian Education We held a service on Ash Wednesday. The weekly Wednesday sessions dealt with A Faithful Response. The BUCC served the meal at the Harvest Table on March 30. There was an Easter egg hunt at the church as well as Easter Breakfast and worship. We did not have Vacation Bible School. Most children spent a very busy summer. In August we sent out notices that Sunday School would begin. There were only a couple of children who came for the rally day. Sue Hay was the teacher of SS. In December Sue and her family moved to Iowa so Kristi Prunty is now instructing. Because the group is made up of very young children, Kristi has been doing mainly crafts relating to church. Peg Schemmel created a children s Christmas program which focused around the meaning of each letter of CHRISTMAS. Adult Education Pastor Schemmel leads a Bible study on Wednesdays. On Sunday morning the group is discussing a book titled, Amazing Grace by Kathleen Norris. 6

7 Spiritual Life of the church In the spring around Arbor Day the youth held a celebration of nature. They planted a tree. The worship for the day celebrated nature and its benefits. This fall the youth attended some events at the college. One such event was when the group went to the discussion of the film Hoop Dreams. It was a documentary about the role that basketball plays in the lives of innercity children. It makes each day a better day and one to get up for. Part of the group attended the Hunger Banquet held on campus. In November the group attended a forum on Wes Moore and how he was able to change his life. BUCC also hosted a Rummage Sale that raised to offset church costs for employee wages. At Thanksgiving time the group came together and decorated the tables for Thanksgiving. The group made some salads plus some dessert items for the Thanksgiving Day meal. Part of the youth helped to serve the people who came together for Thanksgiving Day meal. On Christmas Eve, candlelight worship was held. We held 3 diaper showers for 3 mothers to be. The congregation continues to send birthday and anniversary cards to members. If you know of someone that we are missing or if we are missing you, please tell Darlene and she can add your name to the list. Pastor Schemmel gave the message at the Summer Arts Festival. The service was well attended. Empty Bowls was held. The event had a Spanish theme. The money that was raised went to 4 different food distribution agencies in Brookings County. The four agencies were the Brookings County Food Pantry, Feeding Brookings, Brookings Backpack Project, and Harvest Table was given to each organization. Ingrid MertzMeyer was baptized on December 27 th. The ministry teams were reorganized. Hopefully to make the groups more equal with the number of participants. The church was the host site for Life Line Screening and also for a Red Cross blood drive. Submitted by: Peg Schemmel and Darlene Dokken CHURCH OUTREACH Julie Huebner (2014) and Marlene DeBoer (2015) We gave 25 blankets and hygiene products for foster care. In April, we handed out blue ribbons in support of Child Abuse Awareness month. In November, we had our 2 nd Annual Craft and Bake Sale held at the church. We rose over which included quilt raffle ticket sales, baked good sales, and vendor table rent. In December, we went and bought Christmas presents for 21foster children and delivered them to Child Protective Services to be given out on Christmas. We will also be starting to send the foster children birthday cards signed by members of the church in BUCC will continue its work with Child Protective Services in the coming year and offer help where we can. Submitted by: Marlene DeBoer EMPTY BOWLS Dave Huebner The 12 th Annual Empty Bowls Empty bowls was a success, around 5000 was raised for the food related needs of Brookings. Food Pantry, Feeding Brookings, Harvest Table, and Brookings Back Pack Project were each given Approximately 300 was set aside for local needs including requests for food, medicine, rent, or utilities requested from our church in Brookings. There were about 1000 in expenses Speaker & publicity. The "Latin" theme was successful due to the efforts of Marisol. Marisol was able to help with decoration & 7

8 obtained a contribution from Guadalajara s Restaurant. Guadalajara's donated chips & Salsa as hors d'oeuvres for the guests. The speaker was Fred Kirschenmann who spoke on Sustainability & agriculture. Terrillo & the Waristas" (Spence Terrill) provided some lively music for our guests. Thanks to all the folks who helped move chairs, tables & decorations. & a supper thanks to Aramark & the SDSU Hospitality club that provided the food, dishes & linen. Submitted by: Dave Huebner BROOKINGS BACKPACK PROJECT 2015 September 2009, the Brookings Backpack Project (BBP) began providing weekend supplemental foods to children in the Brookings public schools and Head Start. At that time 80 children were reached each week. To date we are providing over 400 food bags each week. At this time there are no income requirements for BBP participation. Paid staff members oversee the project and coordinate volunteers who continue to perform the majority of the project s work. The project allots 42.5 paid hours per week divided among three contracted individuals. Cathy Ching, Project Coordinator (25 hours) Ashley Dahl, Volunteer Coordinator/Bookkeeper (7.5 hours) Rae Ann Thompson, Food Coordinator (10 hours) A laptop was purchased for the bookkeeper along with Quick Books to make the financial process more exact and access to reports for grant writing. The 2015 expenses for BBP s operation were 76, Staff salaries were 29, (slightly higher because of an addition 2.5 hours for bookkeeping and double salaries paid out during food coordinator transition). Generous donations in 2015 contributed to the continued expansion and daily operations of BBP. 83, was donated from individuals, churches, organizations, businesses and grants. The summer program provided food bags for approximately 100 children per week from Brookings County. Families picked up the food bags at the packing site. A reminder was sent out weekly. Packing parties continue to take place each Wednesday evening for the preparation of the food bags. Additional volunteers unload groceries, deliver fruit, and deliver the food bags each week to the schools and Head Start. We held a Quarter Craze Fund Raiser in December, raising over We also received in the past week two donations, one from the Flatlanders Militiamen for and another from Starbucks for almost Future plans include having a spring and fall fund raiser annually. We are also in the process of applying for a separate 501 (c) 3 this year so we have access to more funding as was discussed at the BUCC meeting I attended recently. Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws are finished so far. We have three new Board Members serving on the Executive Board, Tim Steffensen, Sandy Bruinsma and Darlene Dokken. The BBP team is truly grateful to the Brookings United Church of Christ for not only serving as the fiscal host, but also for your generous and continuous support. 9 MODERATOR S REPORT Kristi Prunty (2015) I must say this year has gone by fast as your moderator. As I reflect on how much our members have done for our community; being the first church that is Open and Affirming for everyone, helping the foster children to feeding our community members, I am amazed. Every time the council asked for your help you were willing help make it a success. I want to thank the Mission Statement Committee for their dedication ensuring that our church would not exclude anyone for anything. While many might not think this is a huge deal, I beg to differ, if you have been excluded due to race, religion, sex or sexual orientation being welcome and accepted into a church family is a relief for the individual. The flag that is flown on the front of our church shows our community we care and love all God s children. The work of the Faithful Crafters in helping children in foster care not only helps the child but the Foster Care system. Their fundraising and work making blankets prove to the children there are many people who care for them even if we don t personally know each other. The child care counselors also now know that there is a group of women that will get whatever the child needs to succeed. This past year our Empty Bowls Committee decided to help out our community instead of Heifer International. The committee rose about the same amount of money and instead of getting an Ark plaque, they were able to give the raised funds to the Food Pantry, Harvest Table and the Backpack Project. The event had a Mexican theme and was attended by many community members. These are just a few things our church members did for the community this past year and the council appreciates their time and efforts. It is our work for the community that enriches our church and makes me proud to be your moderator. Until next year, God Bless you and our church. Submitted by: Kristi Prunty PASTOR S REPORT Rev. Wade Schemmel (2013) As I begin this report let me take the opportunity to state our gratitude for the opportunity to share in ministry among you. It has been our privilege the past 2 and a half years to share in your good times and those that are challenging. For the opportunity to share the message of God s love and to explore together ways to live out that message I thank you. The past year has been filled with a host of interesting and exciting times, not the least of which was the vote at last year s annual meeting to become and open and affirming church. Becoming Open and Affirming was a declaration that we as part of the body of Christ are seeking to live out God s vision of radical hospitality. We declared this as our faith stance when we voted to accept the revised mission statement. The art festival was a success with many visitors coming to the booths to look at and to buy and also to share in the baked goods and lunch. The display area was busy with shoppers picking up some early Christmas gifts. This event brings joy to many including the foster children that we can serve with the proceeds from this event. I am looking forward to expanding that ministry as we continue to move into our future. 9

10 The Empty Bowl was changed slightly this year thanks to the work of many and the generosity of those in attendance we were able to raise over 5,000 to help feed the hungry of Brookings. The money is being currently delivered to four perspective recipients, Harvest Table, Feeding Brookings, Brookings Food shelves and the Back Pack Project. The thanksgiving Dinner was an opportunity to welcome the people of Brookings to our house to share a meal. We served well over 100 men women and children who enjoyed good food, good fellowship and an allaround good time. The conversation in the room was like we hear in many of our homes as we gather and the children were having a great time at the craft table. One of the strong messages that this church shared during the past year was through the writing of the mission statement. The statement is a strong declaration that challenges us to live out its vision in our congregational life. The statement means that we welcome with hope, forgiveness, celebration all of God s children regardless of their color, sexual orientation or language. This is a challenge we face not only in worship but in the very life and fiber of our congregation, in our administration, decision making and mission implementation. Mission statements are not only a declaration to the world of who we are but they are also a guide to us as we continue our faith journey. One of my hopes for this coming year to find ways to celebrate God s gracious presence in more exciting and engaging ways. I am hoping that we can bring new life to our times of worship through greater use of music as well as some changes in the meditation time. Over the past years I have come to understand that the a strong source of inspiration and vision for our congregation is through outreach, therefore I am looking for ways to enrich and empower the outreach the mission of our congregation to the foster care, the hungry, and the homeless of our community. This may call for increased participation in the food carts in the front of the worship area. This past year we had to have a special second mils fund drive to balance the budget. While I am grateful for your generous response, I am looking forward a way to balance that budget without having to do a special drive. I am hoping that together we will find a way to increase our financial picture so that our obligations will be covered. Finally, Peg and I look forward to joining you in facing and living through the challenges of the coming year. We are excited by the possibility of sharing in your lives individually and as a community of faith. God is calling us to an exciting ministry and with God s help and grace we will find the means and strength to carry it out. 10
