Confederate Trivia by Georgia Fleming Can you match these legislative acts passed by the U.S. Congress in the years before the War Between the States to an explanation of their provisions? 1. Kansas-Nebraska Act (1854) 2. "Tariff of Abominations" (1828) 3. Force Bill (1833) 4. Missouri Compromise (1820) 5. Compromise of Compromise Tariff (1833) a b c d e f Prohibited slavery in the former Louisiana Territory north of the parallel 36 30' north, except within the boundaries of the proposed state of Missouri. California was admitted as a free state; the Utah Territory and New Mexico Territory were organized with slavery to be decided by popular sovereignty; the boundaries of Texas were set at their present form. Allowed people in the territories of Kansas and Nebraska to decide the slavery issue by popular sovereignty; in effect, it repealed the Missouri Compromise. Expanded presidential power, designed to allow President Andrew Jackson to compel South Carolina to comply with federal tariffs, including deploying the U.S. Army. Proposed by Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun, it gradually reduced tariff rates to accommodate the South's objections to protectionism. Protected northern industries by taxing imported goods; had the effect of raising the prices of goods imported by the South. The resulting decline in British exports reduced the ability of the British to pay for imported Southern cotton. To you, Sons of Confederate Veterans we will commit the vindication of the cause for which we fought, to your strength will be given the defense of the Confederate soldier s good name, the guardianship of his history, the emulation of his virtues, the perpetuation of those principles which he loves and which you love also, and those ideals which made him glorious and which you also cherish. Lt. Gen. Stephen D. Lee, Commander General, United Confederate Veterans New Orleans, Louisiana

5 "If it is a crime to love the South, its cause, and its President, then I am a criminal. I am in your power, do with me as you please. But I fear you not. I would rather lie down in this prison and die than leave it owing allegiance to a government such as yours." Belle Boyd, refusing to take the Oath of Allegiance Trivia Answers (1) Kansas-Nebraska Act - c; (2) Tariff of Abominations - f; (3) Force Bill - d; (4) Missouri Compromise - a; (5) Compromise of b; (6) Compromise Tariff - e Important Reminders SCV dues are due at the July meeting.
