1 Descendants of Aurie Kanaghowende Hill Generation No AURIE KANAGHOWENDE 1 HILL was born Abt in pr. Ossernenon, South Bank, Mohawk Valley, New York, USA, and died Aft. December 28, 1735 in pr. Auriesville, NY, USA. He married CATHARINAH, daughter of SARAH. She was born Abt in pr. South Bank, Mohawk Valley, New York, USA. Notes for AURIE KANAGHOWENDE HILL: Aurie (Arie) was baptised with his wife Catharina, mother Maria, and mother - in - law Sarah at the Schenectady Dutch Reformed Church, 05 October He is the progenitor of the very prolific Hill family which are still numerous today both on the Six Nations Reserve in Brant County, and the Tyendinaga Reserve in Hastings County, Ontario, Canada. In addition, there are numerous descendants of many surnames now spread across North America and beyond. It appears that Aurie's Creek in Montgomery County, New York, on the Mohawk Flats across from the Lower Mohawk Village on the west side of Schoharie Creek was named after this man. Even in much later times it was recalled that the creek derived it's name from, The creek flows by a hill with a sharp perpendicular wall known as Caudaughrita. It appears that family derived its surname from the geographical circumstance of residing near this hill. Two separate accounts provided by Hill family members in the nineteenth century give this same story of how the surname came into being. This version gains support from eighteenth century record sources as diverse as the Papers of Sir William Johnson and the Jelles Fonda Account Books. Here Aaron is referred to as "of the hill" by Johnson in English, and as "van der barrick" by Fonda in Dutch. Both have exactly the same meaning. By the end of the eighteenth century the "of the" had been dropped, and the surname became simply "Hill". 7 Notes for CATHARINA KAYAKHON HILL: It is likely that had Catharina lived, she would, as the eldest daughter of a Clan Matron, have inherited the title and responsibilites for the hereditary Bear Clan title, Aghstawenserontha - which title was upon her brother Seth after the death of his uncle, David, no doubt by the latter's eldest sister, and Seth and Catharina's mother, Mary. According to Mohawk tradition, in all probability the title would have descended to Catharina's eldest son Abraham Young (if he chose to accept the responsibility).
