3 S T O R Y The Greatest ove of All The children will hear this week s ible Story about Jesus last supper with his disciples. Materials For the teacher: 1 piece of black construction paper, 12" x 18" 1 large piece of cardboard, at least 12" x 18" magazine pictures of people doing chores (e.g., housecleaning, mopping, scrubbing, taking out the trash, changing diapers, etc.) glue stick scissors 6 index cards, 3" x 5" Preparation 1. Cut out as many different pictures as you can of people doing different household chores and glue them to the black construction paper. 2. Mount the construction paper collage to the cardboard. 3. Neatly print the following words on the index cards: love, servant, teacher, master, example, understand. 4. Practice presenting this ible Story. ntroducing the ible Story Open your ible to John 13. Tell the children that this week s ible Story comes from the New Testament book or gospel of John. Have the children turn in their ibles to John 13. Prepare the children for today s ible Story by asking the following questions: When someone we love goes away or moves away, what do we do for them? (throw a good-bye party; help them pack or clean their house; tell them how much they mean to us; give them pictures of us to remember us; give them addresses; etc.) When someone we love moves or goes away, do we expect them to come and clean our house or do our chores? (no because they have so many other things to think about. Share about someone you know who recently moved and how you helped them.) Hold up the cardboard picture collage and ask the children to look closely at the pictures. What are the people doing in these pictures? Are these things that you like to do? s there anything here that you have to do at your house? What would you think if, your teacher, came to your house tomorrow and did your chores for you? (Take responses.) Pause for a moment and look around at all the children. Present this situation with great amazement. magine that tomorrow you wake up and the doorbell rings. You go to the door and it is Jesus! You are so surprised! You invite him in and ask what you can do for him. You offer him something to eat or drink and a nice chair. magine that Jesus says, did not come here to have you take care of me. came here to serve you. Here, let me clean your room. would like to make your bed, pick up your toys and wash your clothes. And when am done, will wash the dishes and clean the bathroom. What would you think if Jesus did that? xplain that in today s ible Story, they are going to learn that Jesus did something really amazing for his disciples. He did something totally unexpected that surprised them and gave them a memory that they would never forget! The Master Servant Read the words from the index cards. Distribute the cards to the children and tell them to raise their cards each time they hear the word in the ible Story. The words have been capitalized below: t was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having OVD his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his OV. The evening meal was being served, and the devil had already prompted Judas scariot, son of Simon, to betray Jesus. Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, ord, are you going to wash my feet? Spring by Discipleship Publications nternational

4 S T O R Y Jesus replied, You do not realize now what am doing, but later you will UNDRSTAND. No, said Peter, you shall never wash my feet. Jesus answered, Unless wash you, you have no part with me. Then, ord, Simon Peter replied, not just my feet but my hands and my head as well! Jesus answered, A person who has had a bath needs only to wash his feet; his whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you. For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean. When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. Do you UNDRSTAND what have done for you? he asked them. You call me TACHR and ord, and rightly so, for that is what am. Now that, your ord and TACHR, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another s feet. have set you an XAMP that you should do as have done for you. tell you the truth, no SRVANT is greater than his MASTR, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them (John 13:1-17, emphasis added). Have the child again hold up the card with ove written on it. Jesus wanted to show his disciples how much he loved them. He wanted to do something so amazing that they would never forget it. So Jesus washed his disciples feet. Washing feet in Jesus day was a chore that most people did not want to do. t might be like washing the bathroom today. ven though Jesus was getting ready to go away, he served the disciples to show them his love. Have the child again hold up the card with Understand written on it. The disciples, and especially Peter, were very surprised. They did not understand why Jesus was washing their feet. They thought that Jesus was too important to do a chore like that for them! ut Jesus told them that they would understand later and they did! Have the children again hold up the remaining cards. Jesus wanted the disciples to understand that because he was their ord, it did not mean that he was too important to be a servant. He told them that they should also serve each other. That way, no one had an excuse to say, m too important to do that chore. NOT: Make sure to point out that Jesus also washed Judas feet, the man who would later betray him. Jesus could have been tempted to not want to serve Judas because he knew what Judas was planning to do. ut Jesus did not treat Judas any differently. Help the children see that Jesus loved and served everyone even his enemies. Sharing with Others Ask the children who they want to tell this ible Story to this week. ncourage them to remember Jesus example as they do their chores at home this week. Close with a prayer thanking God for sending Jesus to show us how to love each other. Teacher Tips f time permits during the week, arrange with the other teachers in your class to make some surprise visits to the homes of some of your children. Offer to serve them by helping with a chore or a project around the house (e.g., cleaning their room or closet; going through old toys, etc.) Talk with the parents in advance to make sure that the child will be at home and available for your visit. Place the objects on the tray and cover it with the towel. nstructions 1. ntroduce today s activity: n your ible Story this week, you learned how Jesus showed his love for his disciples. Jesus did something to his disciples that they did not expect he washed their dirty feet. Jesus showed the disciples that he was their teacher and their servant. He wanted them to see that he was not too important to serve them in a way most people did not want to serve. Jesus showed the disciples a very important lesson and gave them an example for how to love each other. n your game today, you will try to remember as much as you can from this week s ible Story and think of ways to serve like Jesus. 2. Have the children sit in a circle and show them the covered tray. Give them a piece of paper and pencil and have them write their names. Collect the papers and put them in the cup. 3. xplain that on the tray are a few items to remind them of this week s ible Story and help them think of ways to serve. Tell the child you called to name one item from the tray. Carefully remove that item and give it to the child. Ask the child to say one way that this item reminds them of how Jesus served and one way that it makes them think of how they can serve. Then have the children say how it makes them feel to know that they can be like Jesus. For example: if the child is holding the bandage, he may say that it reminds him of how Jesus healed people, and it makes him think that he could help someone who is sick by taking out their trash. f the child is holding the socks, he may say that they remind him of when Jesus washed the disciples feet, and they make him think that he should pick up his dirty socks and put them in the dirty clothes hamper. 6. f a child does not remember an item, remove one for him and let him continue. 7. Use the list on the back of this esson Card for additional ideas. Conclusion ncourage the children for their participation. Share about how happy it makes you feel to know that you can be like Jesus when you serve others. Close with a prayer thanking God that although Jesus was ord and Master, he was willing to serve his disciples. Teacher Tips Help the children to understand that although most people do not practice foot washing today, there are plenty of other ways to show how much we love each other. 13 supplement S K S How s Your Serve? The children will serve scriptures to one another. Materials For the teacher: score pad and pencil watch with second hand or timer scissors 2 paper plates Reproducible Pages: Page, 2 copies for the teacher Preparation 1. Cut out the scripture references from both your copies of Reproducible Page. 2. Fold and place each set of references on a paper plate. 3. Practice leading this activity. nstructions 1. ntroduce today s activity: n your ible Story this week, you learned about a time when Jesus served his disciples in an amazing and surprising way. Jesus washed his disciples feet! n Jesus day, foot washing was a job that most people did not want to do because it was a dirty job. Jesus knew that by washing his disciples feet, he would be showing them how much he loved them and cared for them. Jesus also knew that by washing their feet, he would be giving them an example of how they should love and serve each other. n your activity, you are going to practice looking up scriptures in the ible about service. 2. Divide the children into two teams. Have them sit across from each other. xplain that each team will serve a scripture reference to each other and then try to be the first team to find their reference in their ibles. 3. Choose a child from each team to begin. Give the children each a plate. When you say go start the timer and have the servers walk (not run) across to the other team and each serve the other children on that team a scripture from their plate. When all the children have been served a piece of paper, the serving child may return to his team. The children must work together to try and be the first team to locate all of their scripture references and mark them with their papers. When a team has located them all, they should sit and raise their hands. 4. Mark the time of the first team to finish. Wait until the other team is done and mark their time. 5. Using the list on the back of this esson Card, have the children point to each of the references they found in their ibles as you read them. Activity Variation nstead of serving all the references at once, have the children take turns serving one at a time to each team. Have all the children look for each reference together as a team. Do this until all the references have been located. Conclusion Ask the children how it makes them feel to serve other people and God. ncourage the children that God wants us to be happy because when we serve others we are serving God.
