1 Sunday, June 3, 2012 Grace Life Schl f Thelgy Grace Histry Prject Lessn 69 The State f Pauline Truth by 1900 E.W. Bullinger s The Church Epistles, 1898 In 1898, Bullinger wrte a series f articles n the Church Epistles. In 1902, these individual articles were cmpiled and published as a single vlume titled, The Church Epistles. (Carey, ) It is imprtant t nte that all f the infrmatin cntained in the 1902 bk was riginally published in Cnsequently, The Church Epistles shuld be viewed as pre-1900 testimny as t the state f Pauline truth. Since The Church Epistles is quite lengthy, we will nly cnsider thse sectins that are mst imprtant t ur verall purpse f assessing the state f Pauline truth befre In the intrductin, Bullinger cntends that there was an rder in which Pauline truth was lst and recvered. Mrever, the reasn that Christendm is s cnfused is because the church has nt apprehended Pauline truth as presented in the church epistles. It was Pauline truth and teaching frm which all had turned away. It was this turning away frm the truth as taught by the Hly Spirit thrugh Paul, especially as cntained in the epistles t the Ephesians, that led necessarily (1) T the lss f the teaching cncerning the Mystery; that truth cncerning the ne Bdy f Christ. The effect f this was at nce t put everything wrng ecclesiastically, and t make rm fr all the varius and different Bdies, s-called, with all the cnsequent divisins and schisms f the church. Instead f recgnizing the One Bdy which Gd had made, men set abut making their wn Bdies and Sects and with ecclesiastical cnfusin came the lss f the truth as t the Christina s perfect standing in Christ as having died and risen in Him. (2) Next, after this, went the truth f the Lrd s prmised return frm heaven; and f resurrectin, as the ne great and blessed hpe f the church... Having lst the truth f what Gd had made Christ t be unt us, and the jy as t ur standing thus given, in lking fr the blessed hpe, preparatin fr death and judgment was the necessary result, and therefre (3) The next thing t g was the truth as t what Gd had made us t be in Christ; and justificatin by faith and by grace was lst. The way was nw pen fr the full tide f errr t cme in: and it came in, like a fld, with all the crruptin and superstitin which ended in centuries which have the significant descriptin the dark ages... The refrmatin itself what was it, but the beginning f a recvery f these great truths? The remarkable fact is that the recvery f these truths has taken place in the inverse rder t that in which they were lst. Justificatin by grace thrugh faith was the first great truth recvered at the Refrmatin. This was the truth ver which that great battle was fught and wn, thugh the victry was far frm cmplete. Fr nt until the nineteenth century had well begun did the Pastr Bryan Rss

2 Lrd s return frm heaven begin t becme again the blessed hpe f His church. In later years the subject has becme mre and mre precius t increasing numbers... The truth f the Mystery, as it was the first t g, s, it seems, is the last t be recvered. It is with the hpe f ding smething t recver this truth that these papers have been written n the Church Epistles. May the Lrd use them t bring back vital truths t their prper place, that their pwer may be felt in the hearts and seen in the lives f an increasing number f the members f the Bdy f Christ. The cause f all the cnfusin arund is that thusands f thse wh prfess t be Christians knw little r nthing f these Church Epistles. There is n ther prfessin which they culd enter withut being able t pass a satisfactry examinatin in the textbks set frth fr that purpse. There is n psitin in life that anyne culd apply fr withut being asked hw much ne knew f its duties and respnsibilities. But the Christian prfessin is treated in quite a different manner, and as quite a different matter. Anyne may undertake that, all the while being ttally ignrant f these Church Epistles:-- The Creed, the Lrd s Prayer and the Ten Cmmandments, are cnsidered sufficient fr the Christian psitin and prfessin. Hence the almst ttal neglect f these Epistles. The fur Gspels and the Sermn n the Munt are taken as the essence f Christianity, instead f the Epistles specially addressed t Churches. Hence the great ignrance f Christians as t all that Gd has made Christ t be unt His peple, and all that He has made them t be in Him. Nt knwing their standing in Christ, and their cmpleteness and perfectin in Him, they are easily led int errr cncerning their state and their walk. Many, wh knw they are justified by grace, yet seek t be sanctified by wrks. Nthing but full knwledge f what is revealed fr ur instructin in these Church Epistles will effectually deliver us frm all the new dctrines and schls f thught which find an entrance int ur midst. (1-4) In the first chapter titled, The Seven Church Epistles: The Imprtance f Their Order, Bullinger cntends that the teachings f Christ in the Gspels have been exalted ver the teachings f Christ thrugh the pen f Paul as recrded in the Church epistles. Herein lies the reasn that Christendm is in such cnfusin, they have failed t recgnize Pauline authrity. It is a serius blw t Inspiratin when the imprtance f ne part f Scripture is exalted abve anther. T d this is t reduce the Bible t the psitin f any ther bk, and practically t deny that the whle is made up f the wrds which the Hly Ghst teacheth. This is dne in the present day when, accrding t the new Ritschlian Schl, The Teaching f Jesus is exalted abve the Teachings f the Hly Spirit by Paul, as thugh there were a rivalry between the tw. The wrds f Christ, and the wrds f Paul are equal in weight and imprtance, inasmuch as bth are recrded and given t us by the same Hly Spirit; and are therefre equal in authrity. That authrity is Divine; and n difference can be made between them withut jepardizing the very essence f Inspiratin. Pastr Bryan Rss

3 That there is a difference is clear. But this difference arises frm failing t rightly divide the wrd f Truth as t the varius Dispensatins f which it treats. What He said n earth is necessarily f the highest imprtance t us dispensatinally as shwing hw, thrugh His rejectin by His peple Israel, the salvatin f Gd has been sent t the Gentiles (Acts 28:28). But that teaching was given t special persns under special circumstances, and it must be interpreted and applied accrdingly. It was nt designed as a cmpendium f instructin fr the Church f Gd, fr the Church was nt then being frmed, and, as a matter f fact, the churches t whm the epistles were addressed did nt at that time pssess the fur Gspels as we have them... Seven churches were addressed as such by the Hly Spirit. Seven being the number f spiritual perfectin... The seven epistles f the Hly Spirit by Paul had already been written and read, and neglected and practically frsaken, when Christ sent His wn seven t thse seven churches in Rev. 2 and 3... Sme wuld tell us t g back t the first three centuries t find primitive Christianity in its purity. But these Scriptures shw that we cannt even g back t the first century. The nly successrs the Apstles knew f were linked t grievus wlves (Acts 20:29). The seven churches t which the Hly Spirit addressed His epistles by Paul are Rmans, Crinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Clssians, and Thessalnians. (5-7) In 1898, Bullinger is very clear that the truth f the mystery was revealed t Paul during the Acts perid. This can be clearly discerned by cnsidering His cmments n Rmans 16:25-26, an Acts Perid epistle. The imprtance f thus rightly dividing is seen in the final member (16:25-27) f the Epistle, as in every ther. Here we have the mystery in cntrast t Gd s Gspel (in 1:1-6). There are thse wh willfully clse their eyes and perversely refuse t see the difference between these tw. But the Wrd is clear fr all wh have the eyes f their understanding pened. Eph. 1:18 declares the necessity f this fr the understanding f the Mystery which is the great subject f Ephesians, as we shall see... It surely must be clear t the simplest hnest mind that Gd s Gspel, which is expressly stated t have been prmised afre by His prphets in the Hly Scriptures, cannt pssibly be the same as the Mystery which was kept secret since the wrld began, but is nw made manifest by prphetic writings. If they be the same, then language is useless fr the purpse f revelatin. If this be dctrine and instructin what is the special instructin cnveyed by stating that prmised afre means kept secret frm times eternal (R.V.) until nw? What answer culd be given t the Infidel, wh believing what is taught by sme Christians, as t this mistaken identity, expses such a discrepancy as is thus created? N: we abide by the teaching here given, that the Mystery was a revelatin made t Paul (II Cr. 12:1, 7; Gal. 1:12, etc.), after this Divine calling t be an Apstle... S, in like manner, there is gd news cncerning the bdy f Christ, f which His peple nw are the members n earth, and He is the great and glrius Head in heaven. This is gd news, and it is part f the Gspel. Being specially cmmitted t Paul, he smetimes speaks f it as my Gspel, as distinguished frm that cmmitted t the Pastr Bryan Rss

4 twelve. He speaks f it as my Gspel here (16:25). And, whether this refers t the Mystery...And the preaching, etc. the cnclusin is the same: that the Mystery, always hithert hidden, cannt be the same as that which was prmised afre. What the Mystery (r Secret) is, it is nt the purpse f the Epistle t the Rmans t teach. The subjective, dctrinal fundatin fr it is laid; and it is merely mentined at the clse in rder t cmplete the beautiful structure f the Epistle, and t prepare the way fr it t be taken up in the Ephesians; where it is fully dealt with as the next great lessn t be taught in Rans must first be experientially received and learned, befre we can pass t the mre advanced lessn f Ephesians. Having learned what it is t have died with Christ, and t have been raised with Christ; we are, in Ephesians, further taught what it is t be nw already seated in the Heavenlies in Christ. (75-77) In his cmments n The First Epistle t the Crinthians, Bullinger is explicitly clear that the revelatin f the mystery is the truth abut the ne bdy f Christ. Paul culd nt teach the Crinthians this because they were nt spiritually ready t hear but were divided int man-made grups. The main pint is this, Paul knew the mystery when he wrte the Crinthians during the Acts Perid but culd nt teach it t the Crinthians because f their immature spiritual state. We have seen hw, in Rm. 16:25-26, the Mystery is referred t and stated as a fact. The time was cme fr it t be made knwn, that the saints might be established as the Church f Gd, apart frm the earthly hpe f Israel as a natin, nw, that as a natin Israel was cast-ff. The saints were t knw a higher and a heavenly calling. But in I Cr. 2 the reasns are given why, when the apstle was at Crinth, he culd nr preach the Mystery t the saints there... Instead f recgnizing that they were ne bdy in Christ and members ne f anther (Rm. 12:5), they were frming separate Bdies n their wn, and classing themselves under different teachers, and everyne said, I am f Paul; and I f Aplls; and I f Cephas (I Cr. 1:12). Instead f reckning themselves as having died with Christ t sin, since he had died fr their sins, they were living in sin... This is why he culd nt preach the Mystery t them... wing t their divisin, and their being taken up with their wn Bdies, they were nt in a fit cnditin, spiritually, t receive the revelatin f the Mystery, which is the ne bdy f Christ, f which He is the glrius Head in heaven, and His peple the members f it n earth. This is a spiritual Bdy. This is a spiritual unin and a spiritual truth. It can be declared nly t spiritual persns... The Mystery invlves the full truth f this new and heavenly standing. It invlves truth far beynd substitutin in death; it invlves unin with Christ in all the value f his death, burial, and resurrectin. It embraces the truths cnnected with His ascensin and cming again. It invlves nt nly ur present stand in Christ, but the hpe f ur unin with Christ in glry, when He shall cme t be glrified in His saints. (81-84) Bullinger clearly states that Paul knew the mystery when he was in Crinth planting the church in that city. Smething f the Mystery which he culd nt annunce t them when he first visited them, and planted the church f Christ amng them. (85) It is clear frm Bullinger s wn pen, that early in his ministry he did nt distinguish between the Acts and pst-acts epistles f Paul, nr did he start the church in Acts 28. Bullinger s discussin f The Epistle t the Galatians, anther Acts Perid epistle, includes a sectin n baptism. The significance f this sectin shuld nt be underestimated. The fact that it was riginally penned in 1898 makes it quite pssibly the earliest knwn (t this authr at this time) explanatin f a n water psitin n baptism. Pastr Bryan Rss

5 As t baptism, there is the same remarkable reference t as many as were baptized, and while in Rmans we are taught the dgmatic truth as t ur death with Christ, expressed in the likeness f His death, the ld man being put ff having been crucified with Christ; here (in Gal. 3:27) the baptism with the Spirit is referred t whereby Christ, the New Man is put n, i.e., that thse, wh are risen with Christ in the likeness f His resurrectin, wherein they are t exist (Rm. 6:5) stand cvered with Him and His righteusness as with a garment. N lnger reckned as being in the first Adam, but standing befre Gd n new grund, resurrectin grund, in Christ, having thus put n Christ nt by baptism in water, but by burial and resurrectin with Christ. When the exhrtatin is given t put n Christ it can mean nly that we are t reckn urselves as having died and risen in Christ. Hw else can it be? Truth, t be practical, must be practicable. In what way can we mrtify the flesh? Nt by cntrlling it. Cntrlling is nt killing, and the wrd rendered mrtify means t put t death. By what act, then, can we put the flesh t death, expect by reckning urselves as having died, accrding t Rm. 6:11, and by knwing that ur ld man was crucified with Him (Rm. 6:6)? This is the knwledge which is given in Rmans and the practical utcme f it is seen in Gal. 2:20. Summary f The Church Epistles 1898 An analysis f The Church Epistles reveals the fllwing aspects f mid-acts Pauline dispensatinalism. Once again, this evaluatin is critical because it des nt turn up any hint f the Acts 28 psitin that dminated Bullinger s later writings. All the epistles f Paul addressed t the churches (Rmans, Crinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Clssians, and Thessalnians) are fr the church f this dispensatin. Paul s wrds cntained in the epistles are equal t thse f Christ recrded in the fur gspels. The failure t acknwledge and apply this truth has led t the teachings f Jesus being exalted ver the teachings f the Hly Spirit thrugh the pen f the Apstle Paul. Rmans 16:25 lays the dctrinal fundatin fr Ephesians where the truth f the mystery is fully develped. Therefre, Paul knew the mystery when he wrte Rmans in Acts 20. Furthermre, Paul knew the mystery when he went t Crinth (I Cr. 2:7-8) but did nt widely preach it because f the spiritual state f the Crinthians (I Cr. 2:1, 3:1). In his cmments n Galatians 3:27, Bullinger is explicitly clear that the baptism with the Spirit is referred t whereby Christ, the New Man is put n... nt by baptism in water, but by burial and resurrectin with Christ. Bullinger is clearly teaching a n water psitin with regard t the issue f Baptism and identificatin with Christ. State f Pauline Truth by 1900 After surveying the wrks f Darby, Trtter, Hlden, Mackintsh, and Bullinger written befre 1900 we have clearly demnstrated that the fllwing aspects f Pauline truth where knwn and in print befre the turn f the century. In n particular rder: Pastr Bryan Rss

6 Clear distinctin between prphecy and mystery. Church was a unique Pauline revelatin unknwn prir t the time f Paul. Despite an fficial Acts 2 stance n the part f Darby and Trtter, the pening chapters f Acts are viewed as being Jewish in the character and cntent. Acts 7 is viewed by these men as the final tale f Judaism. Meanwhile, Hlden, Mackintsh, and Bullinger are all clear that Acts 2 was nt the beginning f the bdy f Christ. The Church was in the mind Gd befre the wrld began. It was thus first in the plan and prgram f Gd but last in rder f revelatin. The mystery pertains t the frmatin f the bdy f Christ. The truth that Jews and Gentiles wuld be recnciled t Gd in ne bdy by the crss was never revealed prir t the ministry and writings f the Apstle Paul. The Church s blessings are spiritual in nature and heavenly in psitin, whereas, Israel s blessings were physical in nature and earthly in psitin. The phrases time past and but nw were in usage t explain dispensatinal distinctives. Principalities and pwers in heavenly places are taught the manifld wisdm f Gd by the church the bdy f Christ. The dispensatin f the fullness f times is a future dispensatin in which all things in heaven and n earth will be centered in the persn f Jesus Christ. The surce f all the cnfusin in Israel stems frm the failure t rightly divide the wrd f truth as well as frm the general ignrance f the mystery. Paul is the divinely appinted instructr fr the dispensatin f grace just as Mses was during the dispensatin f the law. The church in the wilderness (Acts 7:35) is different frm the church the bdy f Christ. The mystery includes the fllwing three pints (Eph. 3:6) That the Gentiles shuld be fellw-heirs. That they shuld be ne bdy That they shuld be partakers r c-partners f Gd s prmise in the Messiah The establishment f the kingdm is the subject f prphecy. Therefre, the Old Testament, Fur Gspels, as well as early Acts cntain a cnsistent testimny t Israel. The Fur Gspels and Acts recrd the histry f Israel s rejectin f her king and kingdm. Jhn the Baptist, Jesus Christ, and the 12 Apstles present a cnsistent ministry t Israel during the Gspels and early Acts thrugh the preaching f the Gspel f the Kingdm. Cnsequently the parables, i.e., the mysteries f the kingdm in Matthew have nthing t d with the church the bdy f Christ. Pastr Bryan Rss

7 Satan s actins in bringing abut the death f Christ wrught ut Gd s secret purpse cncerning the church the bdy f Christ. The bdy f Christ will dispssess Satan and his angels frm the current psitins in the heavenlies and inherit their vacated psitins f rank and authrity. Thrugh the revelatin f the mystery, Satan s entire plan f evil is thwarted. Christendm has degenerated int a frm f bastard Jewish because they have failed t rightly divide the wrd f truth. Israel s prgram has been mixed with the Bdy s prgram which has caused the church t fall shrt f true understanding. The difference between the believer s standing and state was understd. Pentecst is nt the beginning f the bdy f Christ. The Church is nt the bride f Christ but part f the Bridegrm. All the Pauline Epistles, even thse written during the Acts perid, are fr this dispensatin. There was a difference between the gspel f the kingdm and the gspel f the grace f Gd cmmitted t Paul. Failure t understand Paul s gspel articulated in the first 8 chapters f Rmans were the surce f the church s cnfusin. The Blessed Hpe f the Church was the rapture when the Lrd returned t meet the saints in the air. This event was clearly understd t be different and distinct frm the Lrd s bdily secnd cming recrded in Revelatin 19. The bdy f Christ is frmed by the baptism f the Hly Spirit int Christ. This is nt accmplished thrugh the baptism with water. Thse standing fr Pauline authrity can always expect t be in the minrity when cmpared with the prfessing church. There can be little dubt that the real histry f the resurgence in Pauline truth is much mre edifying, enlightening, and fascinating than the instructinal histries that have fr t lng dminated these histrical discussins within the s-called Grace Mvement. By the end f the 19 th and beginning f the 20 th century there were already strng vices cntending fr the wrd f Gd rightly divided and the revelatin f the mystery cmmitted t the Apstle Paul.
