Rep Gallager of llnos gave hs hearers every assurance that he and hs colleagues would leave no stone unturned to gve Kaua the deep sea harbor that t needed and must have; Rep Tread way added hs solemn assurance to that of hs predecessor ths very thng would assuredly bedone;rep Bowers added hs assurance that he would get for Hawa a natonal aquarum tlat would draw vast hordes of toursts to our shores etc etc; At 11:15 a m comes recall and the companes art marched back to ther streets At hgh noon dnner s gven, stew, potatoes, rce, bread pot-roaand coffee, st sometmes and how good at all tastes The ollcers have a sesson from 11:15 to 12 layng out plans for the afternoon, so there s not much for a clean up At one ocloek the grm com mences agan, lastng to 4 p n When recall sounds at 4:45, re treat: frst call s gven at 4:50 Assembly and at 5 retreat, each company lned up n ts street comng to present arms when the flag s lowered, then super for all and cleanng up Ollcers school s held each nght at 7:30 when a tmely lecture l gven and by ) most are asleep Yesterday, Saturday ; we had our frst battalon hke, Maor Kopke, mounted, takng us out, four companes strong: advance and rear guards were formed and we hked a few mles n the brolng sun Monday commences the greater move- - The Bartlett Exhbton The exhbton of Mr Charles V Bartletts wood engravngs n color, whch have been on vew at the home of Mr and Mrs Lydgate durng the past few days, has brought a touch of color and a bt of varety nto these Ftrenuous days when our thoughts are centered on war and ts dread actvty t was a complete change for those who were fortunate enough to be there, to le taken on a trp through nda, Kashmr, Ceylon and Japan The walls lterally shone wth gems of rch color found n the Khv-be- r Pass, and Srnagar, Benares and Agra where s the most perfect example of Mohammedan archtecture n the world, that etheral mausoleum bult by Akbar Khan called the Most of the ndan Ta-Mah- pctures portrayed a world utterly strange to us, unlke anythng that may be seen here; some of the scenes from Madura and Ceylon however, suggested our own nland? n a way The Japanese subects are most nterestng, and have a character all ther own These wood cuts are carred much farther than the lro-shgold Japanese color prnts of e and Hokusa, the color prnt masters of Japanese art lher tone, varety of color, and brllance all suggest a Western pont of vew The medum of producton by means of engravng on wood s only sutable for desgns more or less decoratve, and t s n ths happy combnaton of dealsm and realsm that Mr Bartlett shows hs orgnalty and character The method of makng these wood cuts, whch has been n use for three hundred years or so, and s stll n vogue, may be descrbed brefly as follows: The desgn, or pcture s drawn by the artst on t thn paper and pasted onto a cherry-woo- d block, face downward Ths block s then carved out so that the drawng only remans; many prnts are then made from ths block They are called key blocks The artst colors the key blocks, one for each separate color, and these n turn are pasted onto the cherrywood blocks leavng only the spaces to be colored Ordnarly about twelve or sx teen blocks were used for Mr Bart- - ttts prnts, though of course the number vares wth the subect and the result desred Then cones the prntng Frst the key block s prnted by placng the paper face downward on the block and rubbng t wth the "barren," a dsc covtred wth bam boo skn or sheath Afterward each wood block s used n the same way great care beng xakcn na the "regster" s always accurate Dark rch tones, as n the sky of the Ta Mahal by Moonlght" or the water of Udapur" are pro duced by colorng the block many tmes wth the necessary blue, and prntng separately each tme as many as ffty-fv- e prntngs were necessary n the above Udapur" Mr Bartlett s now at work on some wood cuts n whch he s producng entrely by hmself No doubt they wll lack the extraordnary mechancal skll of the Japanese carver and prnter, men who have worked all ther lves at such monotonous labor, but on the other hand they wll gan enormously as works of art, for they wll bear the mpresson of hs own ndvdualty throughout the entre work The edton of each subect con ssts of 150 sgned proofs, and when the edton s exhausted the blocks are destroyed There were also on vew a few orgnal water colors, n some cases unfnshed, done m llanale, a fsherman throwng hs net, sunset at Hanale, wth a number of peo ple fshng from the wharf etc also a vew of the lumwr yard at a- - mea, where the men are handlng lumber under the algeroba trees ments and we expect to have some longer hkes As a whole 1 thnk the camp s a success, the men learnng fast as should be Santaton, uppermost, s well taken care of, and but very few men have been sck Yesterday some lades and chl dren appeared n camp, and t seemed good to see them agan, man havng nearly forgotten how they look and how ther voces sound Another week or so we wll be homeward lound, havng learned a lot, physcally and mentally more ft, sunburned and lean as should be and Camp Kawaloa wll be a "Saga blot" Of Kaua people, brother F E McCall showed up smlng glad to Kaua see boys agan Mss Juanta Speekens, formerly of Kapaa school also has been seen, greetng old frends Wth aloha nu loa, Yours truly J L WED NOVEMBER 28, AT -- ) J nr - L?
