10 CHAPTER ntroducton books and artcles about joseph smth the founder organzer and prophet of the church of jesus chrst of latter L day sants are numerous and vared n ther esteem and n ther treatment of hm hs name has become known m for good and evl throughout the world as he was told that t would j be the church he organzed more than a century ago wth sx members sgnng the artcles of ncorporaton now numbers more than a mllon souls and ths membershp stll bears 1 testmony of the dvne msson of ths man as a prophet and a restorer of truth to the people of the world n ths dspensaton j joseph smth suffered much persecuton Derse by nauguratng many new and revolutonary prncples and doctrnes durng the years from 1820 untl hs martyrdom n 1844 but the organzaton he founded has gradually grown n numbers power po wery and nfluence untl today t s recognzed as one of the most vtal relgons n the world shortly after the tme of hs martyrdom hs wdow vdow wdowly emma hale smth began to oppose vgorously the men who utho had been closest to her husband n the councls of the church and to strke out aganst them when organzed mobs drove the mormon people out of llnos after they had shot and klled joseph smth hs wfe remaned to take up her abode n the deserted cty rather than move on wth ths persecuted people
