2 A Note From Our Pastor Dear Friends, As you know I have been assigned to be the District Superintendent of the East District (Lufkin area) of the Texas Annual Conference. This will be a new experience for JoAn and I, and we covet your thoughts and prayers in this new service for Christ s Kingdom. However, it is not time to say good bye. There is still work to do! We look forward to serving with you throughout the Lent and Easter seasons. You bless us with your love, and we are honored to be part of your church family. May God s peace be with all of us in this time of transition. 6 2016 FUMC Contacts Mike & Sandy Narkiewicz 201 PR 5184 Quitman, TX CELEBRATING 8 YEARS OF SERVICE You are invited to a celebration of serving the Senior Citizens of Wood County by Forever Young Activity Center OPEN HOUSE Date: Thursday, March 9, 2017 Time: 5:30 to 7 pm Where: 404 S. Main in Quitman, TX OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD Do you remember July 2015 at FUMC? We had at our church Pastor Sika Yawa from TOGO to share with us about Operation Christmas Child. What it meant to the children receiving a shoebox, Jesus Christ and The Greatest Journey. Recently I met Mark Harrison, from Houston. He is a year round volunteer like myself. He is going to TOGO, the end of March with 2 other people I met. They will help distribute shoeboxes to the children. How exciting for us to be partners with this wonderful ministry of sharing Jesus Christ and his love to the children. FUMC has partnered with OCC as a Relay Center, now known as a Drop Off Location since The Drop Off Location Team Leader resigned at the end of the year. We are praying for someone that loves the mission of Operation Christmas Child and would be interested in being a year round volunteer to partner with OCC and become the FUMC Drop Off Location Team Leader. Please contact Gloria Jeane Rosewall, gloriajeanerosewall@gmail.com or We will pray about it together. The Trustees circulated a basic floor plan to those in attendance. The expansion plan will bring the seating capacity to 124, up 32 from the current capacity of 94. Hibbs explained that recent attendance figures were averaging 70-plus, just below the 80 percent capacity figure regarded by most experts as a detriment to membership growth. He also explained that preliminary cost estimates for the expansion is below the surplus balance in the current (2017) general operating fund. So, no borrowing or debt is anticipated for the expansion. The expansion plan calls for 28-feet to be added to the rear of the current building, increasing the square footage from 1,200-to-2,040. It is anticipated that a stained-glass window will be added to the back wall. Three new rows of pews will be added. And, the expansion will allow for an eight-foot open interior space at the front entrance. Existing furniture will be used. The plan calls for retaining the current exterior look of the building with painted brick exterior walls and a metal roof. The Trustees have also provided for Liberty members to make specific donations in support of the expansion plan such as additional pews, 8-to-10 ceiling lights, stained glass window (spoken for), sound system, 12 choir chairs, three new windows. The Council and the Trustees have formed a 5-member interior design and finishings committee comprised of: Hibbs, Elizabeth Deuson, Neva Potts, Anna Wilkins and Stewart Boswank. Congregational & District approval for the expansion and remodeling undertaking will be sought this year as required by The Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church, 2016 edition. There will also be at least two general meetings with the congregation with updates and to seek input. Several Liberty members have joined the United Methodist Men of the Quitman FUMC and are participating in the community service projects adopted by the organization. In addition, Liberty members Don Hensley and Jerry Price have accepted leadership positions in the UMM Hensley as 2017 President and Price as 2017 Chaplin. 7
8 January 4 March 22, 2017 Do your dreams seem out of reach? If you have a dream then you have a destiny. In this 10-part series, From Dream to Destiny, Robert Morris prompts you to ask yourself, "How do I travel from the dream to the destiny - and what should I expect along the way?" (no class March 1 due to Ash Wednesday) (no class March 15 due to Spring Break) March 29 April 19, 2017 Hope. We know that hope is central to our identity as Christians and we know that supreme hope is found in a relationship with Jesus Christ, but how does that relationship become real to us? In Citizens of Hope, a book and four-week small-group study, you ll be guided on a formative path of understanding who God is and who you are as God s children. Each session is designed to invoke holy conversation and provides a suggested course of action in faith for every member of your group sending them out to serve in Jesus name.
