Website: president@rotaryclubofjinja.org / secretary@rotaryclubofjinja.org JULY: Start of New Rotary Officers Year of Service Dear Rotarians, Editor s Message Congratulations upon completing the Rotary year 2014/2015! Congratulations upon starting the Rotary year 2015/2016 in which the RI President K. R. Ravindran has asked us to Be a Gift to the World. Several weeks into the month I presume we are already on the track to fulfilling this theme. Let us be inspired to work with more zeal, diligence, and enthusiasm this rotary year. Honestly, the sky should be the limit. Last year we lit up Rotary, it is now time for us to be a gift to the world. Let us go forward and do just that. July has no designate and it marks the start of New Rotary Officers year of service. Thank you, dear reader for embracing this month s bulletin and let the reading be worth your precious time. 2 Page 2 PRESIDENT S INAUGURAL SPEECH President Rosemary Namate, PHF Our Chief Guest tonight Ms Rtn. Rosetti Nabbumba Nayenga; dear brothers and sisters belonging to the Rotary family, invited guests, ladies and gentlemen. My dear friends who are gathered here this evening to witness the passing on of the baton of the power of service to a new President; I most sincerely thank you for your presence as we celebrate our past and create the future. I particularly wish to thank our Asst. District Secretary 2014/15 and the Incoming District Planning, Implementation, Monitoring & Evaluation Chairperson 2015/16, Rtn. Rosetti Nabbumba Nayenga for accepting to be our Chief Guest tonight. I feel honored and humbled by the great challenge bestowed upon me by the members of the Rotary Club of Jinja in electing me to be their President of the year Fellow members, every year our focus is very clearly guided by our core values: Participation, Service, Fellowship, Diversity, Integrity and Leadership; for these are the values we live by and strive to bring into the communities we serve. They are values that define us as Rotarians world over. Therefore, guided by these core values together with our theme BE A GIFT TO THE WORLD, and in Rotary Friendship, I humbly accept to serve you as the President of the Rotary Club of Jinja in the year The Rotary International President K. R. "Ravi" Ravindran selected the theme as Be a Gift to the World. He says that every one of us has something to give no matter who, Being gifted does not mean that you have been given something. It means, you have something to give. where or what we are in life. We can give our talent, our knowledge, our abilities and our effort; we can give our dedication and our devotion. Through Rotary, we can deliver these gifts and make a genuine improvement in the quality of lives of others and in our world. I believe that together we will make it. Besides our own members, other friends who are here tonight with us are all givers by way of time, expertise, experience and financial support. For example Kakira Sugar Ltd, Nile Breweries, BIDCO, Red Cross Society, TASO, Green Summer, AgroWays, Amos & Maureen Stationers, Viral Services, to mention but a few. To our guests and friends here tonight, Rotary has six areas of focus, namely, Peace and conflict prevention/resolution; Disease prevention and treatment; Water and sanitation; Maternal and child health; Basic education and literacy; and Economic and community development. A month ago, when I informed one of my close friends that the invitation list for our club installation will be over 200, she asked me, Is that a marriage function? Then I replied her saying Yes dear, it is a marriage. It s a marriage of the Rotary with the needs of the community. A marriage of our club s initiative with partnerships with various stakeholders and they will be an integral part of support to the Rotary Club of Jinja. Being gifted does not mean that you have been given something. It means, you have something to give. So all you friends present hee have been part of our journey during the course of all the 50 years of our existence. I specifically wanted you to be here, where it matters most. I take oath of service to humanity fully knowing that you will all back me up. I feel it is time for us and all like-minded organizations and individuals to collaborate and not compete in the field of SER- VICE ABOVE SELF. This is so that together we achieve the goal of selfless service and assistance to the underprivileged in the society as a pay-back to the community which has made us what we are today. I am sure you will all whole-heartedly support this great cause to make Uganda a better place and in turn lead to a better world. I promise the members of this club and this august gathering that I will put in all my knowledge and efforts to ensure that the good work of this club that was begun by our predecessors and Rotary International is continued. However, I will not do all this alone, but with the advice of our Past Presidents Council and my board that I wish to introduce to you now:

Amen. HUMOUR!!! A teacher from Primary School asks her students to write an essay about what they would like God to do for them. At the end of the day, while marking the essays, she read one that made her very emotional. Her husband, who had just walked in, saw her crying and asked her 'What happened?' She answered "Read this. It is one of my students' essay." "Oh God, tonight I ask you something very special. Make me into a television. I want to take its place and live like the TV in my house. Have my own special place, And have my family around ME. To be taken seriously when I talk. I want to be the centre of attention and be heard without interruptions or questions. I want to receive the same special care that the TV receives even when it is not working. Have the company of my dad when he arrives home from work, even when he is tired. And I want my mom to want me when she is sad and upset, instead of ignoring me. And I want my brothers to fight to be with me. I want to feel that family just leaves everything aside, every now and then, just to spend some time with me. And last but not least, ensure that I can make them all happy and entertain them. Lord I don't ask you for much. I just want to live like a TV." At that moment the husband said 'My God, poor kid. What horrible parents!' The wife looked up at him and said, "That essay is our son's".

7 Page 7 Volume 1, Issue 1 District Governor s Message - July 2015 W hile serving as Country Chair in 2012/13, I vividly remember being approached by an Assistant Governor (AG) who needed my advice on how to deal with a Club President whose strategy was NOT to QUALIFY for the Rotary Foundation Future Vision Plan as it was then known. I promised the AG that I would intervene and indeed I did talk to the President about the advantages of a Club qualifying to receive Global Grants. He however, stuck to his strategy declaring with pride that not qualifying to receive Global Grants was their strategy for the year. Unfortunately, that Rotary Club was terminated by Rotary International in the subsequent year and we never got the chance of developing a more progressive strategy for this club. T he core message that runs throughout the Object of Rotary is the ideal of service as an opportunity to serve society It was therefore shocking that a Club President, perhaps supported by the Club members, could resolve not to respect the core objectives of the organization they serve. Was the President in this case worthy of his leadership? Were the members worthy of their membership in Rotary? A s Rotarians, membership to our clubs and to Rotary, gives us many opportunities and privileges. We can contest for leadership positions in the club; we can vote for the leaders we want; we can propose new members; and so forth. But we are also obliged to do so responsibly and in a manner that sustains the values of Rotary. C lub Presidents and Directors wield a lot of influence. They have been given decision-making power, access to resources and to different offices in the Rotary hierarchy to support the better functioning of their clubs. They are responsible for sourcing partners, liaising with communities, identifying projects and for the stewardship of club resources including grants. They are therefore essentially responsible for leading our service efforts and must therefore be held accountable. Y et if members just continue to show up for fellowship and allow the leaders to simply sit back and do as they please, neither the membership nor the leadership and indeed the Club will have counted!! Neither one of them will have been the gift to the world that RI President Ravi demands of all Rotarians in 2015/ 16. Every one of us has something to give whoever we are, whatever our place in life. We can give our talent, our knowledge, our abilities, and our effort; we can give our dedication and our devotion. Through Rotary, we can take these gifts and make a genuine difference in the lives of others and in our world. RI President , K.R Ravindran. E very new Rotary year gives us a new opportunity to serve humanity. As we welcome our new leaders for the Rotary year 2015/ 16, I wish to implore all my fellow Rotarians to make your membership in Rotary count. For the Club Presidents and all Rotary leaders at various levels, this is our time, we have one year, let s make these leadership positions count by adding value to the service of humanity. It s only when we do - that we shall be true to this year s Rotary theme Be a Gift to The World.
