1 I. Curse Descriptin PT 401 Pastral Cunseling Spring 2013 Syllabus Gary Spaeth This will be an in-depth lk at the cunseling respnsibilities f the pastr. It will include a study f the techniques t be used t prvide biblical cunsel t thse wh are hurting and in need f guidance. It will als discuss the precautins that need t be taken by a pastr and staff when cunseling. II. Curse Objectives This curse will endeavr t: 1. Discuss the rle f the pastr as a shepherd, and his care fr the flck during times f need. 2. Discuss the varius methds fr cunseling and demnstrate the necessity fr biblically based cunseling. 3. Prvide a detailed explanatin f the biblical fundatin fr cunseling. 4. Identify the need fr a church cunseling plicy, and the areas that shuld be addressed by it. 5. Illustrate prper guidelines fr cnducting varius types f cunseling sessins. 6. Explain the Biblical cunseling prcess, and list the varius areas f questins that shuld be asked in rder t detect the prblem and develp a strategy fr the cunselee t vercme the prblem. 7. Give the student experience in cunseling thrugh cnducting simulated cunseling sessins. 8. Examine the need fr pre-marital cunseling, and discuss the cntent that shuld be addressed t the engaged cuple. 9. Recgnize the imprtance f the pastr s help in the grieving prcess, and identify the prcedures fr cnducting a funeral.

Please include several qutes frm the bk that culd be useful during yur cunseling sessins. A Maze f Grace, Dr. Paul Chappell - Due February 12 th Living in an Imperfect Wrld, R.B. Ouellette - Due February 28 th Emtinal Victry, Bud Calvert - Due April 2 nd A Firm Fundatin, Dr. Paul Chappell - Due April 18 th 2. Prjects: a. Verses fr Cunseling Tpics Select five (5) Cunseling issues (ex. depressin, frgiveness, bitterness), and lcate ten (10) Bible verses dealing with the Christian s respnse t these prblems. Include bth the reference and Scripture with a ne paragraph summary f the Biblical teaching n each issue. Fr each tpic, als include tw resurces, bks r articles that prvide practical guidance n hw t deal with this issue. Due February 19 th b. Church Cunseling Plicy Fr this prject the student will create a well thught-ut plicy t gvern cunseling cnducted at a lcal church. The plicy MUST be at least fur (4) pages lng and include everything necessary t safeguard the cunselee, cunselr, and the church. The plicy will cntain three sectins: general cunseling, pre-marital cunseling, and cunseling children. The plicy shuld address the fllwing issues: Wh yu will and will nt cunsel Hw will children be cunseled What are yur guidelines fr cnducting wedding ceremnies What cunseling will yu require fr thse yu will marry Where can the cunseling be cnducted Wh will cnduct cunseling in yur church Hw lng will yu cunsel a persn Due March 28 th

3 PT 401 Pastral Cunseling Spring 2013 Page 3 3. Tests: c. Mck Cunseling Sessins Cnduct tw (2) twenty (20) minute cunseling sessins, utilizing the cunseling methd learned in class. These sessins shuld be cnducted with tw different peple. The purpse f this prject is t familiarize yu with the cunseling prcess. After the tw sessins, write a ne (1) page summary fr each sessin. The summary shuld include the names f the persns yu met with, the lcatin, the date and time, and an evaluatin f yur perfrmance in the sessin. Due April 11 th d. Funeral Service Plan the details f a funeral service including the fllwing: Descriptin f the deceased persn (saved? yung? Church member?) A list f questins yu wuld ask the family t prepare fr funeral service Order f services (bth funeral and graveside) Funeral sermn utline This prject will be due April 25 th a. Midterm examinatin March 12 th b. Final examinatin May 7 th Guidelines fr submitting assignments All assignments must fllw these guidelines r they will be returned ungraded. First page must be a Cver Page (A sample is included with this syllabus) Margins set t ne (1) inch Page numbers n the bttm right f every page except fr the cver page Times New Rmans r equivalent twelve (12) pint fnt Direct and indirect qutes can nly make up 20% f the cntent f yur paper; t exceed this wuld be reflected by pint reductins n the paper s cntent. All papers and prjects must be the student s wn wrk. N student is permitted t wrk with anther persn n any paper r prject unless the instructr has given his permissin.

Grammar and spelling (sent. struc., sp., frmal writing frmat)... 30% 3. Frmat (Title page, page numbers, fnt, pint size)... 10% All papers shuld be ed using either Micrsft Wrd r PDF frmat by 5:00 PM f the date due. The class cde PT 401 and the title f the assignment MUST appear in the subject line f the fr yu t get credit fr yur wrk. Once submitted, yu shuld receive a cnfirmatin frm me verifying I received the assignment. If yu d nt receive a cnfirmatin within 24 hurs f sending, please cntact me immediately s yu d nt lse credit fr the assignment. All papers MUST be turned in n time. Late papers will be accepted nly if prir arrangements have been made and with a lss f grade pints per day late. IV. Spiritual and Academic Integrity Classrm Behavir: 1. Arrive n time!! If yu arrive late, it is yur respnsibility t see me after class t ensure yur attendance has been recrded. Failure t d s will result in being marked absent fr class. Each student must participate in class discussins. 4. Bring a ntebk r cmputer t class t take ntes. Attendance Plicy If yu are anywhere frm 1 t 9 minutes late, yu will be cunted as late; if yu are 10 minutes r mre late, yu will be cunted as absent. If yu leave class 10 minutes r mre early, yu will be cunted as absent. If yu miss a class, yu are respnsible t get the class ntes frm ther students. In yur student prtal, yu are able t track yur attendance. If yu miss mre than fifteen (15) percent f this class, yu will be autmatically drpped frm the rster and receive an F fr the curse. The amunt missed cntains the accumulatin f tardies, cuts, and any ther absences. Academic Hnesty: Cheating, plagiarism, cllusin, and any act designed t give an unfair advantage t the student (such as, but nt limited t, submitting the same written assignment fr tw curses r prviding false r misleading infrmatin in an effrt t receive a pstpnement r an extensin n a test, quiz, exam, r ther assignment) is cnsidered cheating and will nt be tlerated.
