The mannequin that lived is an entertaining fairy tale about a mannequin that came alive. Read on the unravel a comical series of events. QUESTIONS 1. She inherited patience from her previous existence. a. What does previous existence refer to? b. How do you think she inherited patience from it? c. How do we know that she had inherited patience? Ans: a. Previous existence refers to the life she had lived before she became a lady/ b. In her previous existence the lady had been a dummy who had stood still all day. This taught her patience.
c. The mannequin patiently waited all night so that she could leave the shop. This tells us that she had inherited patience. 2. Hush! murmured the policeman. Look here! a. Who was the policeman hushing? b. Where was he asking him to look and why? Ans: a. The policeman was hushing the crowd that had gathered around the injured mannequin. b. The policeman was pointing to the hole in the lady s head. The hole was large which meant that the lady was injured. It was surprising that the lady was standing despite such a large hole in her head. 3. Inspector Mugg said, I ll believe it when I see it. Ans: Yes, Inspector Mugg is a man of sense because he refuses to believe anything that he cannot see. Inspector Mugg refused to believe that a wax dummy could have a large hole in the head and still be alive.
PARAPHRASE January CHAPTER 18 A time to talk This poem highlights the importance of maintaining relationship, and helps us understand that even with a lot of work to do, it is essential that we take a little time to talk to others. The speaker is a farmer who is working in a field. His friend rides past on a horse and calls out to him. He slackens his pace, indicating his wish to talk to the farmer. The speaker does not look around at the work that remains to be completed and does not shout out to his friend, wanting to know what he wants. Instead he leaves his hoe behind and walks to his friend, ready to spend some time talking.
QUESTIONS 1. Though the person on the farm has a lot to do, he stops to talk to his friend. Why? Ans: The speaker understands the importance of keeping in touch with his friends and neighbours. He realizes that just as there is a time to work, there is also a time to talk. 2. What are the poet s feelings about friends stopping by for a friendly chat? Ans: The poet believes that friends are an essential part of life and that we Ans: The poet believes that friends are an essential part of life and that we should learn to forget our work for a little while and enjoy ourselves with our friends.
SUMMARY January CHAPTER 19 At the Maze The oldest hedge maze in the world in continuous use is Britain s maze at Hampton Court Palace. Jerome K Jerome gives a very vivid account of the Hampton Court Maze in Three Men in a Boat (not forgetting the Dog) written in The hilarious book is about three friends, George, Harris and the author himself, who along with the dog Montmorency decide to go on a holiday. In this extract, Harris leads tourists into the maze at Hampton Court and gets everybody hopelessly lost. QUESTIONS 1. Harris considered tha maze admission fee a waste. Ans: Harris thought that the maze was so simple that it was not worth the money charged for admission.
2. Members of the procession blessed Harries. Ans: The people in the procession were men and women who had been there for hours and had lost hope of ever getting out. They were pleased that Harris could lead them out and blessed him. 3. The crowd looked dangerous. Ans: Harris had assured the people that he would lead them out of the maze. But Harris was unable to find the way out of the maze despite walking for a long time. In fact, the crowd found that they were going around in circles. At this point Harris suggested finding the entrance and starting again. But ten minutes after they had started, they were back at the centre of the maze. The uselessness of the map and Harris s inability to keep his promise annoyed the crowd very much indeed. 4. The young keeper was unable to find them. Ans: The keeper who came to find the crowd was young and had just started at his job. So he was unfamiliar with the maze and unable to find the crowd.
5. We ll just walk round for ten minutes, and then go and get some lunch. Why was Harris so confident? Ans: Harris had the map to the maze. It looked very simple. This was the reason for his confidence in telling his cousin that he would need only ten minutes in the maze and they would then be free to have lunch. 6. It s absurd to call it a maze. Does Harris change his opinion about the maze at the end of the extract? Why? Ans: Yes, at the end of the extract Harris expressed the opinion that it was a very find maze indeed. Harris had earlier studied the map of the maze and decided that it was very simple. However, after he had spent some time wandering around the maze, unable to find his way out, he had changed his opinion of the maze.
7. That made Harris mad.. What is that? Why did it make him mad? Ans: That was the opinion expressed by the woman with the baby that Harris was an imposter. It made Harris mad because he was trying to find the way out by following the map. He was annoyed that his genuine efforts to help others were not appreciated. 8...and the thing seemed simpler than ever. What is the thing? Why did it seem simple? Ans: The thing is the map. Harris found that they had reached the centre of the maze by accident. This made it easy to find the way out of the maze and that is why the map seemed simpler than it had before.
9..he couldn t help feeling that, to a certain extent, he had become unpopular. What caused him to feel this way? Ans: Harris had promised to lead the people in the maze to the entrance. But once he began walking around the maze, he found that the map didn t help at all. When they found the centre of the maze, it seemed as if finding the way out would now be simple. But each time they set out they found themselves back at the centre. When Harris consulted the map again, the crowd told him to use it to curl his hair because it was completely useless. This made him realize that he had become unpopular Syllabus Completed
