Did your friends agree with you? Or did they make fun of you for not going along with them? William Franklin, enjamin Franklin s son, said no during the conflict called the merican Revolution: he believed in England s right to rule the thirteen colonies. He eventually lost his job, family, and property because of his beliefs. William and his father were close and had much in common. They both liked books and horses and enjoyed working together on en s scientific experiments, including the famous kite and key demonstration that proved lightning is electricity. They both served as clerks for the Pennsylvania ssembly, their colony s governing body. When en became deputy postmaster general for the colonies, William took over his father s previous job as Philadelphia postmaster. They received honorary degrees from Oxford University in England during the same ceremony. In 1759 en and William went to Scotland. en wrote that he spent six weeks of the densest happiness I have ever met with in any part of my life. They toured the countryside, dining with aristocrats and talking with university professors who recognized en s scientific achievements. fter following in his father s footsteps for thirty years, William earned his own appointment as governor of New Jersey in He was a well-liked official who improved roads and helped struggling farmers and frequently hosted banquets for ritish lords. t one of his state dinners, olonel George Washington himself was a guest. Meanwhile, en was working for colonial rights in England. Relations between the colonies and their mother country were becoming more and more tense. When en s defense of the colonial cause cost him his position as deputy postmaster, he urged William to resign his governorship. ut William refused. Sometime in 1775, en visited William in Perth mboy. s they walked around town, many citizens heard them quarreling. For three days they argued with each other, their beliefs as opposite as day and night. ut, in spite of his family ties, William chose to remain loyal to his king. Soon William was arrested by colonial patriots. On 4 July 1776, while en was signing the Declaration of Independence, William was entering a loyalist prison in onnecticut. fter his release through an exchange of prisoners with the ritish, William continued to take part in loyalist activities until he was forced to flee to England. s many as half a million colonists remained loyal to England in those difficult days. The loyalists were harassed by their patriot neighbors, and many had to leave their homes and families, fleeing to anada, England, or the West Indies. Years afterward, John dams estimated that about a third of all colonists were against independence from England. The conflict between the United States and England was eventually resolved with the Treaty of Paris in ut the conflict between William and en was never settled. en took William out of his will, writing, The part he acted against me in the late war... will account for my leaving him no more of an estate he endeavored to deprive me of. Of all William Franklin s sacrifices, perhaps the greatest was his father s friendship. ut William believed that remaining loyal to the king was the only way for him to live, and he was willing to give up everything he had for that belief.
