1 May During our May membership Commanders meeting Corner we will recognize our past year departed legionnaires From the with desk a of Post the Commander Everlasting Hardin ceremony. Post 113 June will be here before you know it. During the June meeting we will have the installation of new officers. There will be a FREE membership appreciation night on June 16 th. The membership appreciation night is for members only (no guests /not open to the public)! The appreciation night will include a FREE dinner and DJ Party Arty. Come out and show your support and meet the new commanders, President and ALR Director! I want to thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve as commander for Hardin Post 113 for the past two years. I have gained valuable insight into overseeing a large nonprofit organization. Having had the best executive board during the past two years we accomplished so much with so little. I also must mention our rock-solid relationships between legion families is a model for other posts to emulate! In our post, we have not only seen but also inspired progressive growth. Progress was not just financially but was also in our membership and legion programs. Please continue to support the new leadership as there is still a great deal of work to be accomplished. Again, I want to express my deep gratitude for your dedication and support. I look forward to working together in the future. John S. Saunders, Commander The old saying, It s always been that way has never inspired growth or new ideas. - John Saunders Auxiliary Unit 113 From the desk of the President Auxiliary Unit Cecil Druen Roy Dodson Michael Harville Winslow Borzotra George Childers, Sr. Raymond Pearl Donald Appler Johnny Lyons Post 113 member: Kenneth Fowler April showers bring May flowers! As members of the American Legion Family, our focus is the red poppy. This month we celebrate American Legion Family National Poppy Day on May 25 th. Wear your poppy proudly! It is a recognized symbol of sacrifice worn by Americans since World War I to honor those who served and died for our country in all wars. It reminds Americans of the sacrifices made by our veterans while protecting our freedoms. We will distribute poppies for donations throughout the month at various events and locations. Contact Jerilynn Kabel at to sign up and help distribute poppies. The Legion Family, together with other organizations in the community, will honor our veterans on Memorial Day and throughout the month with various activities. Please don t be afraid to volunteer, our veterans depend upon us! The election of Unit officers and their installation is May 10 th at the next general membership meeting. Join me in the election process and support our future leaders moving into the next year. May 12 th is the Legion breakfast and May 26 th is breakfast for Bikes, Blues and BBQ. Yes there are two breakfast Saturdays in May with lots of opportunity to volunteer! May 25 th is National Poppy Day. Our Unit will distribute red paper poppies around the Hardin County for donations. The Auxiliary raffle is still ongoing; please support the effort to sell 5000 tickets. Tickets are available for distribution at the next general membership meeting or contact Donna Thurman at for tickets. Drawing for raffle is July 4 th, winners 1 st $500, 2 nd $250, and 3 rd $100. Ticket price is $1. Remember we give five $750 scholarships, one for each of the area high schools. That s $3,750 we need to raise for the Unit scholarship program. Please help! As always, remember to give of your time and treasures in selfless service for veterans, the military, their families, and their communities. Finally, thank you to all who have supported me as Unit President for the past two years. What we did together was an amazing accomplishment reflecting how much we care about our veterans, their families and their communities. Please continue to support The American Legion Family. Diane Kennedy, President, ALA Hardin Unit 113

Poppy Poster winners - Angeline Wilson, Bryleigh Brawner, Bryson Brawner and Jerilynn Kabel, ALA member and Past President. In Flanders field the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce hear amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow. Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high If we break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. 5 Chaplains Corner Look Up! I will lift up my eyes to the hills - from whence comes my help?! My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. Psalm 127:1-2 God will come to you...in the form of a hospital companion or Holy Commander? Perhaps. Or He may come through the words of a scripture or the kindness of a friend. Why, He may even speak to you through an article like this one. But this much is certain...god comes to His people. The Commander of the Armies of heaven is here among us! - Psalm 46:7. You are no exception to this promise. His love includes all people. And He is for YOU. If God is for us, who can be against us! - Romans 8:31. Are you facing a Jericho level challenge? Do you face a diagnosis, difficulty or defeat that keeps you from knocking down the walls? If so, do what Joshua did: When Joshua was by Jericho, he lifted his eyes and looked.and behold a Man stood opposite him - Joshua 5:13. After Joshua lifted his eyes he saw Jesus. As long as our eyes are only on our Jericho, we won t see Jesus. Believe his His word - Look up! The Lord, your Help, is coming!
