4 Opinion A Fridy, August, 0 THEIR view The next few yers re key for eduction As summer vction for students ners n end, now is good time to tke look t the stte of K- schools in North Crolin, given the significnt chnges legislted over much of this decde by the Republicn-led legislture. One notble is the chnge in control of the Deprtment of Public Instruction long with number of other moves tht re chnging the fce of public eduction in North Crolin. The overriding question the public hs to sk is: Will legisltive nd dministrtive chnges by Stte Superintendent Mrk Johnson result in smller clss sizes, higher reding nd mth scores, grdution rtes, nd recruitment nd retention of techers? Give the Republicns credit; they hve mde strong effort to improve public schools since they took control of the legislture. Remember, elections hve consequences. At the end of the dy every person in the stte covets better schools. Better schools result in students being better prepred for college, creers nd ssuming the role of being responsible nd informed citizens.
