3 The Opioid Crisis: How does it affect me? Submitted by Diane Grumbine, Staff Development Anyone who has watched the TV news in recent months will know that an opioid crisis exists in the United States. Why should we care? Illegal drugs and drug addictions have been occurring throughout our lifetimes. It is the subject matter in umpteen Law and Order and other TV detective shows. There are no junkies or drug dealers here at CCC. Unfortunately, though, times have changed and drug addiction issues have changed in recent years. The difference with the current crisis is that it has been caused by the medical community. Opioids are medications that used to be prescribed only for acute surgical pain and for people with cancer or who were expected to die soon. Twenty-five years ago they were not given for chronic pain. In recent decades the practice of prescribing opioids changed, the drug companies convinced the medical community that if a person was actually in pain then taking opioid pain medication was not addictive. The result is that now up to 4 million people in the United States use these medications on a regular basis. Every age group, race, economic segment of society in every part of the country is affected. Opioids are a group of medications that control pain; examples are oxycodone (Percocet), hydrocodone (Vicodin, Norco), OxyContin, Fentanyl and morphine. Addiction can occur and overdose is common. One effect of overdose with these medications is to slow down or stop respirations. As we age our bodies become less efficient at clearing medications out of our system due to decreased kidney & liver function. As a result, older people may become addicted or have adverse effects at a lower dose. In general, older people take more medication than other age groups which leads to a greater risk for drug interactions or mistakes. Often side effects of opioid abuse can mimic symptoms we might expect of an aging individual like confusion or memory loss. There are some warning signs that someone may be abusing these medicines, if they: 1. Get a prescription for the same medicine from two different doctors. 2. Fill a prescription for the same medicine at two different pharmacies. 3. Take more of a medicine than they used to or take more than is instructed on the label. 4. Take the medicine at different times or more often than is instructed on the label. 5. Become more withdrawn or angry. 6. Appear confused or forgetful. 7. Often talk about a medicine. 8. Are afraid to go somewhere without taking a medicine. 9. Are defensive when you ask about a medicine. 10. Make excuses for why they need a medicine. 11. Store extra pills in their purse or in their pocket. 12. Sneak or hide medicine. 13. Have been treated for alcohol, drug, or prescription drug abuse in the past. Are opioids always bad? Of course not. Opioid use should be reserved for pain management when the pain is not able to be managed any other way. The benefit should always outweigh the risk. Elimination of unnecessary suffering is key to a decent quality of life. We just need to be aware of the risks and use opioids as more of a last resort instead of the first choice for pain control and use the lowest dose we can. Proceed with caution.
4 John s Jottings by John Landis, Chaplain Faith Faith is very important. Faith puts wheels on belief and puts our belief into action. Faith is alive and seldom is spoken of as a noun in the Bible. (James 2:17 - In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.) Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. There is a list of people given in Hebrews, Chapter 11, who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice and gained what was promised; who shut the mouths of lions, quenched the fury of flames and escaped the edge of the sword; whose weakness was turned to strength; and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies. Women received back their dead who were raised to life again. Others were chained, tortured and put in prison. Others refused to be released so that they might gain a better resurrection. Some faced jeers and flogging and were put to death by the sword. They were stoned, sawed in two, being put to death. They went about in sheep skins and goat skins, destitute, persecuted and mistreated (the world was not worthy of them). They wandered in deserts, mountains, caves and holes in the ground. These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised. God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect. Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders us, and the sin that so easily entangles us, and run with patience the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy set before him, endured the cross, scorning its shame and then sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him, who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you do not become weary and lose heart. (Hebrews.12:1-3) We continue to believe in Jesus Christ because we know who taught us and are sure of what we believe. Why? We are experiencing in our lives the results of faith in Jesus who lives in and through us. We received the Holy Spirit when we were born again. We have been given the righteousness of Jesus Christ. So, we will with a firm hope continue to live by faith, in patience, wait for the Lord to complete his work of life in us. We bear the marks of Jesus, living his holiness, a fruit as evidence, we are living what we have received through Jesus. Without trust in Jesus there is no hope. Without faith there is no life. Without life there is no fruit of Jesus. Bible Talk You are invited to join John Landis for a Bible Study every Monday at 10:00am in the Multi- Purpose Room. September 19 th 10:00am in the Multi-Purpose Room

Mike Miller passed away unexpectedly at his residence. He was a volunteer bus driver for CCC for the past 14 years and very dedicated in serving the residents in this role. He was very busy with volunteering in various organizations but would always find time each month to help with transportation, adjusting his schedule if necessary so that our residents could go on the scheduled trip. Mike has been a blessing to the residents and staff at CCC and will be greatly missed.
