6 FOR THE CHLDREN Why The Eagle s Bald Ho! Ho! laughed a small voce rght by Donalds elbow ve been rdng around on the back of that baldheade d eagle for the last ten mnutes and you ddnt see me! Why, bless you, had to walk rght up to you and touch you on the elbow before you even knew was around! Cone to thnk of t, daresay your nurse s rght, Donald, when she says you are asleep most of the tme! Well, well, how are you today, my lttle man? And would you lke me to tell you a story about eagles? Let me see oh, yes, suppose, tell you why the eagle s bald Look at the en gravng of hm on any of our Amercan cons and youll see that, always, hes as bald as as a funny old man who lves next door to you and gves yon pennes for candy Shall tell you about t? Now wasnt t oddbutwould von beleve t, Donald had been thnkng about that yerv thng as he was standng n front of the huge avary at the Zoo watchng the eagles fly about, ther gant wngs beatng the ar wth mghty strokes But then, remember, hs queer lttle ftend seemed always to know just what Donald was thnkng when at the Zoo He was called the Old Man of the Woods; and you may be qute sure you have never seen such a queer halfsprt e, halffar y as he was To begn wth, he was no bgger then a mnute so you can see for yourself how tny he was And then, he wore the cutest lttle breeches magnable, made of the fur of the brown and the polar bear Hs coat, or cloak, was fashoned of the wngs of hummngbrd s and, stckng straght up on ether sde of hs shny bald head, were two horns Hs face was old and wrnkled, vet the jollest face you ever saw He carred a magc wand and, goodness me, what strange thngs he could accomplsh by wavng t! Of course lttle Donald wanted to hear the story For hs frend, the Old Man of the Woods, had often before bobbed up from nowhere, whle Donald was lookng at the anmals at the Zoo, and told hm the most mraculous of yarns Well sad the Old Man, makng hmself comfortable on the grass, t was ths way, Donald Way way back n the old, old days when all the anmals lved n the Bg ungle and was ther Ruler, the Eagle wasnt bald at all n fact, he bad the most luxurant crop of brght red feathers you ever saw Yes ndeed And t was parted n the mddle, too But Eagle was mserable My, my, what an unhappy fellow he was! He had tred to woo her long and ardently but to no aval She smply wouldnt marry hm and told hm so So poor Eagle wandered around through the jungle, too heartsc k to even stretch hs gant wngs and soar aloft nto the clear sunshne So, one day, whle sunnng hmself on a rock and broodng over hs unhappy lot, who should come along but Old Gray Monk Now ths monkey, you must know, was the chef troublemake r of the entre lunge Ana there was nothng he loved qute so much as a practcal joke ndeed, he never overlooked an opportunty to play some prank on one of the anmals My, my Eagle, sad Gray Monk n sympathetc tones, what s the matter? Dd your breakfast dsagree wth you? But Eagle just looked at hm out of the corner of one eye and sad never a word Hummmm, remarked Gray Monk presently Vye just had a most nterestng talk wth the far Mss Eagle Ths tme Eagle turned hs head Yes, contnued Gray Monk, lookng off nto space and speak ng qute as though the subject ddnt really nterest hm n the least, and she was tellng me what a handsome fellow you Eagle turned all the way round and smled What a handsome fellow you would be, contnued Gray Monk, f the feathers on your head were only some other color Oh! gasped Eagle, very much dsapponted And then agan, Oh! Old Gray Monk sat hmself down on the lock very delberately and began toyng wth a loose pebble or two But he sad never a word Fnally, unable to bear the suspense anv longer, Eagle spoke up, Gray Monk, he sad, ve always been good to you, havent, always your frend? Certanly! Well welldd she say er that er a was all rght except for my red topknot? Old Gray Monk smled softly behnd hs paw Yes, he repled soberly, she dd But she now you wont get mad, wll you, uager out sue sad, that yourm red head gave jmjam s her the Now er a now ve a sugges ton to make, Eagle, that thnk wll fx everythng just about rght for you! But dont suppose you really care what she thnks of you, after all, do you? Dd he? Why rght then and there poor Eagle broke down and told Old Gray Monk all hs troubles And he wept and wept untl the tears ran down hs sharp beak lke water out of a garden hose Oh, f only Gray Monk would help hm! Anythng he would do anythng f t would but wn favor (or hm n the eyes of hs far charmer! Old Oray Monk scratched hs head a moment or two, deep n thought Ah he cred presently have t! The very thng! Now! see here, Eagle, let me pull out every one of those red feathers of yours yes, tll hurt, dare say, but just thnk of your reward! Then ll take them to my good frend Bunny Rabbt and get hm to make them up nto a wg and then dye t purple and yellow and green wth a specal dye he makes out of herbs and roots and dandelons tll ft so snugly on your head that youll never even dream t snt growng there Ah! can just see Mss Eagle when she gazes upon you then! Why, shell fall rght nto your arms mean yoar outstretched wngs! Eagle consented nstantly And one by one, whle the tears streamed from hs eyes, the offend ng red feathers were plucked from hs head Then Gray Monk hurred away wth them to Bunny Rabbt Late n the afternoon he returned wth the many colored wg Behold! t ftted Eagle perfectly! And t surely was a gorgeous affar! Now, sad Gray Monkstand ng off a bt, head cocked on one sde, and pretendng to admre hs handwork, you certanly are handsome!
