GUERNSEY COUNTY Compiled by Charlotte Stewart; formatted by Nancy Mehaffie History Guernsey Co.: Created 1810 Parent Co.; Belmont & Muskingum On January 31, 1810, the Ohio government authorized the creation of Guernsey County. Residents named the county after the "Isle of Guernsey." 1 In 1796, Ebenezer Zane received funds to cut a road from Ohio to Kentucky. He named one of the first settlements Cambridge in honor of a town in Maryland. A group of early pioneers from the Isle of Guernsey in the British Channel settled in Cambridge in 1806 because the women in the party declined to travel any further. The new county of Guernsey was formed in Central to the history of the area was the construction of the National Road (U.S. Route 40) through Cambridge in Many bridges also were built in that period, including the first bridge authorized in the Northwest Territory. 2 Guernsey County vital records began being recorded in the 19th century at the County Courthouse, with the Court of Common Pleas and/or Probate Court. Before 1810 March 1, London, Oxford, and Millwood Township records can be found at the Belmont County Courthouse in St. Clairesville, and the other townships' records can be found at the Muskingum County Courthouse in Zanesville. Recording of many of these events was transferred to state or federal responsibility in the 20th century. HAMMOND, one of the oldest inhabitants of Guernsey County, has had his abode for many years on his farm, which is located on Section 12, Adams Township. He is a native of Washington County, Pa., where his birth occurred September 16, His parents were William and Mary (Weir) Hammond, the former a native of Ireland, and the latter of Scotland. William Hammond, with his brothers, John, Robert and David, came to the United States before the Revolutionary War. John volunteered his services in the Continental army and participated in the battles of Brandywine and Bunker Hill, being wounded in the latter engagement. The brothers settled on the Susquehanna River, where they all took up claims, but the Indians were so hostile in that locality that they removed to Hickory, Washington County, Pa. William Hammond came to Guernsey County in John M. Hammond is one of eight children. His brother James was a merchant at Pittsburg, and later removed to Kentucky, where he studied medicine. He married a Kentucky lady, who died a few years later, and after that sad event the Doctor wrote home that he was going to leave there and would let them know of his future location, but he was never again heard from. David came to this county and died in Cambridge. Mary became the wife of William Blair, and both passed to their final rest while residents of this county. Sarah became the wife of Thomas Ford, and both are deceased. Jane, who married Samuel Atchison, now deceased, makes her home at Bloomfield, Ohio. Annie became the wife of David Dew, of this county; and William married Matilda Parks, who survives him and is a resident of New Concord.

John M. Hammond was educated in the common schools of his native state. November 28, 1827, he married Elizabeth Scott, daughter of Francis and Betsey (Hunter) Scott. Mrs. Hammond died June 26, Her brother, aged ninety-four, is still living in this county. After his marriage our subject purchased the farm where he still resides. After buying a tract of eighty acres, on which were some improvements, he settled in the woods, in To himself and his wife were born eleven children, James, who graduated from Muskingum College, and his brother Francis, who had like advantages, taught school for some time, and in 1851 went to California by the overland route. James married Margaret Mahaffey. Francis returned a year sooner than his brother, and clerked in the Auditor s office until 1860, when he was elected Auditor, and served for three terms. In 1873 he went to Washington, and was appointed, under Grant, in the auditing department of the Treasurer s office. He married Margaret Tingle, and died in the Capitol City in October James engaged in teaching school and in farming for a number of years, and in 1876 became interested in the real-estate and pension business in Olathe, Kan. During the war he was Adjutant of a company of the One Hundred and Seventy-second Infantry. William, the third son, learned the wagon-maker s trade, and is still working at the same in Bloomfield, Muskingum County. He enlisted for one hundred days in the One Hundred and Sixtieth Ohio Regiment, and served in Virginia. He married Margaret Little, who died, and he afterward married Esther McConnaha. Elizabeth, wife of William McClelland, died in John, born in 1835, learned his brother William s trade and is still following that vocation in Otsego, Muskingum County, this state. He married Martha Guthrie. He was with his brother in the one hundred days service in Virginia, in the One Hundred and Sixtieth Regiment. David, born in 1839, was a member of the Ninety-seventh Ohio Infantry, and served in Kentucky. Owing to sickness, he became almost blind, but later recovered and joined the Ohio National Guards. He married Cassandra Britton, since deceased. After his marriage he removed to Iowa, where he is still engaged in farming. Robert, born in 1838, who is a Justice of the Peace and a leading citizen of Cambridge, married Ella Simons. Johnson, born in 1840, served for four years and four months in the Fifteenth Ohio Regiment, and was wounded at the battle of Stone River, a ball passing under his heart and one bullet through his thigh. He went on the Atlanta campaign and was present at the battle of Mission Ridge. He received an honorable discharge on the 31st of December He married Susannah Rankin. His death occurred February 18, Charles, born in 1842, enlisted in the Fifteenth Ohio Infantry in 1864, and served through the Atlanta campaign and in the battle of Nashville. He is now a farmer of Adams Township, Guernsey County. He married Isabel McClelland. Mary J. is the wife of David Mackey, of Adams Township. Alexander, born in 1846, has always worked on the old homestead. He married Anna M. Johnston, and by their marriage eight children were born, five now living. In all John Hammond has seventy-two grandchildren. John M. Hammond in his early life was a Jackson Democrat and later was a Free Soiler. He was one of the first to espouse the cause of the Republican party in his state. For many years he has been a Justice of the Peace, and has also held the offices of Township Trustee, Township Treasurer and Clerk. For about forty years he was an Elder in the United Presbyterian Church, in which he has also served as Deacon. He has many interesting reminiscences of pioneer life and the days when hardships and privations were a matter of course. --:======= =):(= =======:-- Ohio GenWeb: MOWRYSTOWN DEATHS Presented as Donated by Joyce Kollenberg :-) "(Please note I have sorted this list of name by Last Name, First Name, than Year of Death, to help fellow researcher looking for surnames. BLAIR, James??? 80 acres??sec 11 BLAIR, Alexander, JR?? 62 acres??sec 5 BLAIR, Alexander, SR?? 40 acres??sec 7 s and Queries Bob Stewart, member I will answer two s here; the recent BSGR lineage request, and one you sent last May. In May you asked about the Blairs in Guernsey Co, OH, in which you said: "I have a Blair family there that has a daughter Mary Elinor Blair and a daughter, Elizabeth. Different researchers have submitted the data that both girls married an unknown Stewart and her sister James Stewart. Their brother James married Isabelle Oliver. One of these researchers also shows that Elizabeth had a son Nixon Stewart. Thus, the thought occurred to me that there may be a connection to your family. The Blairs also came from Ireland c or so. My only problem with this connection is that their father was not named William. What is your source for her father's name? and for her name? I truly believe this may be your Stewart family connection to the Blairs based on the use of the name Nixon. We just need to compare notes and see who had the data correct." Well, you are right. The "William" came from some spurious source, and is clearly wrong. Dr. Stewart's early 1900 notes say James Stewart [noting that he is Dr.'s grandfather's brother], b. 8 April 1809, d. 25 Oct 1891, m. Eliza [sic] Blair, b. 1811, d. 1890, m. 8 Nov They had 8 children: James, 8 Sep 1833; Mary, 18 Jun 1836, d. 5 Feb 1884; Jane, 11 May 1838, d. 18 Feb 1906; Nixon B., 7 Sep 1840 d. unk. [I have an obit dated 1 March 1915]; John, a twin to Nixon B., d. 8 Sep 1912; Samuel, b. Jan, 1843; d. unk.; Elizabeth, b. 1844, d. unk.; Henry, 10 July 1853, d. unk. This is followed by a notation: Henry W.-Hugh-& Isabel died under 4 mo. Also Margaret. He also notes that the brothers John and James Stewart married sisters; Mary the second daughter and Elizabeth the oldest. And on another page, he notes that James, b. in Muskingum Co., went to Guernsey Co. At I note that James made seven land purchases in Guernsey County from the General land Office between 1823 and Their son was Nixon B. Stewart, and not the Nixon Stewart of John and Mary in my direct line. I do not know if there is a connection between Margaret Oliver Stewart, mother of John and James, and the Isabelle Oliver that James Blair married. Again, my source [unless otherwise noted] is the records of Dr. Earl M. Stewart, grandson of John & Mary, and was compiled in the early 1900s. That would account for the lack of some

death dates--those people were still alive when he typed up his notes. (I also have the handwritten notes, but they are hard to follow) So that ties down that connection, and I can discard that spurious name "William." Now to the BSGR lineage request. Here are the pertinent parts of your text back, with all the amended information I have: John Blair & Margaret. I have no change to that. 2, Welby Earl Stewart, and 3 Iris Celestia Tower. No changes. Their children are Hugh Warren, b. Nebr, living; Robert Earl, living, b. Iowa; and Sharon, living, b. Washington, D.C. To #4. Earl Minor Stewart, you might add the initials M.D. as he was a country doctor all his life. WIth Hallie Shue, their children, all b. Imperial, Chase Co, NE, were: Welby Earl (as above) Kermit Gladstone, b. 29 Dec 1909, d. Sep 1982, Virginia and buried in Arlington National Cemetery; Hubert Clare, b. 17 Aug 1916; d. July 1981, NE; and Jean Marie (living) To #8, Nixon Stewart, he m. 15, Nov Civil War veteran. and Mary Ann Almina (Molly) Shroyer, d. 17 May Their children, all b. Adamsville, Muskingum Co, OH, were Ora Eva, b. 26 Sep 1867, d. 6 Jun 1951, Glouster, Ohio; Atta Etta, b. 7 July 1871, d. unk.; and Earl Minor [#4 above]. To #16 John Stewart, he was b. 29, not 28 Aug, to #17 Mary Elinor Blair, I have a birth date of 10 Sep. and you have 9 Sep. Their children were Mary Jane, b. 27 Mar 1815, d. 19 Sep 1819; James, b. 20 Dec 1836, d. infancy; John J. b. 25 Dec 1838, d. 4 Jul 1864 (Accidentally shot self during Civil War) Margaret, b. 19 Oct 1840; d. 21 Jan 1914; Nixon [#8, above]; Ann, b. 18 Jun 1844, d. next day.; Hugh W. b. 30 May 1846, d. 3 Oct. 1881; Anna Elizabeth, b. 8 Jul 1848, d. 16 Jan 1919; Martha Jane, b. 12 Jul 1850; d. 15 Feb 1882; Mary Eliza, b. 17 May 1854; d. 18 Jan I can add married names to most of the women mentioned above, but that gets somewhat far away from the Blair line. My sister married a John Stewart, so the headline for the wedding story read "Stewart Now, Stewart Forever." And my brother Hugh's second wife is Sharon, who avoids any family confusion by being "Sharon Smith-Stewart." Finally, I have two sons, Mitchell and Scott, both living and married, and one grandchild, Teryn, 8. My sister has one son, Dylan, and one grandson, Dylan. My brother has one adopted daughter, Jennifer, and one natural son, Glen. Jennifer has a daughter, and Glen's wife is expecting. I hope this adds something to the body of knowledge generally. There's a lot of detail above-- Feel free to ask questions because I must have been confusing (or confused) on something above. 16 I have an from you dated May 3, 2002, in which you gave me a basic outline of Mary's parents, brothers sisters etc. I don't have any indication I responded, though I may have. Pardon the repetition if I did. In it, you said the children of John Blair and Margaret include "v. Mary Blair, born 1815, died 1852 in Center Twp." You then said "There is obviously something wrong with the death dates shown above for both Mary and Elizabeth." Did I ever tell you: I have Mary as died Dec. 6, 1885, and buried in Fairview Cemetery, Adams Twp. That is from Dr. Stewart's records from the early 1900s, and I am confident it is correct. In Dr. Stewart's notes, he has a page for "Stewart-Blair " [I assume the marriage date] James, born , died [note that here he gives us his date sequence--year, month, day] Elizabeth The page is in that old purple ink typewriters used; some pages are in black typewriter. And so, in black ink far back in the notebook I find the same entry, with more detail: sorry, he still didn't affix month/day for Elizabeth birth or death. "Stewart--Blair: My Grand-Father's Brother" Children: i. James, 9/8/1833; ii Mary, 6/18/1836-2/05/1884; iii Jane, /18/1906; iv Nixon B 9/7/1840 (no death date); v John, 9/7/1840-9/8/1908 (twins?); vi Samuel, 1/--/1843; vii Elizabeth, 1844; viii Henry, 7/10/1853. "Henry W. Hugh & Izabel died under 4 mo. Also Margaret. Then a purple typewriter ink entry "John-the older son of James Stewart and Margaret Oliver Married Mary Blair, the second daughter, while James the second son married Elizabeth, the oldest daughter of the same family. Brothers married Sisters." All of this sent for what it's worth. Perhaps there's something new, or something I overlooked if I answered earlier. Bob Stewart Member 1050 Carson City NV Subject: Date: From: To: Re: Your Blair Ancestors Thu, 2 May :55:24 EDT RStew160@aol.com cstewart@twd.net Initial comments: Nixon Stewart was from Muskingum Co, Ohio--Adamsville. There was concurrently a Nixon B. Stewart in another part of Ohio. He is so distant a relative I have never looked at his lineage. The Mary Blair line I am confident with--my grandfather E.M. Stewart, M.D., b. 1871, gathered his family information in agonizing detail in the early 1900s. It makes the tie you're seeking. Doctor's records were largely contemporaneous, and you will find them cited occasionally in other family genealogies. My father then gathered some added material, but mostly organized doctor's research. (As you can guess, even E.M. Stewart's wife called him "Doctor" during his lifetime.)

On one page: Stewart-Blair James b d Elizabeth b 1811 d 1890 Later in the loose-leaf typed volume he identifies them as "my grand-fathers brother." There he lists her as "Eliza." They are parents of:james, ; Mary, ; Jane ; ; Nixon B, ; John, d ; Samuel 43-1; Elizabeth, 44; Henry, "Henry W.-Hugh-& Izabel died under 4 mo. Also Margaret. John: The older son of James Stewart and Margaret Oliver married Mary Blair, the second daughter, while James the second son, married Elizabeth, the oldest daughter of the same family. Brothers married sisters." John is doctor's grandfather, the brother who married Mary in the sentence above. Their children include Nixon. I can list them all with birth dates, etc. if you wish. I do not know where the William came from. It is a pencil notation only, and not by doctor but from some later date so I would not trust it. SECOND I do find a page for Nixon B. Stewart, who married Margarette Ann Ruse. They had five children doctor lists, with a note that "two died in infancy." whether they are part of the five or not is not stated. I don't know why doctor didn't follow back on Mary Blair's parentage. He was always interested in what they died of, and often notes that. Nixon B.'s son Charles had "sugar diabetes," for instance. Of Mary Blair he says "Heavy set." And whoa, there--i just observed that doctor had put a prescription label marker on the James Stewart Elaza Blair page as a tab. The tab was folded back and on unfolding it I find it says "Gurnsey Co. Stewarts." Doctor has a page which he notes was "written by J. Hope Sutor for Clark Pub. Co. 1905, dedicated to the Pioneers of Muskingum Co. Ohio, Information largely gained from Dr. E.J. Blair-Lawrence, Kans." On that page doctor quotes the book as saying: "[Nixon Stewart's father] was a native of Great Britton and was born Aug. 31st 1804, and his death John was a son of James Stewart who was born Oct. 7th, 1770, and died Oct. 27, He arrived in Musk. Co. in 1820 when his son John was but 16 yrs of age and settled in Adams Twp and after arriving to the years of maturity he wedded Miss. Mary Blair.-who was born Sept. 10th She was of Scotch lineage-being a direct descendant of Mary Queen of Scots, her parents having come from the old country to America; seven children was [sic.] born to them." Anything new for you there? I am the grandson of Dr. E.M. Stewart, M.D.grandson of Mary Blair Stewart of Adamsville, Ohio. Dr. Stewart became interested in his genealogy early, and obtained dates from the individual themselves, their siblings and children, gravestones, and perhaps from a family Bible which has since disappeared but which we know existed (Genealogist Ione Bradford Supplee had a chance to record information from it later) He left a loose-leaf book in which he had typed many pages of information. He also contracted a man (Attorney C.C. Connell) in Ireland to learn what he could of the Stewarts in that country-- apparently he believed the family had some money coming. The information only provides us

with knowledge the family was living at Bannagh, between Kesh and Pettigoe. From his letter: "A Mrs. Stewart, who lives at Conelly, Banagh Lodge...told me she had heard her mother talk of Peggy Oliver; who married James Stewart and moved to America..." I hope this information is of interest and assistance to you. Please ask if you need anything further. I have, incidentally, researched Nixon's Civil War extensively and verified the story of the accidental death of John through published works. Bob Stewart Carson City NV In addition to "being there" with many of the principals during the early 1900s, doctor apparently had access to a family Bible that has since passed into other hands. Ione Bradford Supplee, ("Mrs. Genealogy" of Zanesville, Ohio, now retired to a nursing home with arthritic hands) was able to see the bible some years back, she says. It was left in the old Stewart home in Adamsville when it was sold outside the family. Why doctor never followed the Blair line back even as far as her father is beyond my ken. Even so, he and my father focused on the male lineage. After dad's death, mom joined her Tower association and learned the Towers were in their second generation in America before the Stewarts of our line arrived.
