1 ASPE REPORT AMERICAN SOCIETY OF PLUMBING ENGINEERS BOARD OF DIRECTORS Mitch Clemente, CPD President Scott Steindler, CPD, GPD, LEED AP, ARCSA-AP(IS), GGP Vice President, Technical David DeBord, CPD, LEED AP, ARCSA-AP, CFPS, FASPE Vice President, Education Carol Johnson, CPD, LEED AP, CFI Vice President, Legislative Kelvin Kennedy, CPD, GPD, CD, FASPE Vice President, Membership Vincent Scriboni Vice President, Affiliate Chris Graham, CPD, FASPE Treasurer Rui Paul Silvestre Region 1 Director Keith Bush, CPD, CSI Region 2 Director James Zebrowski, PE, CPD, FASPE Region 3 Director Don Strickland, CPD, GPD Region 4 Director Bryan Hutton Region 5 Director Cory Powers, CPD ASPE Young Professionals Liaison William Billy Smith, FASPE Executive Director/CEO From the President s Pen Mitch Clemente, CPD ASPE PRESIDENT aspepres@aspe.org ASPE s Executive Director/CEO Billy Smith, FASPE, recently shared a list of 10 things that require zero talent to be a professional that made an impression on me. I do not want to steal Billy s thunder, but with his permission I am going to focus on two things that I believe are very important in our lives and what we do for this Society. The first thing I want to touch on in the list is the word effort. In our lives, we could not survive, let alone be successful, if we did not put forth an effort in everything we do. It takes a certain level of effort to get up in the morning, to go to work, to do the job that our employer hired us for, and to support our family s needs. It also requires effort to be an ASPE volunteer, whether at the Chapter or Society level. It is one thing to serve on a committee or have a nice officer title, but it takes an effort to advance the goals that we have set for ourselves and for the responsibilities that we have agreed to accept. Life is not easy, but the volunteers of ASPE have made the effort over the years to get us where we are today. We are now depending on our most recently elected Chapter Officers and the soon-to-be-elected Society Board of Directors to carry on the mission of this organization. We need the entire team to make the effort to fulfill our obligations and to achieve the goals that will continue to make ASPE the leader in the plumbing engineering profession. The second thing I want to focus on is the word passion. This word is closely related to effort in my mind, because if you are going to make an effort to achieve a goal, you must believe in what you are doing. That means you need to have passion. Passion is what drives most professionals because their goal is to be successful in their job, gain recognition for their firm, and make their firm as profitable as possible. I believe the volunteers of ASPE have a passion to be successful, responsible leaders in the roles they have chosen to play. These leaders do their best to grow and educate our membership. They also want their Chapters and this organization to be successful and recognized as the authority in plumbing engineering. They also want to take ASPE to the next level. The recently elected Chapter Officers and the soon-to-be-elected Society Board of Directors are being handed the torch by their outgoing predecessors, and their passion is what will drive them in their newly elected roles. I am confident that through the efforts and passion of our new leaders, ASPE is in good hands and we will be successful in The 2016 Convention & Exposition in Phoenix is quickly approaching, and we are in the final stages of preparation. If you are thinking about attending, here is a quick glimpse of what to expect. The event kicks off with a Green Plumbing Design Workshop that you will not want to miss. We are then hosting the first Women of ASPE Leadership Forum, which is already generating a lot of interest. ASPE s Standing Committees will be gathering to discuss current and future projects, and the Council Meetings are geared toward educating our Chapter leaders. The Business Meeting will include an update on Society business, discussions on the proposed Bylaws changes, and of course the election of the Society Board of Directors. The Convention would also not be complete without the Exposition. This is your opportunity to spend quality time on the show floor to meet and talk with the top manufacturers in the industry. The exhibitors are anxious to show you their latest innovations, and you will earn CEUs while reviewing and discussing their products with them. This year our keynote speaker is future MLB Hall of Famer and World Series Champion Steve Garvey. I am sure he will be sharing some very inspiring stories that should invigorate and motivate all of us. In addition to the keynote address, the Sunday night party will be held at the Corona Ranch & Rodeo

2 ASPE REPORT Monthly News for ASPE Members Monthly News for ASPE Members Grounds. This will be a memorable party that you won t want to miss. The ASPE Banquet on Tuesday night is our time to honor those special individuals who have made substantial contributions to our profession and this Society. We will also be providing numerous first-class education sessions to enhance your technical knowledge, and in the process you will earn valuable CEUs for your participation. ASPE s Staff has developed some fresh new ideas that our seasoned attendees will appreciate, and if you have never been to an ASPE Convention & Expo, I recommend that you give it a try. I am always impressed with the networking and educational opportunities that are available at this biennial event, and I m sure you will be too. If you have not already registered, please do so as soon as possible. The early bird rates expire on September 28, and hotel rooms are almost sold out. My advice is that if you want to be a part of the 2016 Convention & Exposition, do not delay in registering any longer. #ASPEFlowsWest New ASPE Members Baltimore Chapter Grason Randall Mullendore Boston Chapter Rhonda Burnim Kevin David Dillon Jared Seth Marble Michael R. Southwestern Ohio AYPs Host Successful Local Tours According to Andrew Hemmelgarn, CPD, who is the ASPE Young Professionals Liaison for the Southwestern Ohio Chapter, the Chapter s young engineers and designers have recently combined networking with education during tours of local facilities. They partnered with the local Young Engineers in ASHRAE group for a tour of Rhinegeist Brewery, where they learned the processes, pumps, and piping that go into creating a favorite beer. They also toured the power plant serving the University of Cincinnati, which generates massive amounts of steam that it distributes to both the main and east campuses. Congratulations on the success of your tours and thank you for helping the career growth of young engineers! 3 ASPE REPORT Monthly News for ASPE Members From the Executive s Desk William Smith, FASPE ASPE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR/CEO bsmith@aspe.org Your Talents Can Lead to Success As I write this column, I recall the many success stories I ve witnessed that were accomplished by various individuals, companies, associations, and the like. In so many cases, those success stories were brought about through tremendously long hours and hard work to accomplish an array of goals that were set forth and achieved due to a mindset of I will not fail or we will not fail. So many times, we think that a set of talents or one obvious talent is necessary to succeed. Well, I beg to differ. Okay, I don t disagree totally, as it s accurate to assume that some small amount of talent must be present to achieve any level of success. However, very little actual talent is needed if we strive to impart some core values in every aspect of our personal and professional lives. I recently ran across a list of 10 things that take no talent but are fundamental steps that will allow each of us, and I do mean every one of us, to be successful. When you break it down, it s very simple indeed. I m not sure where this list originated, but how true it is. It is not a new idea and especially not revolutionary; however, it is something that is worth repeating. If you haven t heard it or read it before, it s worth hearing or seeing right now! I believe there is immense truth and value to believing in the following 10 components that will drive the engine that will ultimately lead to success. Take a good look in your respective mirror and put yourself through this easy test to see where you stand. 1. Being on time My wife will tell you that this is a big pet peeve of mine in that I hate being late or for you to be late. I can t imagine any reason for being late with the possible exception of an emergency, so show up on time and be ready to achieve the goals of the day. By the way, if you are on time, I really feel you are late. To be ready to achieve what you set out to do, be early and begin early. 2. Work ethic This to me is self-explanatory in that there is only one way to do anything: the right way, all the time. From an ethical standpoint, there is no excuse for anything less than your best effort. As an example, consider how you act when no one is looking versus when you are in the spotlight. You should be striving to accomplish the same level of success at all times. 3. Effort This goes hand-in-hand with work ethic. Have you or do you actually put in a hard day s work? Are you extending yourself, or just putting in time? All of these questions are directly related to your effort in achieving goals. Are you interested in the status quo, or do you plan to improve yourself each day? Let s be thankful for the opportunities we have to become successful and give our best efforts. 4. Body language OMG! This has to be one of the most important areas where we can convey to others our actual mindset on a daily basis. Regardless of the circumstances you may be in, one thing you can demonstrate to all is the fact that you are never defeated and will always compete and perform. How many times have you heard someone comment about speaking multiple languages and how important that is in some instances? Within the concept of this column, the only language that is important is our body language. It is so important to speak to others with our actions. Many times, body language is the first thing noticed when we are seen by our industry counterparts. Make a great first impression, as those are difficult to change later. 5. Energy We ve all heard about energy hogs. Are you one? Let s not be that person. Let s focus on being the person who brings it to the table and is not hauling it away. All of us need to bring good, positive energy to assist in keeping an activity going at the highest level. Having good energy and being positive can have a huge impact on how you perform, how you feel, and how others feel around you. 6. Attitude We have two choices here, and they are very simple. We can have a positive attitude or a negative attitude. There is nothing in between. Having a positive attitude will pay many dividends during any activity. Our state of mind as we head into anything can directly affect the outcome of the event or our performance. Let s focus on being positive and not negative. It s an individual thing. I ll gladly be the first, and I hope you follow. 7. Passion This is a great one. I can t imagine anyone who is or becomes successful not having a passion for what they are doing. Having passion for something will help make all of the items on this list easier to accomplish in our daily lives. Have some excitement about the things you are about to accomplish. Be passionate about staying hungry and wanting to do more. 8. Being coachable I can truthfully state that I would not be where I am today without having some very important people in my life who really cared about playing a vital role in helping teach and mold me by coaching me through some learning curves. It

4 ASPE REPORT Monthly News for ASPE Members takes a special person to be a coach; however, it takes a stronger person to realize they need coaching and understand the growth that can come from receiving this gift from others. No one is perfect. Always know that each of us can become better at our given trade. 9. Doing extra We can tie every one of these components together in a nice tidy package if we would just do extra. It s all about never being satisfied with just being average or meeting the requirements specified for a given task. Nothing will ever be a success or become successful without going that extra mile. If I m looking for someone to bring into a situation where I want to see growth and ultimately to be a success, I m not interested in a clock puncher to bring anything to fruition. I want that individual who shows up early, exceeds all requirements, and then is looking for more. Whatever it takes, let s get it done. Someone looking to be a successful team member will understand and remember that you can t spell team with the letter I. It just will not work. So, who are you going to be? What are you going to do? I hope a little extra. Don t sell yourself short. 10. Being prepared I m going to just go ahead and say this to you: If you fail to plan, then you plan to fail. I know, that s not original either, but how true it is. You can never be too prepared. Touch every base, turn over every rock. I could go on and on with these kinds of statements. Our lives today can bring about tremendous stress. Being prepared can help relieve some of our stress. Being prepared can keep us focused and organized and assist in moving our respective strategies forward. If we aren t moving forward, we are backing up. Standing still isn t an option. Let me begin closing out this column by stating the obvious. When I look in my mirror each morning and reflect back over these 10 attributes, it is clear to me that I have much work to do on myself. If I focus every day on the possibilities that can become realities, I should make a conscious effort in focusing on implementing each of these into my daily life. Can I get you to join me in doing that? Let s revisit how I began this column. I began speaking about success and how much talent may have been involved in bringing about that success. Well, I want to remind each of us that the only talent needed to implement these focus points in our lives in a manner that can bring about a level of success in all that we do is to simply take the first steps needed. Set that first goal. Look in the mirror! We all have the talent to make that a successful endeavor.
