2 THE SURPRISE CONTINUES Christmas is all about surprises: Lives are never the same after an encounter with the Christ child. The time after Epiphany demonstrates many different ways to respond to God s call. The baptism of repentance described in Acts causes people to immediately speak in tongues and prophesy. When Jesus calls the first disciples, the fishermen leave their boats and follow him instantly. On the other hand, Jonah is a fine example of how God also calls flawed and uncooperative people to carry out God s purposes. And who but God would have thought to call Saul, that violent persecutor of the followers of Jesus, to be a key figure in the spread of God s word to the Gentiles? In scripture and in our own lives, God s gifts don t always come in the desired form. A suffering Savior, rather than a triumphant Messiah, was not what everyone expected nor wanted then or now. The time after Epiphany ends with the Transfiguration. The clear message of this event is that neither Jesus nor his followers can stay on the mountaintop, removed from the mess, suffering, and evil of human life. The surprise the wise men experienced at the beginning of Jesus earthly life continues at its end in His expectation of all his followers, including you. We are to responsibly be his presence, irregardless of the cost. Pastor Starkey LOC has started an emergency fund to help LOC families in need. We are offering fire logs (as long as supply lasts) in return for a donation to the fund. Of course if you don t want any fire logs we will still accept your donation. Donations should be earmarked LOC Emergency Fund. 2 COMPLAINT DISSIPATED A woman called a newspaper office to complain that her Sunday paper hadn t arrived. Trying to calm her, the man at the office pointed out that the paper hadn t arrived because it was Saturday. After a brief silence, the woman said meekly, Well, that explains why there was no one in church today. X = KISS During the Middle Ages, when few people were able to write, many documents were signed with an X. Signers kissed the letter to affirm their sincerity in the same way they kissed the Bible when taking an oath. The letter X wasn t selected at random. It was the sign of St. Andrew, who was crucified on an X-shaped cross. The X implied a sacred promise to fulfill one s obligation in the saint s name. 11

3 BIBLE QUIZ Second Kings, chapter 5, tells of Namaan, an army commander who had leprosy. A certain prophet of the Lord sent a message to Namaan, telling him to go wash in the Jordan River seven times. Reluctantly, Namaan did so and was healed. Judah The 2009 Church Council met on January 14 th for a council meeting and also to meet with Pastor Dale. We shared with Pastor Dale committee reports and our plans regarding the call of a Pastor for Light of Christ. Pastor Dale s words were inspirational and encouraging..as usual. Cyndy Cross will coordinate members to help with our Wednesday Lenten services. 4 SUPER BOWL PARTY PLEASE PRAY FOR: All are invited to Tim & Jeanette Olvera s house, 2465 Oak Crest Drive, Turlock, for a Super Bowl Party on February 1. The party starts at 3:00 PM. Bring your own drinks and a favorite snack to share. Need a ride? Directions? Call Ash Wednesday is February 25 this year. Our Ash Wednesday service will be held at 6:30 PM this year and will include Holy Communion and the imposition of the ashes. LENTEN SERVICES All Lenten services will be held at 6:30 PM on Wednesday evenings from March 4 April 1. We will be using the Holden Evening Prayer for the services. If you would like to be a reader for one of these services please contact Cyndy Cross at Soup Suppers will be held before each Lenten Service (except Ash Wednesday) at 5:45 PM. If you can help out with one or more of our soup suppers please let us know. A sign up sheet is on the bulletin board at LOC. You can now get to our web site by using.com or.org. But if you ve previously saved it as.org when we were using the other server, you will need to re-save it. Apparently people who are using the old settings are experiencing problems with our site not loading properly.
