1 Holodomor Classroom Reflection and Activity Grade Two Vocabulary: 1. Holodomor: what happened in the Ukraine (that is a country in Europe) when the people had all their food taken away and many of them died because they didn t have anything to eat. 2. Remember: to keep something in your memory so it is not forgotten ever Visual/Text Anchor: Picture Book: Stone Soup More info on teaching Holodomor: Activity 1) no PowerPoint used but a copy of the picture book Stone Soup is needed a) Each child will colour one of the colouring pages provided (Appendix C) and bring their picture with them when they are listening to the teacher tell the story. NOTE: the colouring activity could be eliminated and the teacher could go straight to the reading of the story. b) The teacher will read the story Stone Soup to the children from a picture book they have in the classroom. c) The teacher will then talk to the children about sharing and hunger a. Why is it important to share? b. Can you think of anything else that the townspeople could have shared for the soup pot? c. How do you think the man (or soldiers depending on the story told) felt when he was hungry and no one would share their food? d. How did the man (or soldiers depending on the story told) get food for himself and the whole town? e. How did the man (or soldiers depending on the story told) feel after he shared the Stone Soup with the people of the town? f. What did the people of the town learn about sharing? d) The teacher will tell the children about Holodomor and relate it to the story Stone Soup a. A long time ago in a country called Ukraine the government decided to take all the food away from the people so the people of Ukraine had nothing to eat and nothing to share. Many, many people died because the government kept all the food and would not share it with the hungry people. b. We call the hunger time in Ukraine Holodomor. c. The people of the town in the story Stone Soup learned to share and everyone had something to eat but when Holodomor happened in the Ukraine, the government wouldn t share so no one had anything to eat. d. It is really important that everyone knows about Holodomor so we never forget what happened and it never happens again anywhere in the world. e) The teacher then says the prayer with the children: Lord, we hope and pray that people will not be hungry. And we ask you to help everyone remember Holodomor so it never happens again. Amen

2 EXTENSION: PowerPoint is used the picture book Stone Soup (see Appendix B) could be printed and a copy sent home with each child to read with their parents. The colouring page(s) could be sent home with the children who could talk to their parents about what they learned about Holodomor The coloured pages could be put on a bulletin board with the word Holodomor so the children could see it for a time and remember what they learned Activity 2) PowerPoint is used a) If the teacher has no Stone Soup picture book and no way to show the PowerPoint, a version of Stone Soup (Appendix A) is available below to be read to the children. b) The final prayer is on the PowerPoint as well. c) A version of Stone Soup is in the PowerPoint and the teacher can read the story as they click through the PowerPoint ****************************************************************************** Appendix A Stone Soup A kindly, old stranger was walking through the land when he came upon a village. As he entered, the villagers moved towards their homes locking doors and windows. The stranger smiled and asked; why are you all so frightened? I am a simple traveler, looking for a soft place to stay for the night and a warm place for a meal. "There's not a bite to eat in the whole province," he was told. "We are weak and our children are starving. Better keep moving on." "Oh, I have everything I need," he said. "In fact, I was thinking of making some stone soup to share with all of you." He pulled an iron cauldron from his cloak, filled it with water, and began to build a fire under it. Then, with great ceremony, he drew an ordinary-looking stone from a silken bag and dropped it into the water. By now, hearing the rumor of food, most of the villagers had come out of their homes or watched from their windows. As the stranger sniffed the "broth" and licked his lips in anticipation, hunger began to overcome their fear. "Ahh," the stranger said to himself rather loudly, "I do like a tasty stone soup. Of course, stone soup with cabbage -- that's hard to beat." Soon a villager approached hesitantly, holding a small cabbage he'd retrieved from its hiding place, and added it to the pot. "Wonderful!!" cried the stranger. "You know, I once had stone soup with cabbage and a bit of salt beef as well, and it was fit for a king."

3 The village butcher managed to find some salt beef... And so it went, through potatoes, onions, carrots, mushrooms, and so on, until there was indeed a delicious meal for everyone in the village to share. The villager elder offered the stranger a great deal of money for the magic stone, but he refused to sell it and traveled on the next day. As he left, the stranger came upon a group of village children standing near the road.
