1 The Ensign Zarahemla Branch Members of The Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints December 2006 Newsletter Pastor s Corner Elder Bob Moore Among the many characteristics woven into the wonderful fabric comprising our world and the greater universe of which it is a part, with its myriad of galaxies, stars and planets, is disorder. Death and decay, as well as its attending disasters and difficulties, are all around us, constantly threatening our possessions, creations and relationships. They gradually age our bodies, incapacitating them through illness and infirmity. They ruin what we make with rust, rot and erosion. They deteriorate our relationships through misunderstanding, selfishness, pride, envy and contention. Every garden sprouts weeds. Every home requires maintenance. Every happiness is eclipsed by pain or sorrow. Every tongue both praises and condemns. The hand that nurtures and heals also jests and hurts. Vice seems to taint every virtuous act. On a greater scale, we understand that the earth s magnetic field, which protects our environment from the sun s damaging ultraviolet rays, is eroding. Black holes are silently gobbling up both light and matter. An end to all we see is coming. Are we, as King Arthur wondered in T. H. White s monumental tale, merely candles in the wind? Do we, as individuals or even civilizations, momentarily flicker sublime virtues and noble ideals, only to have that tiny flame blown out by the darkening gale of disunity, betrayal, and terrorism? Are traducers and anarchists everywhere, even within our own selves? The spring of all disorder, the decay, disasters and death about us, is sin. Latter-day revelation states that disobedience takes away light (D&C 90:6c). The evil deeds that a person does or a culture allows blow against the twinkling light of heavenly virtues divinely implanted in every soul. If disobedience is great enough, particularly at the cultural level, the increasingly forceful gale will extinguish the flickering flame. Then, darkness will prevail. Are we, as King Arthur wondered in the ruins of his Camelot, forever trapped in an endless conflict between good and evil from which there is no escape and in which evil prospers? Apostle Paul asked, O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? (Rom 7:26). The truth is: everyone of us needs a Savior. We need to be saved from the wickedness that thrives without us and the evil that sprouts within. Sin lieth at the door (Gen 5:9). It bombards us any time from everywhere, enticing and exciting basic instincts that sprout within us and which we cannot always control. Where is the door that can resist sin s continuing encroachments? Where is the Savior of mankind and the world as a whole? Over 2000 years ago, an angel appeared to shepherds keeping watch over their fields by night (Lu 2:8) with these joyful tidings: For unto you is born this day, in the city of David, a Savior, who is Christ the Lord (Lu 2:11). The very God, our Maker who created us from the dust of the earth and sustains us by the light emanating from his presence, reached into our sin-sick world to save us from the disorder pervading it. He did not come clothed in the greatness of his being that we should be overcome by our corruptions, but he came in the weakness of our nature that we would identify with his humanity; and learn that the weakness of God is greater than the strength of all mankind. Pastor s Corner continued on next page
2 (Pastor s Corner continued) Because our Savior took our flesh, he endured the limitation, privations and disorders of our nature. He suffered sorrow, betrayal, temptations, and pain of body, hunger, thirst, and fatigue, even more than man can suffer (Mos 1:100). Despite those difficulties, he gave no heed unto them (D&C 17:5b), but completed his heavenly Father s will. He told the ancient Americans, I am the light and the life of the world, and I have drunk out of that bitter cup which the Father hath given me, and have glorified the Father in taking upon me the sins of the world (3 N 5:12). The disorder sown into our world ravaged its full fury on our Savior and failed to overcome him. Although he died on Calvary s cruel cross, death failed to hold him. He burst from the grave having swallowed up the disorder that pierced his hands and feet and speared his side. Like the door of a sheepfold, Jesus swallowed up sin s encroachments for the sake of his flock nestled within his refuge. Jesus victory over death did not eradicate sin and disorder from our environment. Our universe will still end. Heaven and earth will still pass away. Instead, Jesus death and resurrection opened the door to heaven. Paul expresses it this way: Christ Jesus... hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us (Eph 2:13-14). When the heavens and earth of our world collapses into the nothingness from which it was created, the elements, energy and information that it contains will survive in the dimension of God s eternal presence. Those residing in the Savior s kingdom will find themselves resurrected into the kingdom of heaven in celestial glory. While disorder thrives in this world, it will not taint the world to come. We have opportunity to inherit that holy abode. Our Savior gives us that opportunity as his best gift. Christmas time is a wonderful occasion that is firmly engraved on our culture to reverently recognize the gift and grace of God and his boundless love as manifest in the birth of Jesus, the holy Father s only begotten Son and Savior of the world. Thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Cor 15:57).
