1 T h e A r t i o s H o m e C o m p a n i o n S e r i e s T e a c h e r O v e r v i e w The Biblical account of man includes the narrative of Cain, Abel and their descendants. This part of history cannot be studied without recognizing that God does require payment for sin. Per God s requirements, this was to include a blood sacrifice, a requirement that Cain did not obey. Jealousy over his brother Abel s accepted sacrifice led to the first murder and banishment of Cain from his family. The human race continued to grow and soon men developed specific skills as seen in the individuals of Jabal, Jubal and Tubalcain. The sacrifices of Cain and Abel Reading and Assignments Based on your student s age and ability, the reading in this unit may be read aloud to the student and journaling and notebook pages may be completed orally. Likewise, other assignments can be done with an appropriate combination of independent and guided study. In this unit, students will: Complete four lessons in which they will learn about Cain and Abel, the descendants of Cain, the development of society, and man s sinful nature. Define vocabulary words. 2 Leading Ideas One of God s institutions found in the early chapters of Genesis is the institution of marriage. And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; and the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. Genesis 2:21-24 Man is fallen and in need of a Savior. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Romans 3:23 Sin requires death. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23 God requires obedience to His commands. And Samuel said, Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams. I Samuel 15:22 The shedding of blood is required for the forgiveness of sin. Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins. Hebrews 9:22 Jealousy is sin. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper? 10 And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground. 11 And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand; 12 When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth. 13 And Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear. 14 Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me. 15 And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him. 16 And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden. Page 33

Adapted for Elementary School from the book: Ancient States and Empires by John Lord Cain and Abel Cain and Abel The first noteworthy conflict took place between Cain, the planter, and Abel, the shepherd the representatives of two great divisions of the human family in the early ages. Cain killed Abel because the offering of the latter was preferred to that of the former. The virtue of Abel was faith. The sin of Cain was jealousy, pride, resentment, and despair. The punishment of Cain was expulsion from his father s house, the further curse of the land for him, and the hatred of the human family. He relinquished his occupation, became a wanderer, and scratched out a precarious living while his descendants invented arts and built cities. The Descendants of Cain Eve bear another son Seth, among whose descendants the worship of God was preserved for a long time. But the descendants of Seth intermarried finally with the descendants of Cain, from whom sprang a race of lawless men, so that the earth was filled with violence. The material civilization which the descendants of Cain introduced did not preserve them from moral degeneracy. So great was the increasing wickedness with the growth of the race that the Lord regretted that he had made man, and he resolved to destroy the whole race with the exception of one religious family and change the whole surface of the earth by a mighty flood, which would destroy all animals and birds of the air, and all the antediluvian works of man.
