1 2 From the arranger The gospels record esus telling His folloers that If anyone ould come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follo Me (Mark 8: 3) I onder hat those hearing these ords ere thinking as He challenged them in this ay Certainly they ere aare that execution on a cross as commonplace in their orld for the vilest of criminals Many had, no dout, even itnessed such criminals carrying their on cross, as as the Roman custom, as they made their painful trek to the crucifixion location But those hearing Christ ould not have understood the eight of meaning these ords carried as esus as anticipating His on experience of cross-earing hich as soon to come on the road to Calvary The road to Calvary is not a pretty one The terrain is rugged Those standing along the road are often foes, not friends Even the ord Calvary (Latin for skull ) implies desolation and aandonment When esus reached the destination ith His cross, hat had already een a rugged ourney only got orse For it as here that His life as taken from Him y ruthless and selfish people ho could not emrace the teachings of this humle Teacher So hy as esus telling His folloers and us, for that matter that a significant part of our discipleship as to take up our on cross and follo Him I m not sure I fully kno the anser to my on question But I think in some ays it may have to do ith the fact that esus kne our life s ourney ould not e easy He kne there ould e times e ould feel reected and alone; that the family memer, the teacher, the oss, or the neighor ould not see things the ay e did I think esus kne there ould e times in our life that e ould feel aandoned y God even as He did on the cross (Matthe 27:6) The challenge to take up our cross seems to e a clarion call to e faithful in all of the seasons of life It is an invitation to find courage for today and hope for tomorro even hen our family, employment, or health scenarios look leak at est And it is a challenge to e steadfast to the end, at hich time the plan of God ill ultimately e fulfilled There can e no victories ithout the heat of attle There can e no triumphal resurrection day ithout navigating the rugged road to Calvary I pray that you ill find inspiration and encouragement in these hymn settings hich again remind us that e are called to carry the cross in the ourney of faith a ourney that leads us to Calvary and ultimately to an empty tom!
