8 106 11_rE prvleged to clam the appellaton "Technology" as purely our own THE TECH, therefore, urges our students, alumn, and professors to adopt ths ttle, and to make t symbolcal of the Massachusetts nsttute of Technology OME half dozen duplcate pettons have been crculatng for several days n the varous classes, urgng the Faculty to suspend the exercses of the college upon the Saturday mmedately precedng Chrstmas Day, and the Tuesday followng Not a man refused to sgn t; and ths fact, together wth the rapdty wth whch the pettons crculated, show the sentments of the students n the matter Thanksgvng s a typcal New England festval, but the Chrstmas season s far dearer to the average Amercan The recess requested would enable most of the students to jon the famly crcle at a tme when every absence s deeply regretted; so t seems that the Chrstmas vacaton should be at least as extended as that n November Many men wll cut anyway, and the work of the two days n queston would ndeed be "most unsatsfactory even f requred" THE TECH- adds ts plea to that of the students for the addtonal two days of freedom, feelng that all wll work the harder n consequence (OMMUNGA'llONS The Edtors do not h/old themselves responsble for opfnons exlbresscd by correspondents To THE EDrORS OF THE T1ECH:- Durng the Thanksgvng recess a sgn was put up on the Cage sgnfyng the hours at whch the coat room connected therewth s open Ths had to be done, because a good many of the newer men thought that Mss Bassett could attend at the coat room all day, wthout any luncheon Nevertheless, t s frequently necessary to have access to the coat room whle Mss Bassett s at lunch; and t would seem well to have an assstant wat at the coat room durng the tme n whch t at present remans closed E A B To THE EDTORS OF THE TECH: cannot magne that as far as hs own feelngs go a member of the Faculty s lkely to care whether the students touch ther hats to hm or not The fant satsfacton whch may be supposed to come from that act of respect would soon gve place to a lttle sense of wearness at an act whch was purely ceremonal There s, however, another sde to the matter, and personally do not see the students pass members of the Faculty wth untouched hats wthout a feelng of regret for the student hmself The custom of salutng a member of the Faculty s based on the recognton of the fact that he represents the college, and that offcally he stands for that thng whch men through the ages have unted n regardng as worthy of honor-learnng t s n recognton of the fact that every student gets from the college more than he can repay, more than money could repay; and that t s becomng that he should be ready n manly frankness and loyalty to hmself and to the truth to acknowledge ths by salutng the men who represent the nsttuton t s n recognton, also, of the fact that any teacher who s worthy of the name s more than a mere bargan maker, who gves what he s pad for; that he s one who gves freely, n so far as s n hs powver, for the love of dffusng knowledge, and for the pleasure of helpng those under hm t s not as an ndvdual that a member of the Faculty should be saluted, but as the representatve of an dea; and to me t seems a pty that a student should not feel hmself mpelled to salute the men who are the representatves of ths dea and of the benefcence whch makes t possble for hmn to equp hmself for hs lfe work t s purely on the prncple of noblesse oblge that wvoulcl have a student touch hs cap,-on the ground that he respects hmself too much not to gve honor where honor s due The queston of the ndvdual professor has, of course, nothng to do wth ths t s to what he represents that the salute s rendered n a techncal school, where the practcal sde of lfe s always emphaszed, there s constant danger that the fner and more subtle sde of lfe wll not be proportonately developed so that a harmonous man shall be the result t s on ths account that t seems to me to be worth whle to nsst upon ths pont t chances that have never heard a member of the Faculty to whch belong express any opnon whatever on the subject of touchng the hat, so that clam to represent no vews save my own trust that "C" wll pardon me f say that t does not seem to me that he

9 K A 4~p A;; 4--c tc*r -(11E E 107 THE TECH 1O has thought ths matter out qute to the end He erous formatons, and the party then pushed calls for a halt n the practce because t "lessens the on to Trenton Falls, to study the Trenton self-respect of the student"; whle to me the logcal lmestone At Watervlle, whch furnshed concluson from the facts of the case s that the custom should be encouraged, because f rghtly understood t cannot but ncrease the student's respect for hmself " C" s rght n sayng that the student n the salute pays "homage to the occupaton, and not to the ndvdual "; but has he consdered the dfference between an occupaton whch s mere self-seekng, and one whch s worthy of honor because t cannot be properly or successfully followed wthout self-sacrfce, generosty, and noblty of purpose? ONE OF THE FACULTY TO THE EDTORS OF THE TECH:- Wth some surprse notced a letter n your last ssue sgned "C," callng attenton to the fact that students remove ther hats to ther professors Far from savorng to me of servlty, never magned that any student dd otherwse than thus salute hs professor when he met hm am sorry to offend Mr C's "nborn Amercan sentment of equalty," but certanly do consder that the students occupy a poston nferor to that of the Faculty t s true that the tmes have changed very much snce Paul sat " at the feet of Gamalel" ; but surely the fact that we come here to learn from these gentlemen, enttles them to st upon slghtly rased platforms But Mr C asks, "Who of us would thnk of payng a lke trbute to the successful down-town merchant?" hope there are a great many amongst us who thus salute the older gentlemen of our acquantance thnk, however, that the poston of professor n the nsttuton n whch we are undergraduates demands ths mark of respect from us, even more mperatvely than does the person occupyng that poston T C D Summer Feld Work n Paleontology THE department of geology consderably ncreased ts collecton of fossls for laboratory work n paleontology by feld work done n the State of New York last summer n June feld work began at Howe;s Cave, New York, where there s a good example of an underground water channel Two days were spent at Schohare collectng fossls from the lower Helderberg, Orskany, and Cornf- work for several days, Mr F W Putnam, a former student of the nsttute, who deserves the thanks of all Tech :nen for hs cordal hosptalty to the vstors, conducted the party Many valuable specmens were obtaned from Hudson Rver, Oneda, Medna, Clnton, Lower Helderberg, Orskany, Cornferous, and Marcellus formatons The route was next by way of Syracuse to Ludlowvlle, thaca, and Cayuga Lake, n whch country the party collected many fossls from the dfferent dvsons of the Devonan Some photographs of the fnely developed jont structure of thaca were obtaned, and the youthful topography of the Fnger Lakes proved an nterestng study At Watkns Glen some fne potholes were observed Near the Genesee a fne secton of Sluran from the Medna up to the Nagara was seen The depost of calcareous tufa at Mumford was of exceptonal nterest, n that t has proved to be a servceable buldng stone, although t hlas a very porous texture At Warsaw the party enjoyed the unque luxury of bathng n fossl sea water,-a nearly saturated soluton of salt, whch has been rased from a depth of two thousand feet At Portage Mr Grabau worked up a valuable paper provng that the preglacal course of the Genesse n ths secton was west of the present rver, and through the valley n whch Warsaw s now stuated n the vcnty of Buffalo were collected Hamlton fossls at Eghteen Mle Creek, Nagara fossls from the gorge of the Nagara Rver, and fossls of the Cornferous lmestone from Wllamsvlle The party then broke up; but two members contnued the work, and collected Marcellus fossls at Avon, fossls from Upper Hamlton, at Moscow, shallow water fossls of the Hamlton at Pratt's Falls, fossls of the Cornferous and Orskany at Auburn, and good fossls from Seneca lmestone at Oak's Corners

"No; just wanted to see where he burns hs ol," contnued the far vstor " Well, then, lght out! " added the busness manager, closng the door wth a jar that shattered the unpanted glass panel "That's always the way wth those bloomng Freshmen," sad the exchange edtor; " now we'll have to sell at least a dozen TECHS to pay for that burst of eloquence" "That's no Freshman," sad the busness manager, scornfully; "he s the Sophomore who asked the footb)all captan what he was good for n an athletc way" "That's just what sad," exclamed the exchange ccltor, hedgng; "he s a fresh man, and should be sat clown on" "Refer hm to the Lounger, then," sad the busness manager, ndfferently twrlng a char on hs fnger; "he's not my mutton" "The meetng wll come to order," nterrupted the edtor n chef, bangng on the table wth a T square "\What's the news for next week?" "New grl n the lunch room," sad a Senor edtor, who s especally fond of ths restng place "Come off," broke n the Secretary; "she's not lew W1hy, 've seen her down at the Bjou!" "Ah that remnds us!" exclamed the two new edltors; "the French Crcle has secured M Bernard for soup n the comng play" "Serves hm rght," sad the athletc edtor,--"only they should have made t hash" "What next?" demanded the edtor n chef, anxously Hawthorne's babes are now n swaddlng clothes," vlunteered the Lounger, mournfully " Oh well, cheer up," sad the charman; "how about the cross-country?" "Runnng smoothly," sad the athletc edtor n a more pleasant tone "Anythng else?" asked the charman, absentmndedly pckng out a tune for the Banjo Club on the T square "Jump on Course X for such puny wcks n the lbrary," suggested the lterary edtor " Another case of lght out," murmured the exchange edtor, hungrly lookng at hs watch "Move we adjourn!" exclamed the secretary, on the spur of the moment "Those n favor of adjournng wll adjourn," sad the charman; and n a trce the Lounger and the nk bottle held down the table n soltude And the world moves on There s a lttle event that deserves to be chroncled n the annals of nsttute hstory by the Lounger's faulty pen On a cold, frosty mornng n the early fall, when the shrubbery frst felt the cruel bte of Jack Frost, before the warm sun of the mornng had lured the pgeons from ther sanctmonous homes behnd the louvers of Trnty, our worthy jantor of the archtects' manson was roused from hs blssful slumbers by the furous rngng of the nght bell through the slent hallways Slowly and wearly he arose f-om hs cot, wth many a yawn and backward look, tll, aded by the few strugglng rays of gray lght, whch marked for hm the dawn of another day of mngled tol and talk, he made hs careful way toward the vestbule Before the door stood an mpatent student, wth hands thrust deeply nto trousers' pockets, and wth shoulders rased to ears, restlessly shftng hs weght from one foot to another and kckng the heel of one boot wth the toe of the other, whle round about hm, nppng nose and ears, gambolled the chllng mornng atmosphere Hs beamng glance greeted the jantor's drowsy sensbltes through the dusty pane, and hs eager face, though showng lnes of deep care and thought,-of struggle and self-denal, perhaps,-stll glowed wth noble determnaton wth whch naught but the nfnte mght cope "What s wanted?" demanded the wonderng jantor, n hs customary sweet voce " want to work on my order plate," was the meek but nsprng reply; and leavng the jantor too amazed for utterance, the youth scampered eagerly upward to hs beloved task 'Ts thus the grnd turns merrly on; yet n statng ths tale told by a man whom he has seen, the Lounger only fears lest he may have suggested evl and useless thoughts to other grnds wth beamng faces l
