Location: Vault Language: English Biographical Sketch The following collection concerns the Belknap, Eddy, and Fiske families. Please consult the biographical sketches for a more detailed outline of their genealogy. Names appearing in bold appear in the collection. EDDY Family Major Jonas Eddy Jr. ( ) was appointed to Captain of the 5 th Massachusetts regiment in 1815 and to the rank of Major in He married Betsy (Parker) Eddy and had four children. Surviving materials from his daughter Elizabeth Elvira Eddy (1821-), who married James M. Belknap ( ), also appear in this collection. According to federal census records, Major Eddy s youngest son, Jonas R. Eddy ( ) spent most of his life in poor houses, starting as early as Presumably mentally or physically disabled, a petition was made near the end of Eddy s life to the town of Oxford, Massachusetts for his residence there. Sent by his brother-in-law James M. Belknap on Eddy s behalf, the petition included a $1,500 pledge to the town and assurance that Eddy would not be 1

2 a burden to the public. After Belknap s death in 1891, communication concerning his welfare was sent to his niece, Miss Mary C. Plimpton. According to the Office of Overseers of the Poor in Oxford, Jonas R. Eddy was buried with his sister Elizabeth Elvira and her husband James M. Eddy (June 6, 1829 July 31, 1899) - Reuben Eddy (October 20, 1781-) - Rufus Eddy (October 20, 1781-) - Lucy Eddy (November 11, 1785-) FISKE Family The majority of correspondence found in this collection relates to Daniel Fiske (1748- ), his wife Elizabeth Morse Fiske (April 29, ), and their children. Daniel and Elizabeth M. Fiske were married on December 25, 1781 and had nine children who lived to adulthood. In order of birth, they were Moses Fiske ( ), Deliverance Fiske ( ), Daniel Fiske (1786-), Silas Fiske (1788-), Lydia Fiske ( ), John Fiske (1791-), Joshua Fiske ( ), Lois Fiske ( ), and Lucy Fiske (1799-). Deliverance (Fiske) Belknap married Penuel Belknap, son of Sarah Belknap, connecting the Belknap and Fiske families. A large portion of correspondence concerns the three youngest Fiske daughters, Lydia, Lois, and Lucy. Both the Fiskes and Belknaps were prominent families in the Sturbridge area. Belknap ( ) and Sarah Stacy Belknap ( ), married Deliverance Fiske on June 8, They had eight adult children, most of who married and resided in the Massachusetts area. Correspondence is mostly addressed to Penuel and Deliverance, but occasionally several siblings were addressed throughout the text, presumably passed between households. Their eldest daughter Sarah Belknap married back into the Fiske family. Her husband, Henry Fiske ( ), is the creator of the majority of the account books in this collection. Their daughter, Caroline (Fiske) Hodges ( ), also appears in this collection penning letters to her grandmother, Deliverance. The majority of financial papers pertain to Major Jonas Eddy, Jr. Correspondence between Daniel Fiske, his wife Elizabeth M. Fiske and their children serves as the bulk of this collection.
