St. Joseph Knights of Columbus, Fr. Werner Council 7057 December 2013 Grand Knight Message The St. Cloud Diocese was blessed with the appointment of Bishop Donald Kettler as our new Bishop.

As you may know, we have started up our monthly Knights of Columbus breakfasts again in the new Heritage Hall. Our next breakfast will be on Sunday, December 1, 2013.

1 St. Joseph Knights of Columbus, Fr. Werner Council 7057 December 2013 Grand Knight Message The St. Cloud Diocese was blessed with the appointment of Bishop Donald Kettler as our new Bishop. Please pray that he will be a strong and faithful leader of our Diocese, and that he will lead us all closer to Christ. As you may know, we have started up our monthly Knights of Columbus breakfasts again in the new Heritage Hall. Our next breakfast will be on Sunday, December 1, If you are contacted to help work for this one, or any other future breakfast, please help us out, as this is a very good community event. It is a chance for our Council to be visible in the community, and get the word out about what it means to be a member of the Knights of Columbus. Remember that all members should be actively trying to recruit new members into the Knights of Columbus. If you know someone that would be a good Knight, go ahead and ask them to join. Sometimes, all people need is to be invited. Go ahead and ask them. Lastly, please join us at our meeting on the second Monday of each month. Rosary is at 7:15 pm and the meeting starts at 7:30 pm. Mark Berg-Arnold, Grand Knight KC Breakfast Sunday, December 1! Mark Berg-Arnold Plan to attend our KC Parish breakfast in December. Bring your family to try our new menu including pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs, hash browns, caramel rolls and beverages. The all-you-can-eat breakfast will held from 8 am to noon in Heritage Hall. The cost is just $7 for adults and $3 for children ages There is no charge for children 5 and under. District Deputy Message My Brother Knights and Ladies: As Advent is here and Christmas soon to come I ask all of you, when you are out and about and someone wishes you happy holidays because they have to please respond to them MERRY CHRISTMAS. As Knights and Christians we should be reminding people to KEEP CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS; after all this season is the celebration of the birth of JESUS. Remember the Family and Knight of the Month... these are easy to run programs and can make a big difference for a brother Knight and a family. 2 Chaplain s Message Dear Members of the St. Joseph Knights of Columbus: With you I want to offer my tremendous gratitude to the Knights councils throughout the United States and particularly to the Saint Joseph Council. The Knights Fr. Jerome Tupa have taken to heart the and Buster gospel admonition To love your neighbor, To care for the widow and the orphan and the many other Beatitudes of our Lord urging us to be a sign to the world of Christ s love. Here in St. Joseph your work has brought needed help to our children seeking a Catholic education. Without your help the cost of our schooling would be prohibitive. As a council you give a wonderful witness to the men and women of the parish. There is one advice that I would give; recruit some new young members. Without the younger men and women involved, the heavy work of volunteering for Brat and hamburger sales, parish breakfasts, and the other unseen work that you offer to us will slowly disappear. I encourage young families to join the council to keep it strong and growing. So this is a Thanksgiving blessing to all of you who pray and work using the model of Saint Benedict s Rule. If you have men interested in joining our great council, please call me with names so they can be notified of the various dates. Arrangements can then be made to take them to the ceremony. We have a quota of 16 new members by June 20, Recruitment is something we all need to work on. As recruitment director, I can t talk to every man in this parish who is not currently a member; I need your help. If you are uncomfortable talking to someone about joining, call me with their name and number. Welcome Leonard Vossen and Dean Budde! We welcome two men and their families who transferred into our council in November. They are Leonard Vossen from St. Joseph, and Dean Budde from Avon. Enter through the East door. Volunteer Opportunity: Help Patients at the VA Hospital Mass Our council is asked to supply help to push patients in wheelchairs from their rooms to Mass on Sundays. This is something that area Knights have been doing with pride for many years. If you can give some of your time for this great program, call John Stang at to offer your services. KC Breakfast Recap We had a good crowd for our first breakfast after a year off. We served 269 people and had a $400 profit after expenses were paid. Our menu items went over well with many positive comments. We will be advertising more for the next breakfast and hope for even better results. Thanks to all who helped and came to eat. Breakfast committee Burger Sale Fundraiser Report We made a profit of $9,000 during this season s burger sales. I am presenting the council with a check for $8,000. I am keeping $1,000 in the account for startup money for next season. Thanks to everyone who worked at the sales; plan to help again next year. Our council is looking for someone to be our PR person. Duties include the following: Send information to the Newsleader, submit articles for our parish bulletin, represent our council on the St. Cloud area PR committee, and, whatever else you think of to get our name out there. Call Deputy Grand Knight Rick Schmit at to offer your time and talent. Dues Notices Dues notices will be going out in December along with raffle tickets for you to return. Read the enclosed cover letter in the envelope for instructions. Please return your dues payment and the raffle tickets ASAP so we don t have to send you a second notice. This is a great way to find out what other KC events are going on in the area. Each council in the area has its own page as well. You can click on the different councils and see what they are doing, and what fund raiser meals they are hosting so you can attend for a night out. 5 How Vivat Jesu Became the KC Motto We learn this phrase during the lesson of the 2nd degree ceremony. When the late Supreme Chaplain Bishop Charles Greco was a seminarian he was deeply moved while reading the story of St. Bernadine of Siena. He adopted the saint s favorite prayer May Jesus live in its Latin form Vivat Jesu to use as the motto for his life and priesthood. When he became Bishop of Alexandria, LA in 1946, Bishop Greco chose the same phrase as his Episcopal motto. Our past Supreme Knight, Virgil Dechant, thought our order ought to be devoted to the name of Jesus and chose Bishop Greco s motto Vivat Jesu as a greeting. The response is Semper, meaning always. By its use the Knights help bring back the love and devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus. Brother Leon Perret (from Charles Pasquale Greco Charles Pasquale Greco (October 29, 1894 January 20, 1987) was an American Prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He served as Bishop of Alexandria in Louisiana from 1946 to Charles Greco was born in Rodney, Mississippi to Frank and Carmela (nee Testa) Greco. He attended St. Joseph Seminary in Covington, Louisiana before studying at the American College at Louvain in Belgium and the University of Fribourg in Switzerland. He was ordained to the priesthood by Archbishop John Shaw on July 25, He served as vicar general of the Archdiocese of New Orleans and pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes Church. On January 15, 1946 Greco was appointed the sixth Bishop of Alexandria by Pope Pius XII. He received his Episcopal consecration the following February 25 from Archbishop Joseph Rummel. During his tenure he established 33 parishes, over 135 churches and chapels, 100 convents and rectories, and 7 healthcare facilities. He also founded St. Mary s Residential Training School in Clarks (later relocated in Alexandria) and Holy Angels School for Retarded Children in Shreveport. He attended all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council between 1962 and Bishop Greco was also the first Supreme Chaplain of the Knights of Columbus. After 27 years as bishop Greco resigned on May 10, He died at the age of 92. We praise you for the light of Israel: the Law, the Prophets and the wisdom of the Scriptures. We praise you for Jesus Christ your Son, the true Light of the world, the Light which no darkness can overcome. He is Emmanuel, God-with-us, the Prince of Peace who saved the world from darkness and brought humanity into the peace of everlasting Light. We praise you for Mary, who held your Son in her loving arms, and who was given to us as a Mother at the foot of the Cross. She is the New Eve, leading all her children into the Light of Joy who is her Son, Jesus. We praise you for the gift of faith, given to us at Baptism, which enlightens our minds to know and accept the Gospel of Truth and Life.
