1 The Villager February 1, 2018 Reflecting on the Elder Retreat From dinnertime Friday through mid afternoon on Saturday, the elders gathered for good fellowship over meals and making chocolate chip cookies; worship; evaluating 2017; and planning for We also passed a budget and spent a lot of time considering what it means to be a good neighbor! Here are a few highlights: We evaluated our church based on three questions offered by General Presbyter Ed Thompson: Who are we? Who are our neighbors? And What is God calling us to do? We studied The Art of Neighboring by Jay Pathak and Dave Runyon, which prompted us to consider VC s origin story as a church planted at the corner of 39th and Venable to be a neighborhood church and whether we really know our neighbors. Since the answer was not really, we took 22 bags of cookies out and visited with our neighbors. We met some interesting people and (hopefully) planted some seeds for future relationships. We passed a budget that will allow us to continue the ministries we believe God is calling us to carry out among our neighbors. (see page 2 for more details) And we dreamed a little (about things we think God might be drawing us toward). We ll talk more about these dreams over the coming months and see where the Spirit leads us, but here is a sampling: build on the arts in worship experience hosting traveling exhibits for the community or invite artists to help us reflect on the stations of the cross ; build a Habitat House with other Kanawha City churches; have a fill-a-pew Sunday; and work with KPCC on the ACES program at Chamberlin elementary by providing adult volunteers. It was a great time! (A reflection of a faithful, creative, talented, hardworking group of elders!) Worship Notes You are invited to prepare for worship during February by reflecting on these scriptures: Feb. 4 Mark 1:21-28 Feb. 11 Transfiguration Sunday Mark 9:2-10 Feb. 18 First Sunday in Lent Mark 1:9-15 Feb. 28 Mark 8:31-38 Copies of Todd s sermon will be available in the Narthex in case you want to share it with a friend or reread a portion you missed. Text and audio are also available on the church s web-page: The Souper Bowl of Caring was originally founded by a Presbyterian church youth group. Even though the movement has since expanded from the faith community to many types of participating groups, it continues to be fueled by people coming together to worship and make a difference in their community. Nationally $10.5 million was raised in At our church, the youth will be ready on February 4th to receive your gifts of cans or cash. You can even pick the Eagles or Patriots to support! All we collect will go to Common Grounds to help their efforts to feed our hungry neighbors. Please give generously! We will celebrate Ash Wednesday on February 14th (yes, that s Valentine s Day) at the Charleston Town Center Mall from 11:30-1:00. There will be a service of reflection at 7:00 PM at the church. Please plan to come! Village Chapel Presbyterian Church 3818 Venable Avenue, SE Charleston, WV Villager 2/1/2018 p.1

Income $1, $1, Total $ $5, Congregational meeting Sunday, Feb. 11th The Session called for a congregational meeting to present the 2018 budget, share 2017 Ministry Team reports, and vote on (slight) changes to the terms of the pastor s call. The budget was based on requests from the MTs (including a recommendation for cost-of-living increases for the staff and pastor) and projections of income based on 2018 pledges and data from While there is a gap between the projected income and expenses, the Session decided to go forward based on past history. (In 2017 we received $13,000 more than we expected and spent $10,000 less than we had budgeted!) Come on the 11th to hear all the details. Congratulations to Kate and Isaac Forman on the birth of their baby girl! Vera Nicole Forman was born Saturday, January 27th, coming into this world at 7lbs. 10 oz. and inches! 3 LENT BEGINS WEDNESDAY, Feb. 14. Lenten season worship series We had a great meeting and the group decided that the theme will be Intense Lent! Each Sunday will reflect the theme as follows: 2/18 An intense beginning Mk 1:9-15 2/25 An intense choice Mk 8: /4 An intense reaction Jn 2: /11 An intense conversation Jn 3: /18 An intense sacrifice Jn 12: /25 An intense excitement Mk 11:1-11 If you d like to help us flesh out the theme, please contact Todd or Amy. Lenten Study B o d y & S o u l Mondays, Feb March 26, 7 PM Comfort. Misery. Salvation. Gratitude. Spirit. Prayer. We live in a day and age when we hunger for a clear and tender understanding of what it means to say, I am not my own, but belong body and soul, in life and in death to my faithful savior, Jesus Christ. In the midst of all the anxieties of contemporary life, we will find no insight more valuable than what we can discover in our faith tradition. Facilitated by Todd Wright and Amy Parker. Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner Tuesday, February 6 PM Presbytery of West Virginia s Festival of Faith Saturday, April 7, 2018 First Presbyterian Church, Charleston, WV Keynote Speaker: Jan Edmiston General Assembly Co-Moderator Keynote: The State of the PC(USA): The Good, the Bad, the Ugly Workshop: Culture Eats Strategy for Breakfast Some of the Other Festival of Faith Workshops: Where Your Mission Dollars Go Welcoming: The Joy of Inclusion Is It I, Lord? Make room for the bread and cup. Make room for God. Water refund? This week we received a notice at the church of a proposed settlement in response to the water crisis of January You probably did too. It promised a windfall for each household, starting at $550. Last night the Session agreed to tithe the portion the church will receive as a non-profit business (roughly $1900) to Common Grounds. 10% = $190 for them. Would you be willing to tithe your settlement to them too? Villager 2/1/2018 p. 3

5 Please remember the following people in your prayers on these dates: February 1 Gerald Nottingham 2 Harriet Nottingham 3 Joanie Panger 4 Michael Panger 5 Alex Panger 6 Peyton Panger 7 Don Parker 8 Amy Parker 9 Tory Parker 10 David Parks 11 Heather Parks 12 Kristen Parks 13 Katie Parks 14 Carolyn Perrine 15 Whitney Perrine An important part of our caring for each other is the Prayer Chain. You can participate by or phone. Betsy White (betsywhite06@yahoo.com) is the contact and Mary Lee Jung ( ) is the phone contact. You may also contact Mary Howard in the church office ( or Mary@vcpresby.org) She will direct your prayer request to Betsy and Mary Lee. If you would like to be added to the Prayer Chain, please contact Mary Howard. Sunday Morning Cards for Members Don t forget to check the prayer display in the fellowship hall each week! There are cards that need to be signed for those members and friends who are currently dealing with illness, grieving, homebound, celebrations, thank you, or other issues. You may also add a card for others and we will take care of the addressing and mailing. Make sure that it is clear who the card is for (just add their name to the envelope). I have a plant on my desk that came with clear instruction on how to nurture it optimum sunlight, water, and temperature. Wouldn t it be nice to have similar information to help us nurture our own faith or that of our children or grandchildren? Well, the presbytery of WV is providing weekly ideas for nurturing faith. Here are this months: February 4: This week show the care and compassion Jesus demonstrated by sharing a smile, your seat on a bus, a hug, or maybe a hot meal with a stranger or a neighbor. This may be just what they need to make their day. February 11: Our transformation may not be as dramatic as Jesus, but take time this week to transform something in your life. Consider improving your prayer life, changing your attitude, or maybe just smiling more often. Toilet Paper Donations Needed! As part of Village Chapel s Ministry to Common Grounds, we donate toilet paper for those less fortunate. The Presbyterian Women have set the second Sunday of every month the official donation Sunday for toilet paper. You can just bring your donation with you to Church and place it in the specified area at the back of the Sanctuary. Thank you in advance for you generosity! Villager 2/1/2018 p. 5
