1 JUNE 2018 Dear Friends, The month of June is here, and with it, the official arrival of summer. Technically, June 21 st is the summer solstice, the longest day of the year when the sun is farther North than at any other time. The summer season brings with it different rhythms for students, for families, and for the church. As you plan to enjoy this time of year, I want to invite you to intentionally weave in specific ways to attend to your spiritual health and growth. Carve out time to enjoy nature and experience the joy of Sabbath rest and renewal. Remember that playfulness should not just be a part of life in your family, but it is also critical in developing greater intimacy with God. Give yourself permission to experiment with different ways of attending to your prayer and devotional life. Take some time to get your hands dirty and your feet moving in a new act of service to God and neighbor. As we journey through this season together, it is also important to set aside time each week for worship, whether you are spending the Lord s Day here at home or you find yourself traveling for work or recreation. Here at FUMC, we are also excited about some upcoming summer series and activities that we hope you will participate in. Many are highlighted in this issue of The First Methogram. During the month of June, I invite you to a new, four-sermon series on The Prophet Samuel: Godly Leadership in Changing Times. June 3: Speak Lord, Your Servant Is Listening June 10: Give Us a King June 17: I Will Show You What to Do June 24: May the Lord Be with You I also want to invite you to pray for our North Carolina Annual Conference, which will be held in Greenville, NC from June at the Greenville Convention Center with some pre-conference events to be held on Wednesday, June 13 th. This year, I will be attending with my wife (currently our Corridor District Lay Leader) and Eric Crissman, our church s lay member to Annual Conference. To find out more about the agenda, speakers, live streaming, and special worship services, go to ac2018/. In addition, you may also want to download the AC 2018 app to your mobile device or phone. Take some time to look through the rest of this newsletter and discover other ways you and your family can worship, connect, serve, and give this June and throughout the rest of these summer months before us. Let me leave you with this hymn that celebrates the seasons: All things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small, All things wise and wonderful; the Lord God made them all. The cold wind in the winter, the pleasant summer sun, The ripe fruits in the garden; God made them every one. (UMH #147) Worshipping, Connecting, Serving, and Giving with you, Pastor Kevin FUMC-Graham 303 North Main Street Graham, NC / Pastor G. 6 WATCH D.O.G.S. Are Coming! WATCH OUT! WATCH D.O.G.S. are coming to South Graham Elementary for the school year! WATCH D.O.G.S. (Dads Of Great Students) is an educational initiative that seeks to promote father involvement in the school day. Dads are encouraged to come to school with their child for a day, offering an opportunity to observe and participate in their child s learning process. The presence of positive role models is crucial for all students and sends a positive message that education is important. Having dads on duty provides another set of eyes and ears to enhance school security and prevent bullying. For those students without a father figure in the home, male volunteers become surrogate dads for the day, offering a wonderful opportunity to foster positive male interaction. WATCH D.O.G.S. is a national program started in 1998 with tremendous success across the country. The United Methodist Church is encouraging this program as part of the C4C (Congregations for Children) initiative. This fall, FUMCG will be joining with South Graham to bring this program to the school. Charlie Carrico is leading this effort on behalf of our church and partnering with a male teacher and the administrative staff to launch the program. You will be hearing more from Charlie Carrico about how our congregation can support this awesome initiative. Please contact Charlie at chcarric@gmail.com If you would like more detailed information about how you can be involved in this ministry. Most of all, pray for the success of the WATCH D.O.G.S. Program as the planning phase continues. C4C.FUMCG@SouthGraham making a difference for the children of our community! Give United Methodist Women Mission Focus for JUNE Women s Center NEEDED: 1. Individual juice boxes 2. Toilet paper Leave donations in the church office (Rm. 113), or give directly to Jeanne Owen. Help One of Our Scouts Go to Camp This Summer We have six scouts who are having trouble getting the funds to go to camp this summer. The Council has cut funds in half, so we are asking if there are any church members who would be willing to help out by donating $30/Scout. Please make checks out to Pack 41.
