Most genealogists--but by no means all--place John Jr. an d Mindwell as her parents because Northampton records show no births in this fa mily between 1693, when a son John was born, and 1698, when a daughter Esther w as born. Mary is given a birth year of 1695 or 1696 and inserted into this fam ily line. This seeming arbitrariness might indicate that her grandparentage (L ieut. John Lyman and Dorcas Plumb) is also suspect, and that may very well be, but that the immigrant ancestor, Richard Lyman, and his wife, Sarah Osborne, we re her great-grandparents there can be no doubt: Richard and Sarah's three son s (Richard, Lieut. John, and Robert) were the progenitors of all males and fema les in Northampton named Lyman in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centurie s. 9 Of Enfield, Conn. In 1745 Samuel Dwight was the member from Enfield, Massachusetts, in the House of Representatives of the Massachusetts General Court. Enfield became part of Connecticut in Samuel Dwight was also a justice of the peace, a captain in the militia, a trader, and a farmer. He lived for a time in the Connecticut towns of Middletown, Somers, and Suffield.
