Is your glass half full or half empty? Do you make difficulties out of your opportunities, or opportunities out of your difficulties? Are you the kind that complains about the noise when o p portunity knocks? Do you claim to be an optimist who doubts that being one really helps? I was reading Psalm 23 this week, and it occurred to me that King David was a true optimist, I am never in need...green pastures...peaceful waters...paths of righteousness...my cup overflows...even though I walk through the dark valley of death, because you are with me, I fear no harm...your rod and staff give me courage. His faith in God enabled him to overcome obstacles that would derail our faith. His faith in God allowed him to see winning possibilities in horrible circumstances. Remember how he faced a lion, a bear, a giant, and a mentally unstable king? Remember how he faced the death of a child, and rebellion within his own family? His faith empowered him to live with optimism and assurance of victory. When faced with setbacks and difficulties, our reactions reveal whether we are people of faith and optimism, or people of pessimism and defeat. There are three basic differences in the way optimists and pessimists react. The first is that the optimist sees a setback as temporary, while a pessimist sees it as permanent. When David s infant child died, he saw it only as a temporary separation. Even after praying and fasting that the child would not die, his faith in God never wavered. He could not bring the child back, but he said, I will go to him (2 Sam. 12:23). Even death is not permanent for those with faith in God. The second difference is that the optimist sees difficulties as specific, while the pessimist sees them as pervasive. David s sin with Bathsheba was not allowed to destroy his whole life and eternity. He messed up big time, but he dealt with it as the specific sin it was, repented, and went on to live as a man with the heart of God. His failure with Bathsheba did not cause his whole life to be a failure. The third difference is that optimists view events as external, while pessimists interpret events as personal. King Saul s repeated attempts to kill David was seen by David as rebellion against God, not him personally. He would not raise his hand against Saul because he still saw him as the Lord s anointed. Difficulties are most often simply external circumstances, not personal attacks. Learn from David to live by faith and optimism. Look upon the inevitable setbacks that you face as being temporary, specific, and exter-

We can use help collecting the following items for sorting: Ziploc Bags Hangers Hanging Racks Heavy Duty Rubber Bands Small Tarps Hello Happy spring! I hope everyone has enjoyed seeing the trees, bushes and flowers budding the last few weeks. Even though we have had some cooler days, they are not nearly as long or as cold now. I want to also wish you all a very Happy Easter! I thank God that Jesus rose from the grave. He kept His promise that those who believe on Him will have everlasting life. April will be a busy month! Beginning Sunday, April 3rd, our church will begin collecting food and supplies for the NC Baptist Children s Homes. The collection of items will run through Sunday, April 17th. A list of requested items will be located on the bulletin board in the breezeway across from the mailboxes. A plastic bin will be available to place your items. Everything we collect will be delivered to the Kennedy Home out from Kinston. Thank you for your donations! Sunday, April 10th will be Cooperative Program Sunday. Even though we do not collect for this particular program, our church, along with other Baptist Churches give a percentage of collected tithes to support the majority of the missions and ministries we are part of. Literature will be available on the table in the breezeway below the bulletin board. That same afternoon, our WMU will prepare an evening meal for the Hospice House families. Food needs to be placed in the fellowship hall no later than 3:30 pm. Linda Sorrells and Debbie Casey are coordinating this meal and they will deliver everything to the home at 4 pm. A very big church wide event we are having on Saturday, April 30th is Operation InAsMuch. This year our church will be having a free yard sale. Items for the taking will be held in the parking lot and extending in to the fellowship hall. The WMU, Baptist Men, Youth, Mission Friends, and other congregants will be manning the yard sale. The actual sale will start at 9 am and run through 1 pm. For those who are not familiar with Operation InAsMuch, this is an opportunity for our church to focus on a need in our community and for us to give freely to others by following Jesus example. Our goal is to touch as many lives as possible in that one day. Please pray for God s blessing on this ministry outreach and also for those who come. May many hearts be touched and may others see Jesus in us. Much more information will be coming in the next few weeks along with a sign up poster. In the meantime, please be putting aside anything that you can give. Items needed are gently used clothing and accessories in all size ranges including adults, babies, toddlers, children and teens; purses, shoes, boots, games and toys, kitchenware, unused cleaning supplies, outdoor items such as hoes, rakes, hoses, etc; used furniture, patio items, fishing and hunting supplies and accessories. Thank you to everyone who gives with a happy heart! Just think of all the wonderful things we have done and will continue to do! We give God all the glory! I feel He is working in us and helping us to be the light of the world. We can do all things through Him that strengthens us! Sincerely, Beth Thomas
