The mass of the collection is comprised of correspondences. The correspondences are largely written by family members to other family members concerning events of the times and family news. Of special interest are five letters written by Zillah Resigh Haynes concerning his work as a teacher in Lawrence County, Tennessee, and a letter by Margaret Haynes concerning a ladies group drilling for the Civil War in Smith County, Tennessee. A complete explanation of the correspondence can be found in the Name Index. The genealogy in the collection concerns the Haynes and Wilson families, giving a very good description of the family.
