COVER PHOTO: Fresh Air on the Vermilions G. Russell Case, 2012 Oil on canvas, 48 x 60 The original oil painting by noted Utah artist G. Russell Case, commissioned by the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation in 2012, resides in the board room of the Foundation s 14th Floor offices at 79 S. Main Street in Salt Lake City. It is representational of the Foundation s deep roots in the state of Utah, the legacy of its founders, and its continuing commitment to the state s treasured history, lands and people dating back to its earliest beginnings. The Vermilion Cliffs are the second step in the five-step Grand Staircase of the Colorado Plateau in Southern Utah and Northern Arizona. Designated part of Vermilion Cliffs National Monument in 2000, their scenic splendor includes some of the most beautiful and frequently photographed geologic formations in the world. They represented an important route used by settlers traveling from Utah to Arizona during the 19th Century. Today, U.S. Hwy. 89A follows the historic wagon route past the cliffs and up the Kaibab Plateau.

Oil portraits of Mr. and Mrs. Eccles by Houston artist Robert Joy, circa Mrs. Eccles, a native of Houston, Texas, was especially fond of Mr. Joy s portraiture. The portraits reside today in the board room of the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation offices. The BEST is yet to Come! On the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation, this book commemorates its extraordinary impact on the lives of all utahns. Created by Mr. and Mrs. Eccles in 1958, the Foundation became more active following the passing of Mr. Eccles in 1982, and it was then led by Mrs. Eccles until her death in The story of this remarkable couple, and the results of what they created more than a half-century ago, are rooted in the foresight, charitable interests and joy of giving that were hallmarks of the active partnership they shared. As the impact of their generosity - now exceeding $600 million continues to multiply a thousand-fold, so, also, does the measure of goodness it extends to their fellow citizens of Utah. Indeed even after six decades the best is yet to come. 1

For nearly half a century, through their community leadership and remarkable philanthropy, this dynamic couple made a lasting impact that has continued to foster the growth and success of the state and its citizens. Today, the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation furthers the goals of its founders as it strengthens communities and enriches the lives of Utahns through its ongoing charitable support of the arts, education, health and wellness, social services, historic preservation and the environment. A son of pioneering Utah industrialist David Eccles and his wife Ellen Stoddard Eccles, he was raised in Logan, Utah. After attending Utah State University and the University of California at Berkeley, he earned his business degree in 1922 from Columbia University in New York City. It was there he met fellow student Dolores Doré ( ), a native of Houston, Texas, affectionately known to her friends and family as Lolie. After graduation, George began his career at New York City s Irving Bank & Trust, one of the city s major financial institutions at the time. Later that year, he returned to Utah to accept a leadership role with his family s banks and to help establish First Security Corporation. He and Dolores were married three years later in 1925, and they lived for many years in FOUNDERS Ogden, Utah, the location of First Security s headquarters. They moved to Salt Lake City in 1953, when First Security s headquarters also moved from Ogden to Utah s capital city. 8

Mr. and Mrs. Eccles were strong, social and spirited individuals whose interests ranged from the arts and community causes to personal activities such as traveling, tennis, golf and skiing. During their 57 years together, they were among Utah s most generous civic leaders and benefactors who joined with countless others in statewide causes for the betterment of all Utahns. Following the death of George Eccles in 1982, Mrs. Eccles continued to take an active part in leading their foundation until her own passing in 1994 at the age of 91. Through their active community involvement and First Security leadership, they devoted themselves with passion and determination to strengthening the economic and cultural vitality of their state. They were a force for civic growth, giving of their advice, time, energy and means on behalf of nonprofits that have benefitted the state for decades. Today, each and every grant awarded by the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation remains a shining example of their legacy of generosity to their fellow Utahns. 12 Directors We look forward to our continued work with all of you our fellow Utahns as we strive to address the challenges and embrace the opportunities that lie before us. Foundation Board of Directors (l to r): Robert M. Graham, Secretary, Treasurer & General Counsel; Spencer F. Eccles, Chairman & CEO; and Lisa Eccles, President & COO Message from the Chairman Ican t help but be an optimist! I love Utah. I believe in our communities. I firmly believe in our people and especially our youth, who represent the future of our state. I feel greatly blessed to be a Utahn and an American. I am proud of our strong values of compassion, integrity and hard work, and of our rich Western heritage all of which set the stage for a promising future that gives each of us an opportunity to make a meaningful difference. I was fortunate to be born into a family that believes in the importance of giving back and doing our best to leave DIRECTORS things better than we found them. I was also taught that we can make an even greater impact by joining together with others. It s a tradition that began more than a century ago with my pioneering industrialist grandfather, David Eccles. In his more than 100 entrepreneurial business endeavors, he chose to never go it alone. Partnerships 10

working and sharing together were part and parcel of his business philosophy and a hallmark of his success. With that success came the chance to share with others: his partners, employees, customers, and individuals and families throughout Utah, especially those in need. My Uncle George, together with Aunt Lolie, built on his father s legacy throughout their lives and then, with foresight and generosity, created a foundation to carry on their philanthropic vision, entrusting us the next generation to build upon that legacy. It is a humbling responsibility, but one to which Lisa, Bob and I are deeply committed. Today, in guiding the Foundation, we feel fortunate to work together with so many wonderful people community leaders and citizens, volunteers and nonprofits who are doing incredible work down in the trenches each and every day to meet the needs of so many. Through the dedication and great work of these philanthropic partners, vital needs are met challenges are addressed artistic expression is inspired and the lives of those from every walk of life, in every corner of our state, are enriched and uplifted. Since the Foundation became most active 35 years ago, we have been privileged to invest more than $600 million throughout the State of Utah. It has been rewarding to be part of impactful projects that truly make a difference for those who call Utah home, whether through n n n n n n n a new community park for the children of Tabiona; funding for college scholarships statewide; health care for the homeless at the Fourth Street Clinic; preservation of irreplaceable wetlands and wildlife at the Great Salt Lake; building a place to call home through Habitat for Humanity; inspiring students to love history through the magic of Hamilton at the Eccles Theater; or supporting lifesaving care for a toddler at Primary Children s Hospital. These, and so many more examples like them, represent the depth and breadth of our decades-long partnership with the people of Utah. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all those who have helped us reach this milestone in our history. We look forward to our continued work with all of you our fellow Utahns as we strive to address the challenges and embrace the opportunities that lie before us. Together, with optimism, we can ensure an even brighter future for our state in which, yes the best is yet to come! Spencer F. Eccles Chairman & CEO 11

Many people call him a philanthropist. Spence Eccles calls himself a banker and businessman. And, he will quickly add, a ski racer, rancher, husband, father, grandfather, and, yes, of course a Utah Man, Sir! In every aspect of his life, this true native son of the West gives his time and resources generously to continue his family s long-held traditions of community involvement and support. Born and raised in Ogden, he s a proud grandson of enterprising Utah industrialist David Eccles on his father s side, and rugged Wyoming cattle rancher Benjamin Fox on his mother s. He manages to further both family legacies with ease, inspiring his children and grandchildren to build and expand businesses at one moment, while branding cattle the next. Grandfather Fox rode with Buffalo Bill s historic Wild West Show, he recalls with a twinkle of envy in his eye, and my mum was Miss Utah of her father s Ogden Wild West Rodeo. Those traditions mean a lot! Spencer Fox Eccles Chairman & CEO active in banking organizations and as Chairman Emeritus of Wells Fargo s Intermountain Banking Region. As a philanthropist, Spence is Chairman & CEO of the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation, and serves as Chairman or a board member of four other Eccles family foundations. Spence s legendary loyalty to the University of Utah is rooted in his student days when he was active in Beta Theta Pi fraternity, was a four-year letterman and All American on the U s Ski Team, and met Cleone Peterson of Fairview, Utah, with whom he shared more than 55 years of marriage until her passing in His generosity and enthusiasm for the U have never wavered, nor has his dedication to the success of winter sports in Utah, especially for youth. His unmatched support of the 2002 Winter Olympics was recognized by the IOC with its highest honor, the Pierre de Coubertin Award. Among his many awards are the Salt Lake Chamber s Giant in our City, Envision Utah s Common Good Award and eight honorary doctorates. As a banker and businessman, Spence led First Security Corporation the Eccles family s banking empire for nearly two decades as its Chairman & CEO until its historic merger with Wells Fargo in With degrees in Banking and Finance from the University of Utah and Columbia, followed by banking experience at Citibank in New York and First Security in Boise, he was well-prepared when recruited by his Uncles Marriner and George to lead the family banking enterprise. His leadership in the wider business community has extended to many corporate boards, and he also remains Spence and his Aunt Lolie at the 1989 Ground Breaking of the Dolores Doré Eccles Broadcast Center, home to KUED-7 and KUER-FM 90.1 The valuable perspectives Spence brings to his leadership have grown from deep Utah roots, which he has combined with his own great enthusiasm and love for his state as he carries on his family s legacy of giving.

It s been such a privilege to be a part of this Foundation, says Lisa Eccles, reflecting on nearly 30 years of involvement and leadership. She recalls with affection her early days at the Foundation when she worked closely with her Aunt Lolie and admired her compassion for others and her gentle way of giving back to a community for which she cared so deeply. Aunt Lolie particularly believed in the power of the arts to bring joy and beauty to our lives, to improve our well-being, and to help create rich, vibrant communities, Lisa says. It is her vision, along with that of my Uncle George, that inspires my work every day. Serving at the helm of the Foundation s day-today operations since 1989, Lisa has had an up-close perspective on the varied missions, growing needs, and creative solutions of Utah s nonprofit organizations. She recognizes the critical services they provide to address challenges, and works in tandem with nonprofit executives, community leaders and fellow grantmakers to identify and support innovative, impactful programs across the state. In doing so, she oversees the Foundation s statewide program that awards grants to more than 400 nonprofits each year, always looking to ensure the best use and wise stewardship of the resources that the Foundation invests in Utah s future. Lisa Eccles President & COO on the boards of numerous organizations. Also, at her alma mater, she has served on its Board of Trustees and advisory boards for the College of Dolores Eccles and Lisa Eccles, 1992 Fine Arts and Natural History Museum of Utah. Lisa brings valued insights to the Foundation s descision-making through her active community outreach, her decades-long work with nonprofits across the state and, perhaps most importantly, her personal relationship with the founders, her greataunt and great-uncle. With a deep understanding of their vision and legacy of generosity, she says, It s an honor for me to represent my generation in ensuring that their tradition of giving continues. A graduate of the University of Utah with an Art History degree, Lisa has enjoyed serving in the state s arts and cultural communities, including Lisa with the Foundation staff (l to r): Erin Armstrong, Lisa Eccles, Maggie Montague and Toni Lehtinen 13

Robert M. Graham Secretary, Treasurer & General Counsel Growing up in the small town of Fairview, located in central Utah s Sanpete County, Bob Graham developed an extraordinary work ethic, strong character and deep belief in the value of doing for others. In addition, his mother s lifelong career as a first-grade teacher inspired his commitment to education both his own and the opportunities he generously provides through his philanthropy for others to reach their educational goals. Following graduation from North Sanpete High School, Bob earned his Associate s degree from Snow College in Ephraim, Utah, his Bachelor s degree from BYU, and his Juris Doctorate from the University of Utah College of Law. As he tells it, his real success at Snow College was meeting his future wife, Joyce Sorensen, with whom he would share a perfect marriage. Their 60 years together were enriched by community and church service, worldwide travel, and three daughters and their families that now include 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. A cancer survivor for many years, Joyce passed away in in 2000, and continues to play a vital role at the Foundation in financial management, legal affairs and grant-making programs. As an active member of Utah s philanthropic community, Bob also serves on the Board of Directors of the Nora Eccles Treadwell Foundation and the Florence Gillmor Foundation. During a career that now spans almost six decades, Bob has also served his community with leadership roles on several boards, including Deseret Book, Primary Children s Hospital, the Governor s Tax Review Commission, and as president of the Salt Lake Rotary Club. He would be the first to tell you, however, that nothing has meant more to him than the roles he has cherished most: husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Bob began his successful, 28-year career as a tax partner with Haskins & Sells (now Deloitte and Touche). In doing so, he became a trusted advisor to a wide array of civic and business leaders alike, including George S. Eccles. In the late 1980s, with the encouragement of Mr. Eccles, Bob joined the law firm of Ray Quinney & Nebeker as well as the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation. He was named to the Board of Directors Bob s daughters (l to r) Teri Ferney, Diane Smith and Carolyn Buma, join him next to the portrait of their parents in the Robert M. and Joyce S. 18 Arts and Culture Apassionate interest in the arts and culture, including arts education, inspired George and Dolores Eccles to generously support music, dance, theater, the visual arts and other forms of artistic and cultural enrichment during their lifetimes. The Foundation has continued to build on that tradition through its grants large and small alike in support of Utah s flagship arts organizations as well as small, local, communitybased initiatives and programs. Each enriches opportunities for individuals, especially youth, throughout Utah to benefit from the vital part the arts play in their lives, while also strengthening the cultural offerings so critical to the overall economic vitality and diverse social vibrancy of the state. In this extraordinary theater and gathering place, Utahns and visitors alike enjoy enlightening, world-class performances that open new worlds, ideas and experiences for audiences of all ages. The theater s inaugural season attracted more than 350,000 patrons unprecedented numbers even in the state of Utah where citizens attend more performing arts events than anywhere else in the nation (2016 Americans for the Arts study). Says Steve Boulay of the theater s producing partner, MagicSpace Entertainment, The Eccles far surpassed our initial hopes for its programming, attendance and economic impact! It has garnered large audiences for musicians and speakers such as Johnny Mathis, Neil DeGrasse Tyson, David Sedaris and others, and its first two seasons of touring Broadway shows included packed houses for productions such as The Lion King, Phantom of the Opera and the landmark hit, Hamilton: An American Musical, during one of its earliest nationwide tours. With tickets for every performance of its month-long run selling out in less than four hours, the production garnered an enthusiastic 80,000+ patrons. Spencer F. 23 #EduHam Without a doubt, the hot ticket in Salt Lake City in spring 2018 was for Hamilton: An American Musical. Thanks to EduHam the allied Hamilton Education Program more than 2,000 high school students from throughout Utah experienced first-hand what all the hype was about! They spent weeks studying Alexander Hamilton and the nation s founding era as part of their history curriculum. The program was made possible through a publicprivate funding partnership between the State of Utah and private donors, including the Foundation. Following the path Lin-Manuel Miranda took in developing his Tony-winning hip-hop musical, many students created original works poems, raps, songs, essays or dances based on an event or historical figure from our nation s founding, and competed to represent their schools. On May 4, 2018, twelve regional winners performed on the Eccles Theater stage to rave reviews from their fellow high-schoolers and Hamilton cast members before enjoying a performance of the blockbuster musical. American history never before so popular on social media or in high school halls has now made a lasting impact on the youth of Utah! 36 ENVISION UTAH Anyone who has ever visited the Pack Creek Ranch near Moab, Utah, understands why it was the birthplace of Envision Utah more than 30 years ago. In that magnificent spot at the foothills of the LaSal Mountains once home to Ute Indians, early trappers and Mormon settlers Spence Eccles was among two dozen young civic leaders who gathered in 1987 to address concerns about Utah s future growth and development. The grassroots planted there created the Coalition for Utah s Future which became Envision Utah. Since then, state and community leaders, side-by-side with the public-at-large, have been key to its success. The statewide priorities that were developed are now at the forefront in decision-making in areas ranging from water use, air quality, transportation, agriculture and education to energy, housing, public lands, recreation, the economy and more. Throughout, the vital support of the Foundation, now totaling nearly $6 million, has led the way in these efforts to ensure Utah remains thoughtful and proactive in planning for its future. Thirty years after that initial gathering, Spence Eccles still serves as Co-chair of Envison Utah with Utah Governor Gary Herbert. THE ROAD HOME COMMUNITY 34 With grants totaling more than $12.5 million, the decades-long partnership of the Foundation with The Road Home has helped it provide vital warmth, shelter and supportive services to countless homeless individuals and families in the Salt Lake Valley. While addressing these needs presents ongoing challenges, the community has been fortunate to be able to count on The Road Home s dedicated staff and volunteers to stretch every donated dollar to its limits to help those who find themselves on the streets, often facing Utah s sub-zero winter temperatures and harsh conditions. The Foundation remains focused on tackling the multitude of issues that contribute to homelessness in Utah. Among its past grants was $1.5 million in 2007 to assist in rehabilitating a former hotel to become Palmer Court, an apartment complex providing long-term housing and support for the homeless, and $1.5 million in 2014 for major renovation of the Midvale Community Shelter.

Education Among the greatest priorities for the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation is ensuring excellence in higher education throughout the State of Utah. During their lifetimes, both George and Dolores Eccles were actively involved with Utah s colleges and universities. Their goal: to make available to Utah s students the highest quality higher education. Their passion for fostering extraordinary educational opportunities lives on through the Foundation s support of every college and university in the state. Always, first and foremost, it is focused on the students. Whether grants are designated for scholarships and facilities, investments in the quality of faculty, or support for curricula, libraries, athletics, research opportunities and more, the directors remain committed to educating this generation of Utah s students and those to come to ensure they reach their educational goals, make the most of their talents, and provide the leadership to keep Utah and America strong.

University of Utah David Eccles School of Business Named in 1991 in honor and memory of pioneering Utah industrialist and entrepreneur David Eccles father of George S. Eccles the University of Utah s David Eccles School of Business remains a focus of the Foundation s philanthropy. Grants have supported not only student scholarships, faculty excellence and innovative teaching initiatives, but also the transformation of the school s physical campus. What began in 2000 with the opening of the C. Roland Christensen Center led to the 2006 announcement of the school s campaign to create a new David Eccles School of Business campus, replacing 1960s-era buildings with state-of-the-art classrooms and innovative learning spaces. The Foundation s $17.6 million lead gift set the campaign on a course for success that has continued for more than a decade. Today, at the heart of the campus is the school s flagship, 189,000-sq. ft. Spencer Fox Eccles Business Building, which opened in It was joined in 2016 by the innovative Lassonde Studios; in 2017 by the Thomas S. Monson Center, home to the school s Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute; and in 2018 by the Robert H. and Katharine B. Garff Executive Education Building. Recently, a landmark $20 million grant funded jointly with $10 million from the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation and the Marriner S. Eccles Foundation, with matching funds from the Charles Koch Foundation established the Marriner S. Eccles Institute for Economics and Quantitative Analysis, named for George Eccles eldest brother, the former chairman of the Federal Reserve, the nation s independent central bank founded in The institute will attract world-class faculty and researchers and enable outstanding students to pursue specialized economics degrees with innovative studies focused on econometric and data analysis, game theory, and wide-ranging economic thought. Gifts from the Eccles family have been without equal in their transformative effect on the growth in excellence of education at the University of Utah. The Foundation remains one of its most loyal and generous annual funding partners, with gifts totaling more than $3.5 million to assist not only with its In- Home, Toddler Beginnings and Preschool programs, but also a $1 million grant to help fund construction of facilities for these programs at its new school building in Rose Park, Utah UNIVERSITY OF UTAH ATHLETICS George Eccles was widely known for his commitment to educate Utah s youth about financial literacy, and his partnership with Jr. Achievement to meet that goal is one that Spence Eccles and the Foundation have generously and fervently continued ever since, expanding the programs statewide to reach youth throughout Utah. In 1989, Dolores Eccles was delighted to participate in the Grand Opening of the George S. Eccles Tennis Center at the University of Utah. The Foundation s support for the facility reflected George Eccles lifelong passion for tennis and his longtime friendship with David L. Freed, who chaired the center s fundraising campaign. The Foundation also funded a scholarship in Mr. Freed s name as part of the campaign. With the recent addition of its Spence Eccles Outdoor Courts, the facility provides a stateof-the-art venue for the University s PAC-12 men s and women s tennis teams and their matches while also serving the wider University and Salt Lake area communities. 51

THE UNIQUE GIFT OF ECCLES HOUSE On July 18, 2000, a garden party celebrated the gift of the former home of George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles to the University of Utah. Located at 1525 Penrose Drive in Salt Lake City adjacent to the University s campus the home was donated to the University by Mrs. Eccles and the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation. Mr. and Mrs. Eccles called the stately, historic residence their home for more than 40 years. Designed by prominent Utah architect Georgius Young Cannon, the home and its gardens, in the heart of the Federal Heights neighborhood, encompass more than three acres. It was originally constructed in 1936 for Julian N. and Edith H. EDUCATION Bamberger, who resided there with their two daughters until Mr. and Mrs. Eccles bought the residence in

In the philanthropic spirit that personified Mr. and Mrs. Eccles during their lifetimes, their treasured home and its contents were bequeathed to the University in Their vision for the future of Eccles House was for it to continue as a place of beauty to be enjoyed by members of the Salt Lake City and University communities. The Foundation provided for the home and its grounds to be refurbished and renewed under the direction of architect Max Smith and the firm of MJSA Architects, and landscape designer Garr Campbell. Many of the antique furnishings of Mr. and Mrs. Eccles were restored and returned to the home, along with selected pieces from their collections of fine art gathered through years of traveling throughout the world. Beginning in 2000, Eccles House served for several years as the residence of the University s vice president for Health Sciences. Today, it provides a warm and welcoming home for the President of the University of Utah and a gracious social and entertainment setting enjoyed by University faculty, staff, students, alumni, friends and distinguised campus visitors.
