2 Ponderings from the President Hello, all you lily lovers and a hearty welcome to those of you who have just joined the Iowa Regional Lily Society (IRLS)! We just celebrated the lily season with our annual IRLS Show at Reiman Gardens on June 24 th. Reiman Gardens had a free day at the gardens to celebrate pollinators and they were very pleased to have the lilies on display as an added bonus. Kudos to all who made the show not only successful but also quite beautiful. We had a grand total of 114 stems in the Horticulture Division and 9 entries in the Design Division. The list of award winners can be found elsewhere in the newsletter. Thanks to all who helped with setting up, tearing down and bringing lilies to share with the public! It was a beautiful sight to behold As many of you know, my family is in the process of moving from our home in Johnston to the family farm in southern Iowa. Part of the process has included moving hundreds (or thousands?) of lily bulbs and other plant material. At the end of November, after digging for 3 months, the lilies all went into the ground in a matter of three Saturdays. And then it got cold and snowed. You can imagine how happy I was to see almost all of them growing and flowering this summer! Since we have a large deer and rabbit population, this spring found us putting up an 8 foot deer fence. Not an easy project unless you have good help, which we did! We have an exciting year ahead of us in IRLS. Changes have been proposed for our IRLS Constitution and those will be found in this newsletter. Please read the old and the new versions very closely so you understand how the composition of the Board of Directors, the Newsletter Editor s position and the positions of Secretary and Treasurer have changed. Also note the information about amendments. Wanda Lunn will be sending out cards to all members to vote on the proposed changes. It would be fantastic to have 100% of them returned with your votes! This fall we will be having another Lily Symposium. Please let me or the Board members know if you have ideas for interesting speakers. It s your symposium so give us your input! Next summer we will be hosting the 2018 NALS Convention and Show (North American Lily Society) in West Des Moines. We will be spending time at our meetings planning and preparing for that. In 2013 we blew them away with our hospitality and preparations so let s do it again. Sue Williams and Wanda Lunn are the Co-chairs for the Convention and they will be asking all of us to help. Please think about what you could or would like to do. Lots of jobs open from Registration to Hospitality to set up and tear down and everything in between. Many people helping in little ways adds up to a successful and fun convention and show. I hope all your lilies are well-mulched to deal with the heat and lack of rain lately and I hope you can enjoy the sunshine and the summer, Kristi Evans, IRLS President 2

3 Vice President Kristi Evans opened the meeting at 12:30 pm. The business portion of the Winter meeting was cancelled due to low attendance. Jean Rhodes presented a program on the benefits of growing garlic. Treasurer's Report read and approved. 5 The Blue Glass Passion Flower was a site to behold in the Climatron at the Missouri Botanical garden. Dear Members, On the following pages are the current IRLS Constitution and the proposed IRLS Constitution. The current constitution is printed word for word and the proposed constitution has all of the proposed changes written in red. The Board believes the proposed changes will help IRLS to run smoother and be friendlier to the membership. In 6 weeks you will receive a postcard asking you to submit a vote according to the current constitution. Please take the time to read the current and proposed versions of the constitution so that you will be ready to vote when you get the postcard. The Board wishes to thank you for taking the time to do this and make the Iowa Regional Lily Society great. In 2018, IRLS will host the NALS Lily Show and Symposium in West Des Moines June 27-July 1 at the Sheraton west Des Moines, so mark your calendars and come for a great time and see lilies from all over North America! 5

Soon the Quarterly Bulletin will post the results of the show and NALS 2017 will be in the books! That means that now our attention will focus on 2018 and the NALS Show in West Des Moines. Sometimes life works in funny ways. During the show we noticed that there were 2 stems of Kentucky in a class and learned later that they were both entered by IOWANS! The results are pictured below. Jean Rhodes and Wanda Lunn show off their stems of Kentucky. 14
