8 - MEMORIAL - ORDAINED ELDER AND MI DISTRICT SUPERINTENDENT DR. JOHN E. SEAMAN John Seaman was born to medical missionaries Dr. Lauren and Nell Seaman who were serving in Swaziland, Africa. At two years of age, his family left Africa and settled in Chicago where John s father enjoyed a prominent medical practice during John s childhood and adolescence. Growing up, he and his family were active members of the Emerald Avenue Church of the Nazarene on the Chicago Central District. After graduating from Fenger High School, John attended Olivet Nazarene College in Kankakee, Illinois, and graduated with a bachelor s degree in Christian Education in He subsequently earned master s degrees in Missions and Christian Education from Nazarene Theological Seminary and did doctoral studies in Missions at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois. Dr. Seaman married Linda Sue Smith of Sterling, Illinois following graduation from Olivet. Following completion of graduate studies at Nazarene Theological Seminary, the Seamans were appointed as Nazarene missionaries to Martinique in the French Caribbean. After serving ten years in Martinique, they accepted the assignment to pioneer the French work for the Church of the Nazarene in West Africa. Dr. Seaman served in Abidjan, Côte d lvoire as field director for seventeen years. In 2000, both John and Linda were given the Distinguished Service Award by the Michigan District NMI and in May 2003, together, received honorary doctorates from their alma mater, Olivet Nazarene University. He was beginning his 28 th year of missionary service when elected district superintendent of the Michigan District Church of the Nazarene during the 90 th annual district assembly in July of Dr. Seaman served as our district superintendent from 2003 until 2016, when he was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. He passed away on March 19, There is a noticeable void here today as we miss our leader and friend; a noticeable silence as we miss his booming voice and laughter. But, his presence is shown in the ways that his life has impacted each of us and by the sustainability of our district due to his leadership. Our love and prayers are with Linda and the family today and always. 8
