3 LPR 47 James Dellet Family Papers: Biographical Sketches James Dellet was born in 1788 at Philadelphia, Pa. His family moved to South Carolina while he was still a baby and it was there that he grew up and went to college, graduating with honors from South Carolina College in Dellet then studied law and was admitted to the bar in In 1819 Dellet moved to Claiborne in Monroe County, Ala.., where he became a circuit court judge. He quickly became involved in the politics of the new state and was elected as a representative of the county in the first general assembly. Once at the assembly, Dellet was elected speaker of the house of representatives. In the ensuing 12 years he served as a representative; was speaker of the house again in 1821; and also served as chairman of the judiciary committee. Dellet made a bid for congress in 1833 as the representative from the Mobile District. At that time he was defeated by Gov. John Murphy. In 1838 Dellet ran again, this time defeating Murphy for a seat in the Twenty-sixth Congress. As a congressman Dellet, who was a member of the Whig party, dealt with the issues of slavery, tariff laws, nullification, and manifest destiny. Dellet was re-elected in 1843 and continued to serve as a congressional representative until health problems forced him to retired from public life. After his retirement, Dellet devoted himself to managing his plantation in Claiborne. James Dellet was married twice. His first wife was Harriet Willison of South Carolina. They had one child, a daughter, Emma Eugenia Dellet. Harriet Willison Dellet died in In 1842 Dellet married Mary Wormley from Tennessee, a cousin of his former wife. Dellet died on Dec. 21, 1848 in Claiborne, Ala. Lyman Gibbons was born June 3, 1808, at Westerlo, New York. He moved to Alabama in 1833, when he became a member of the faculty of Spring Hill College in Mobile. He forged his first connection with the Dellet family when he moved to Claiborne, Ala., and established a law parnership with James Dellet. In the ensuing years, he practiced law in Mobile from ; read civil law in Paris ; and practiced law in New Orleans and Mobile, In 1851 he began serving as a circuit court judge and in 1852, Gov. Collier appointed him a supreme court justice, a position he resigned in 1854 to become a planter in Monroe County. His last public position came in 1861 when he represented Monroe County in the 1861 constitutional convention. In 1853 Gibbons cemented his Dellet family connections by marrying Dellet s daughter, Emma. They had one daughter, Helen Dolly Gibbons. Lyman Gibbons died in 1879; his wife Emma died in Helen Dolly Gibbons married Charles J. Torrey. Torrey was a native of Claiborne, Ala., who was born on April 25, Admitted to the bar in 1873, he was soon appointed register in chancery for Monroe County. He resigned the position a few years later and moved to Mobile, where he joined the law firm of Pillans, Torrey and Hanaw. In 1889 he was elected city attorney of Mobile, an office he held for several terms. He died July 14,1917 in Mobile. They had no children. 3

JAMES DELLET FINANCIAL RECORDS, , undated The financial records of James Dellet reflect various financial matters, in which Dellet was involved throughout his business and legal career. The types offinancial records in this subseries include receipts, records relating to estate settlements, promissory notes, ledger sheets, account settlements, and various similar papers. The amount due and receipts to payments made vary from under $ to over $1, The large payments made by Dellet and the debts he incurred through business transactions with merchants, reflect on Dellet s wealth and his financial affairs as a plantation owner and lawyer. Some of these papers reflect on the slave and cotton trade in Alabama. They also depict the amount of court fees due to Alabama courts as a result of lawsuits and estate settlements. It is interesting to note the types of goods that Dellet bought on account. Included are such goods as whiskey, dried apples, salt, shoes for slaves, Irish potatoes, cherry brandy, pork, and flour. Also included are the estate settlements of James Dellet (Senior) and John C. Dellet. The latter could be a family member, possibly an uncle or his brother. SPEECHES, 1844, undated This series consists of speeches that were written and given by James Dellet. Included is a Speech of Mr. Dellet, of Alabama, of the Committee on the Rules, with instructions to insert the twenty-fifth rule, to prevent the reception of abolition petitions which was delivered before the U. S. House of Representatives, February 22, Also included is a speech concerning the Whig party of Alabama and a speech concerning nullification of the Tariff Acts of Box 16, Folder , undated B. SPEECHES, undated (oversized) This series contains three speeches, all of which are incomplete. The first speech, which was read by Dellet before the U. S. Congress, focuses on the U.S. Tariff Acts of 1828 and He describes how some states benefit from the laws, whereas for other states the tariff is a burden. Dellet states that he believes... the Tariff (to be) a violation of the spirit of the Constitution. He claims that the agricultural and shipping interests of the country are being affected. The second speech, of which the authorship is unclear, apparently was a 46 page speech of which only seven pages are left. It discusses the United States tendency to imitate Great Britain, and how Great Britain s religion and morality had caused Britain to become involved in emancipation, worthy of being followed by the U.S. It describes the 1713 Treaty of Utrecht which gave Great Britain exclusive right to furnish slaves to the Spanish settlements, West Indies, and colonies of America for the space of thirty years. It also states that the Assiento, which stipulated these rights, allowed for the shipment of 1,044,000 negroes of both sexes and all ages, at the rate of four thousand eight hundred per year, and mentions the constitutional amendment, that was put into effect on 1 Jan. 1808, which forbids the importation of slaves into the U.S. The speech is written in the form of a sermon, with several mentions to the virtues of England, and the moral purity of the abolitionists of the North. The third speech discusses the Tariff Acts, again. All three speeches seem to have been written during the 1840's. Box 21, Folder 5 undated VIII. One photograph is of an unidentified young female, and the other is of James Dellet s house in Claiborne, Alabama. One stereograph depicts the monster engine of Prince Henry s special train, and the other depicts a theatrical scene of a family escaping a fire in their home. The photographs have a yellowish tinge, which means that they are probably albumen prints.
