One belief gave the Southern soldier grit and determination to march, on foot, hundreds of miles to do battle and to look death in the face and not blink. You see, a soldier's life, in the 1860's, was a harsh life. This gives me pause to try and understand why Camp # 1471, has about 85 members that pay annual due's membership, but has only 14 to 24 members that participate in camp meetings and activities.( about one fourth). I m thankful. I do believe however, we ALL joined the Sons of Confederate Veterans to pay homage and honor our ancestors beliefs, hardships. And, they paid dearly for those beliefs. The camp meets only one evening every month in a beautiful, historic tavern. Why can t we take the time once a month and drive ( or ride with someone) to our camp's SCV meeting? We all know that certain liberal organizations are trying to wipe off from the face of this earth everything our southern ancestors fought for and believed in. We, the Urquhart - Gillette Camp # 1471, are entrusted to the preservation of Southern Heritage, which, I remind you, includes the confederate soldier s good name. Please, do not let the enemy win! Fight back! I invite you to attend your camp s SCV meetings. Our heritage is at stake and severely under attack and we need your help. With Southern Pride, I remain your Commander, Jon D. Pyle. Treasure s/adjutant s Corner SCV Dues are NOW Past Due as of October 2011 Harvest Greetings, We still have about eight members who have NOT paid their Annual SCV DUES. All Dues NOW are PAST DUE and will result in an additional $5 Charge. I am now taking money and reservation for the Lee- Jackson Banquet on Jan. 14th, It s $20/person;$10/ child under 12 yrs. Chaplain Wayne Cutchins gave the benediction. Dixie sung by all! Thanksgiving Blessings by Chaplain Wayne Cut chins Franklin, Virginia November 2011 Where has the heat of summer gone? With the cool briskness in the air, we all know that the fall season and Thanksgiving can t be far away. Have you really thought about all the things we need to be thankful? There are so many that we take most of these things for granted. Let me list a few. I am thankful for my family. I was born right here in Southampton County and grew up in this wonderful area. My parents were not wealthy as far as money goes, but we were very rich in our family values. We never had everything we wanted but we had all we needed. Hard work was a quality I learned early and am thankful that jobs were available for me. I am thankful for my health. You know it is so easy to complain about the pains that come from a hard day s work or over-doing it with the kids but good health is a blessing from God. I have been truly blessed with good health. I am thankful for a good education in my youth. Without the basic learning, where would each of us be today? A good education is certainly a requirement for quality, well-paying job. Finally, I am very thankful for my church and my Savior, Jesus Christ. I was fortunate to be raised in the church and learned early that all of life s pleasures are gift from God. Stop and think for a moment. Each of the items above is all gifts from God. I could have been born in an entirely different situation but this is where God chose me to be. Education, jobs, health, family, and church are all blessing that God has blessed me with. During this Thanksgiving Day, please take time with your family and friends and pause to give the glory to our Lord and King. God Bless. Wayne Cutchins, Chaplain Urquhart-Gillette Camp #1471

5 November Urquhart-Gillette Star Page 5 Confederate Heritage Under attack in Virginia.. special by the Star editor, T.B. Simmons LEXINGTON, Va. Back in September while we were frying fish, Officials in the city of Lexington Virginia, with their own hot grease voted to prohibit the flying of the Confederate flag on city-owned poles. In a public hearing, the Lexington City Council voted 4-1 to allow only U.S., Virginia and city flags to be flown. The Sons of Confederate Veterans membership showed up in force, rallying in a sea of Confederate flags and has vowed to challenge the ordinance in court. Numerous speakers during the meeting said the ordinance was an insult to the men who bravely fought in the War Between the States, who were defending their Southern beliefs. In fact, it was mentioned that one man stayed silent during his allotted time to speak, in memory of his confederate ancestor. Quite a few residents spoke against the Confederate flag and words such as offensive and, divisive and slavery were mentioned. But compatriot H.K. Edgerton was present also. Edgerton, who is black, and a member of the SCV wore a T-shirt blazed with images of his black confederate ancestors. Edgerton is a great speaker too! He supports us in the flying of the Confederate flag because, like the rest of us, he wants to honor his confederate heritage. He regularly attends SCV events across the country speaking on behalf of the SCV. Check this Tennessee SCV Division video website out: Make sure visit this site! "What you're going to do in banning the Southern cross is wrong. May God bless Dixie," Edgerton said, as many present at the Lexington, Va. public hearing gasps with disbelief. Opponents rallied in the Lexington s downtown city park, then marched to the hearing under a sea of Confederate flags. "I am a firm believer in the freedom to express our individual rights, which include flying the flag that we decide to fly," said one Civil War re-enactor dressed his wool Confederate l uniform. The city ordinance now will extend to flags from Virginia Military Institute and Washington and Lee University. Both colleges are in the city. "The Confederate flag is part of our heritage." said one bystander, and this city ought to be ashamed because this our history here that s being changed. The Sons of Confederate Veterans organized the "Save our Flags" gathering, which offered hot dogs and blue grass music. Speakers addressed the crowd to rally themselves. The Sons of Confederate Veterans has argued that restrictions on the flying of the Confederate flag in Lexington are especially painful because of the two military leaders' Lee and Jackson strong ties to Lexington and Virginia. One promotional flyer depicted General R.E. Lee with a tear rolling down his cheek. Jackson taught at VMI before the War. Widely known as "Stonewall, after the first Battle of Manassas, he died in 1863 from wounds suffered at Chancellorsville along with pneumonia, and is buried in Lexington, The Stonewall Jackson House is in Lexington. Lee, who led Confederate forces during the War before surrendering at Appomattox in 1865, became president of Washington College, now Washington and Lee University. And we all know, lee is buried there. City Manager Jon Ellestad reportedly said that the ordinance only affected city property and wasn't directly aimed at the Confederate flag. "The SCV can carry the flag anywhere they want to," he said. However, the city council could live to regret this ordinance. Brandon Dorsey is the local commander of Camp 1296 of the Stonewall Brigade of the Confederate Veterans. The SCV intends to fight this one. Indeed, our confederate heritage is under attack, right here in Virginia. Stay tuned..
