1 Advent 2015 Crafting the Future with God: a New Global Christian Community ANNUAL REPORT: FISCAL YEAR

2 A Letter from Central s President Dear Faithful Friends of Central, Crafting the Future with God Jesus commissioned the early disciples to go into all the world and preach the Gospel (Mark 16:15), and the outward spiral of faithful witness continues to this very day. Faith comes by hearing, and thus proclaimers of such good news persist in their mission. God is calling Central to a significant role in Global Christianity. As you read the pages of the Voice, you will see the expansive witness our faculty and students are offering. Consider the many congregations and communities our graduates are shaping, truly all around the world. Doctor of Ministry graduates in Myanmar minister among the ethnic minorities in the varied states and townships of their land. Known as a great missionary force, Korean students share their faith in their homeland, as well as their adopted home in the US. Resettled persons from Myanmar, many who have come through refugee camps along the Burma-Thai border, are planting churches all across America. One of the reasons that American Baptists showed a slight growth in the recent Pew Report is because of immigrant churches. Central could not do this work without your generous support. This Advent edition contains the list of donors. As I have reviewed these names, it has prompted grateful prayer for each of you. Some of these persons are alumni/ae; some have known remarkable graduates as their ministers; some give as part of their philanthropic commitment; and, all who give believe strongly in our mission. The names reflect the beautiful diversity of friends of Central. As we prepare for the Advent season, let us remember God s love for the whole world through coming as the Incarnate One. God could not bear to be distant from us, but became one of us. This is wondrous love, indeed! Faithfully in Christ, Molly T. Marshall President and Professor of Theology and Spiritual Formation A Letter from Central s President A New Global Christian Community Molly T. You as eternal Word became flesh and showed us how we are to live. In this Advent season, we want to sense your nearness once again as we hold you tenderly. On August 28, before the first night of classes at the CENTRAL Wisconsin site, many of the CENTRAL Wisconsin Alumni/ae from the past several years came together to host a dinner for the students. They took part in a time of orientation and encouragement for the students, as well. When the students went to their classes, the Alumni/ae met to discuss ways to support recruitment efforts for CENTRAL Wisconsin and by attending student events during the Fall and Winter months. Rev. Marie Onwubuariri, Executive Minister of the American Baptist Churches of Wisconsin and an administrator at CENTRAL Wisconsin, joined the meeting electronically from North Carolina. Rev. Onwubuariri was participating in a gathering in North Carolina working to produce congregational resources through the Alliance of Baptists, funded by the Arcus Foundation, concerning matters of racial justice, equity, and diversity. 2 3

3 Economics of Ministry Summit Dean Appointed as Provost Reflections on the Economics of Ministry $ummit October 1st turned out to be quite a day on the Central campus! More than 100 persons pastors, students, lay leaders, denominational executives, seminary staff and faculty assembled to learn and to dialogue with the express purpose of addressing the serious economic challenges facing our ministers and our churches in these days. Attendees listened to President Molly T. Marshall deliver a passionate plenary address, participated in lively workshop presentations, and networked around thoughtful table conversations. I think this has been one of the most relevant and timely conferences I ve attended in a long time, as well as one of the best, well organized conferences, and I ve been to a lot of them. What I ve seen in my own church is that it is not just an issue of pastors who have had to cope with high levels of debt, but young adults in general, and it affects their ability to give for the mission of the congregation. Dr. Carol Ann Holcomb, Central Trustee Central s goals for this groundbreaking event included the following: to explore the cost of theological education, to encourage churches to grow in their support of theological schools, and to assist congregations in planning appropriate compensation for pastoral leaders. Angela Jackson, Economics of Ministry Project Director, was pleased with the results: The day delivered so much more than the achievement of our goals. Attendees were challenged to think in new ways about using and sharing resources, inspired to consider alternate models of ministry, and energized to network with others who are called by God to persevere in the face of seismic economic shifts. I m so glad an institution like Central Seminary is taking a subject like this seriously and getting the conversation out there. Mark Buhlig, Pastor Leadership Team, Englewood Baptist Church, Kansas City, MO Very informative, practical, encouraging Rev. Sherry McGlaughlin, Pastor, Blue Ridge Blvd Christian Church, Independence, MO Central has long suspected that the solutions to financial challenges among seminaries, churches, and ministers must be discovered through collaboration. This day represented collaboration at its best. While the Economics of Ministry $ummit confirmed that many clergy and congregations bear incredible financial burdens that may limit their ability to envision partnership, the event prompted all in attendance to consider the ways in which ministers, churches, and seminaries might become partners for the sake of the Gospel and the health of the Church. The Summit is very helpful and extremely informative. I wish more people, especially those who make financial decisions, could be here. Rev. Marsha Perkins, Director of Christian Education, Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church, Kansas City, MO I am learning new ways to look at funding my ministry post modern ways and new ways of how to do ministry. Alisha Smith Haddock, Women s Leadership Initiative, CENTRAL Tennessee This has been a good opportunity for networking new friends, new connections, and new resources. Rev. Cynthia Saddler, Pastor Leadership Team, Englewood Baptist Church, Kansas City, MO Robert E. Johnson Assumes Role of Provost/Dean of the Faculty Since August 2009, Dr. Johnson has served as Dean of the Seminary. During these years, the seminary has experienced phenomenal growth in numbers of students; hence Central was recently named one of the twelve fastest growing seminaries in North America. Dr. Robert E. Johnson offers the invocation at the Fall Convocation service. As Dean, Johnson has been the chief architect of the Korean Studies program, the Doctor of Ministry in Congregational Health, the create program, extension sites, and innovative curricular revision. He has also overseen accreditation processes with both ATS and HLC, garnering positive results. In recognition of his significant service to the academic mission of the seminary, President Marshall named Johnson Provost/Dean of the Faculty effective October 1. His vision for theological education is cutting-edge and commands the respect of his peers in other institutions as well as at Central. CENTRAL Ann Arbor welcomes Adjunct Professor Sameerah L. Shareef this fall. She is teaching The Worshipping Church class, which is being offered as a hybrid course meeting in person and online. Rev. Sameerah Shareef enjoys life in a variety of ministerial settings. She is an ordained Minister with the United Church of Christ (UCC) and is currently serving as designated pastor at St. Stephen s Community Church UCC in Lansing, Michigan. Interestingly, Rev. Shareef has served in many ministry capacities in the church, including the creation of the Women s Ministry, Girl s Rites of Passage Group, Garment of Praise Music Ministry, and many others. She currently serves the Greater Lansing Community as a Certified Nurse-Midwife with Alliance Ob/Gyn in East Lansing, Michigan. Sameerah holds several degrees including a Master s of Science in Nursing and a Master s of Divinity Degree from Chicago Theological Seminary. 4 Site Director Julie Kilmer says, We are thrilled that Rev. Sameerah is sharing her academic skills and her ministry with us! 5

4 Crafting a New Global Christian Community in Myanmar Crafting a New Global Christian Community in Myanmar Arcus Foundation Facilitates Human Sexuality Training in Myanmar In September President Molly T. Marshall and CENTRAL Ann Arbor Site Director Julie Kilmer participated in a human sexuality training workshop in Yangon, Myanmar, sponsored by the Peace Studies Center of Myanmar Institute of Theology, Colors Rainbow, and Central Seminary, through the funding of the Arcus Foundation. The conference drew together persons from a variety of perspectives, all working for human rights, especially for those who experience discrimination because of gender identity or sexual orientation. Indeed, discrimination may be too mild a term when criminalization of sexual acts, torture, or even the death penalty are involved. Along with President Marshall and Dr. Kilmer, Maung Maung Yin and Mana Tun lectured and facilitated discussion of the interface between theological ethics, biblical interpretation, public policy, and advocacy for human rights. Representatives from Equality Myanmar called attention to international treaties and the situation in Myanmar. Dr. Julie Kilmer (third from the right on the front row) with participants in the Human Sexuality Training in Myanmar in September. Said Marshall, The sessions were earnest, lively, and engaging, with persons from disparate contexts sharing insights. It is important to get such voices at the table. The room was populated with activists, scholars, theological students, and community developers. What drew us together was common concern for justice for sexual minorities. Thankfully, in our day, new attention is given to the threatened lives of these persons. Deeply embedded homophobic and transphobic attitudes, often combined with lack of legal protection, exposes LGBT persons to egregious violations of their human rights. Young gay persons in attendance were glad to hear a progressive Christian perspective. The UN, under the leadership of Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, continues to call the global community to justice. He writes: Some say that sexual orientation and gender identity are sensitive issues. I understand. Like many of my generation, I did not grow up talking about these issues. But I learned to speak out because lives are at stake, and because it is our duty under the United Nations Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to protect the rights of everyone everywhere. President Marshall with Dr. Maung Maung Yin of MIT enjoyed time together during the conference. Marshall s lecture called attention to the ways in which religious perspectives and misuse of sacred texts have been used as weapons against women, and by extension, against LGBT individuals. Reflecting on that lecture, she said, The perspectival bias in biblical hermeneutics is unquestionably patriarchal, and sexual discrimination has been traditionally derived from the Bible written by men, for men, with little consideration given to the lives of women. Likewise, same-sex behavior receives marginal attention in the Bible; when mentioned, the primary concern is to protect the prerogatives of males, for whom any experience of 'effeminization' undermines their status. Participants from disparate contexts, drawn together by common concern for justice for sexual minorities, share insights. It was an interesting time to be in Myanmar. The parliament had recently passed Protection of Race and Religion Bills, which were quite regressive. Not only did they compromise religious liberty regarding conversion and women s rights, they also had ongoing implications for the LGBT community as these laws embolden oppressive actions. During a regional parliamentary session in Mandalay in August 2015, the region s minister of border and security affairs, Dr. Myint Kyu, called on police to arrest gay people. He pledged that we are constantly taking action to have the gays detained at the police stations, educate them, then hand them back to their parents. Abuse is a regular practice, and his harsh words have given warrant for it. Kilmer, who presented a lecture titled Discrimination: Theories of Homosexuality while there, reflected on her time in Myanmar: Never in my life did I ever imagine going to Myanmar. The best part was the community of people gathered to think about, talk about and pray for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people. The reality is that progress for Myanmar s LGBT population is being made, albeit slowly. Improving education is at the forefront of Myanmar s LGBT movement, and this starts with a genuine commitment from faculty, staff, students, and friends of Central Seminary. Marshall observed, A conference like this is important work, and I am grateful for Central s support and commitment. I trust we will continue to develop ways to equip pastoral leaders for knowledgeable and compassionate ministry. 6 7

Marcia will be not be continuing in her role because of health needs, but Duane will continue to organize and carry out the FOUNDATIONS Judson Communities (FJC) ministry certificate courses which have already been offered in five locations with 213 graduates from 16 states and 36 cities/churches. Now the FJC program is heading in new directions. The sixth course using the Karen language is underway in Portland, OR. In Oakland, CA, another FJC course, which is unique in several ways, has also begun. It is the first course to be taught using the Burmese language, the first to be held in California, for the first time plans are being made to make the classes available online, and this is the first group of students not predominantly made up of refugees. Bo Lay participates in worship with other students participating in the Oakland, California, FOUNDATIONS Judson Communities classes. It would be difficult to describe a typical person in the Oakland course. They come from a variety of ethnic groups like Chin, Karen, Kachin, and Chinese or various mixtures of these groups. They are all comfortable in the Burmese language and all were born in Burma, but none are ethnic Burmese. What binds them together is a love for the Lord, a love for their church, and a hunger to learn so they can better serve. Even though they might not be refugees, the journeys that bring the students to a Judson Communities class can be long and winding. Bo Lay is an example. Born in Burma to a Karen mother and Chinese father, he grew up speaking Burmese. With few opportunities for a living in Burma, he left for Singapore in 1995, then later moved on to Thailand. Finally, he gave in to God s call and worked as a secretary for a Burmese speaking church in Bangkok for a salary of less than $10 per month. In 2004 he and his wife, who was registered with the UN, both came to the US. They were placed in Sacramento where he and his family remain. Looking on his life he says, I have no degree and no certification. I only have God blessing me and I think the only reason I am so blessed is because I kept my promise to God. In recognition of his life of blessings, Blessed is the middle name of both his children. Bo Lay, one of the Burmese students in the FOUNDATIONS Judson Communities class in Oakland, California. Bo Lay says his life in the church has given him faith in the Lord. The Judson Communities classes have provided additional background and depth and provided additional resources that can be used as he serves the church. His hope and prayer is that all can study, grow, and be firm in their faith. Binkley observed, Dedicated instructors and devoted students like Bo Lay make the Judson Communities program a blessing with which to work. We re grateful for the new directions in which God has led and pray for His continued leading as we go forward. 6 DMin Students Help Denominations Craft the Future with God DMin Students Help Denominations Craft the Future with God Rev. Pat Hernandez, National Director for American Baptist Women in Ministry/ Transition Ministries, participated in the recent Baptist World Alliance Meetings in South Africa. Doctoral Students Take New Understanding of Healthy Church to Denominations At Central Seminary, doctoral students are taking a new understanding of what it means to be a healthy church to the denominational level. Moving beyond narrow measures of traditional church growth models and led by faculty at the cutting edge of the missional church movement, students and recent graduates serving in regional and national denominational roles are discovering often overlooked reasons for hope, potential, and vitality in the church. The Rev. Nathan Marsh enrolled in the D.Min. program as a young pastor serving two small congregations in the plains of western Kansas. In his second year of doctoral study, he accepted a call to be Associate Executive Minister of the American Baptist Churches of the Central Region, an area that covers Kansas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. His academic experience, including studying alongside a diverse cohort of students who think differently but support and encourage one another, has equipped Marsh to think outside the box when it comes to the local church. Ministry has become more mission than program, a transformative process of seeing the wonderful things that God is up to in our community and world. Equipped as a pastor to lead his congregations in an outward direction, Marsh will now apply this skill to the community of faith that stretches across three states. For D.Min. student Ronald Nunuk of Wisconsin, who works with more than 95 Chin refugee congregations as National Coordinator for Chin Ministries with American Baptist Home Mission Society, Central s D.Min. focus on congregational health has strengthened his ability to lead church leaders to become more missional. Dr. Arlo Reichter, retired Executive Minister of American Baptist Churches in Wisconsin, observed that a regional mission trip to New Orleans that had struggled for years to attract participants now has at least 30 persons committed to going because of Nunuk s leadership. As a member of the Chin tribal group in Myanmar, Nunuk came to the United States as a refugee himself about 10 years ago. He entered doctoral studies with a clear vision for inclusive Chin churches in America that would help them to let go of some cultural traditions that created barriers to youth and others. He said, I came with understanding about the immigrant church, but I did not understand how to lead in the right direction. D.Min. classes on engaging CENTRAL Tennessee is focusing on reinvigorating their chapel experiences this fall. MDiv student, Nathan Huguley, is serving as Site Director Sally Holt s teaching assistant this semester as part of his Ministry Praxis work. He is leading the initiative for student planned and led worship. In addition to revitalizing chapel, they hope to foster a better sense of community. Community is a challenge as students often see each other irregularly and have so many other commitments. The plan is to have students work in pairs on an inaugural worship experience that will take place in October. Two students are connecting to plan details about music, while two others are planning community service. Seven of the thirteen students in the Ministry Ethics class are taking the lead for the October chapel. The remaining students will plan chapel in November. Holt is excited about the plans. We are starting on October 9th and our theme for fall is gratitude. We will have two chapels this fall and plan to have at least two more in the spring. We'll start with the class I m teaching, expand to the CENTRAL Tennessee community, and then have high hopes of expanding to the greater Scarritt-Bennett community. community and missional ministry provided leadership tools that made him more effective. Most of all, Dr. Butler s class on vulnerable leadership gave me courage to say what I believed. I have come to understand that I must lead as who I am. Engaging with the best thinkers in the most relevant and up-todate subjects has helped the Rev. Mary Miller prepare for her new ministry as Executive Minister for the American Baptist Churches of Massachusetts. A D.Min. faculty that includes prominent faith leaders like Dr. Molly Marshall, president of Central; Dr. Amy Butler, the first female senior pastor of Riverside Church in New York City; and Dr. Bill Wilson, founder and president of The Center for Healthy Churches, challenges students to hone skills and bring new eyes and imagination to ministry. Although Miller faces the added challenge of undertaking her doctoral project dissertation just as she moves from Iowa to Maine to begin a new job, she has already practiced making immediate application of our learnings about ministry in the real world. Dr. Tom Wiles, who graduated last May, also moved across the country to accept a new denominational position in the midst of his doctoral Revs. Ronald Nunuk, Nathan Marsh, and Mary Miller participate in class on the Shawnee Campus. studies. Formerly a pastor in Nebraska, Wiles is now serving as Executive Minister of Rhode Island. He was drawn to Central and found his ministry shaped by a refusal to fall victim to the simplistic sound-bites of popular church culture that speak primarily of numerical growth as a sign of health. He notes that through an intentional and consistent process of disciplined readings, data gathering, challenging conversations, and congregational experiments, he came to see the church as joining God s mission in the community rather than expecting the community to join God s people in the church building. His compelling dissertation on the improvisational potential of church opens doors to exciting new possibilities for healthy discipleship. Another recent graduate, Dr. Pat Hernandez, applies insights from her doctoral study to ministry as National Director, American Baptist Women in Ministry/Transition Ministries. She found that Central s doctoral program contributes to church in its many dimensions by encouraging and supporting the development of healthy leaders. In completing her academic work, Hernandez was prompted to more deeply reflect on my own journey, embrace my createdness in God, be bold in proclaiming my gifts, and seek to clarify my call story, as well as be more intentional about taking a break (celebrating) and connecting with community. President Molly T. Marshall remarked, Central s Doctor of Ministry focuses on congregational health, with special emphasis on leadership and entrepreneurial skills. This combination is proving to be effective preparation for denominational leadership. It is exciting that three of our current doctoral students and two recent graduates are involved in ABC regions in executive leadership. We believe that Central can be a source of renewal as we prepare creative leaders for diverse ministry contexts. While our churches and even our denominations may be small by some standards, the significance of their influence on behalf of the kingdom of God is beyond ordinary measure when leaders bring fresh eyes and holy creativity to their work. Central Seminary is delighted to have a part in preparing gifted leaders such as these

Korean Faculty Gather for Community Development 한국부교수진리트릿, 지역분교의현재와미래논의 God continues to expand the cultural reach of Central as the Korean programs see more growth. With seven sites now and about 300 students, this program continues to help sustain Central's phenomenal growth. While being integrated within the overall life of Central, this community also is working to strengthen the various site locations and Korean speaking faculty. This summer faculty from five of Central Seminary s Korean language class sites gathered for professional development and retreat. These seven faculty members had been in contact with each other online only, until meeting July After a tour of the Shawnee campus and a meeting with Dean Robert Johnson, they travelled to Conception Abbey. The group worked on developing a caring and nurturing faculty community, talked about Central s ethos and the Korean program s current and future landscape, discussed how to develop the local sites and enhance teaching and advising skills, assessed the students learning outcomes, as well as shared observations and insights. Korean Program Director Samuel Park gave information about the current makeup of sites and students and shared plans to develop more sites in several states. Dr. Jay Noh led the discussion about ways to form more systematic and practical learning communities to fit the current sites. The Korean faculty shared their class experiences and stories about their students, and found common ground with regard to difficulties and expectations. They were especially sympathetic to the status of the student as immigrants and that teaching and advising should be done with an understanding of the students perspective. In the midst of silence and chant with the monks of Conception Abbey, the faculty experienced fellowship with God. At meal times and during afternoon Jokgu (Korean foot volleyball), they experienced fellowship with one another. Together they prayed for the development of Central s Korean program and the vision that the people of God can be nurtured biblically and faithfully in order for them to help churches locally and globally to live out the kingdom of God.
