Annual Meeting Minutes January 25, 2015 The 156th meeting of the Algona First Congregational UCC Church was held Sunday, January 25, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. in the church sanctuary. Board Chairman, John Scuffham, called the meeting to order. Don Marine moved to approve the minutes of the Annual Meeting held Jan. 26, Phil Heath seconded, the motion carried. John Scuffham asked for the annual reports of the committees. Pastor s Annual Report: Nothing to add. Evangelism and Outreach Committee: Nothing to add. Christian Education Committee: Nothing to add. Property Committee: Nothing to add. Missions and Memorial Committee: Phil Heath acknowledged that Kris did extra duty this year due to health issues of Phil and Greg and they appreciated that. Women s Fellowship: Nothing to add. Worship and Music Committee: Nothing to add. Endowment Fund Trust: We made about 7%; our benchmark is 6% so we did a little better then the market did as a whole. Royal Nold s passing created the opportunity for 2 new members to the committee. Mahana-Congregational Church Scholarships: Originally we had one million dollars, now we have three million. We did change managers that that has been successful, which has given us about 2% more return then previously. Treasurer s Report: Larry Person shared his information with enthusiasm and a poem Why the Church Treasurer Feels like a Sheep Herder. Projected pledges are up for next year. We are looking at a $125,000 budget for Overall the utilities costs are going up, we continue to follow our plan to use some endowment funds to help with the budget, but increased pledges help. Motion to approve the reports by Don Marine, seconded by Sandy Person. Motion carried. Committee Member Nominations: A few of the committees have reduced members now as their role has become more managers and the rest of the congregation assists as the doers. Board members will continue to serve on the different committees as they have done in the past. The Pastor-Parish Relations committee is formed by 2 Board appointees and 2 pastor appointees and this committee will be appointed at a later date. Chuck West volunteered to step down as Conference representative if someone else will take over this position. Pastor Chris explained 2
that there is now a Recharge Weekend in June and the business meeting of the Conference is now a one-day meeting in October. David Burrow moved to accept the nominated committee members. Pat Billsbourgh seconded. Carried. John Scuffham mentioned that we should be appreciative of what our church has to offer. Our facilities are wonderful, our members are willing to help, and we are a class act. John was given a standing ovation for his 10 years of service as Board member and Chairman. He has assisted several interim ministers and new ministers during his years, which often meant more work for him. He expressed his appreciation for the work of the treasurer, church secretary, church members, and especially the support of his wife, Helen. He also expressed our pleasure in the hiring of Chris Burtnett and his partner, Pam. Pastor Chris s comments: at our Cottage Meetings a conclusion at all of them is that we need to get the word out about all the good things happening at our church (in addition to our Facebook page, our newsletter, radio broadcasts, etc.). He would like to gather and brainstorm ways to do this, if you would like to help be part of a group that discusses this issue, let Chris know. Pastor closed the meeting with a prayer. 6 Annual Church Board President Report 2015 This year started out with the plans for a new handicap accessible bathroom in the church. When the bathroom plans were finalized, it only took fourteen days for church members to donate money for the project. The congregations generous financial support for this true need has made our wish a reality for our members and guests. Our church has always said where no one is a stranger and everyone is welcome. This year, in April, we took a huge step forward when we voted to become an official open and affirming church. Your board works very hard to hold expenses down to meet our budget. What truly amazes me is the amount of money our small congregation gives to help run our church. Each month, I look at the financial reports and wonder how our church members continue to provide enough financial support to pay our bills every month. The board would like to thank Chris and Pam Burtnett for their dedication and hard work; they truly are doing the work of God. I saw a sign the other day that stated: If you think John and Paul were just members of the Beatles, it s time for you to go to church. We all need to welcome and extended our hand to new friends we meet and old friends to come visit some Sunday, you never know they may like what they see and hear and become a member. Thank you to everyone for all the jobs you do around the church, from big to small, including things people never notice you do. Until, we lost Noma ; we just assumed all those little jobs just happened!! Thanks to all for all you did in 2015 to keep our church alive and well!!! Board President Mick Schlievert 4
Pastor s Annual Report I struggle with what the Pastor s Annual report should be. Is it supposed to be statistical? I have read other colleague s reports of that nature. They include statistics such as how many people were counseled, visited at home, hospital visits, funerals, communions to folk at home, care centers, books read etc. I guess those are okay, but statistics can only tell us so much. Should it be an overview of the past year s ministries and activities? It can be, but the reports of our standing committees and organizations do a better job than I ever could of covering all of those. Take the time to read them in this year s report. We ve been busy! Should it set the stage for the coming year? I think there s a place for that, but an annual report s main purpose is to remind us of the ministry we have done in the year just past so that we might reflect upon it, and lift it up to God in celebration as we move forward into a new year of discipleship together. I guess my conclusion is that the Pastor s annual report could include all of the above so here goes. Statistically, 2015 was our first full calendar year in ministry together. I have been your pastor now for 17 months. I have made home, care center, and hospital visits and taken communion to our folk who are not able to be present when we celebrate it here in worship. I led the celebrations of the lives of two beloved members of our congregation who died in I have chaired some meetings, represented our church in the community and take part in the ministerial association, community service groups and organizations. I attended several continuing education events and read books and periodicals to assist me in growing as your pastor and better serving our church and community. It has never been my practice to keep track by exact number of these things and never been part of a congregation that required it. You have trusted that I will do the things that are a part of the pastoral office and I am value that deeply. As you read through the committee reports, you will find a variety of ways that we have been in ministry to one another, our community and our world. From fellowship and potluck events to spiritual growth opportunities, from regular to special worship services, from monthly food pantry collections to special offerings we have reached out to share the good news of Jesus. We have taken bold stands in support for our lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender brothers and sisters and widened our welcome for our differently abled kin with the installation of an accessible restroom in our building. We let our community and world know that we seek and are willing to work for peace for everyone in God s world. We have made clear our intent to be united with others through hosting a day of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. These things may seem small, but they speak loudly what we believe and who we are as part of the Body of Jesus. As we move into a new year in service to God, it is my hope that we will continue the ministries that have been effective and beneficial to our community, the world, and the church as well as being open to the Spirit s movement among us, guiding us to explore new possibilities for ministry that might address the changing times and needs of our brothers and sisters. In order to do that it is my hope that we can, with the help of our Iowa Conference staff, spend some time in intentional evaluation of our ministry together to help strengthen our congregation in what we are doing well, what we might do better, and where our energy may best be focused as we journey into whatever future God might have in store for us. It has been a great year! I look forward to another one ahead. Pastor Chris 5
CHRISTIAN EDUCATION REPORT Christian Education met early this fall to select curriculum for the Sunday School year. We decided to use the One Room Sunday School Curriculum. Sandy, Shelly and Pam taught through January and would like other Church members to teach in the Spring. If you would like to help out please let one of the Committee members know. We have two adult study groups available to anyone interested. The first group is The Seekers and led by Chuck West. They meet on Sunday mornings at 8:30am. The second group meets on the first Wednesday Evenings of month at participants home. Discussions are informal and with snacks. A few of our topics have been on blessings or being blessed and the Lord s Prayer. Pam Burtnett Sandy Person Shelly Terhark EVANGELISM & OUTREACH COMMITTEE ANNUAL REPORT FOR st Congregational UCC Church, Algona Iowa This Committee met each month except in April and December. Pastor Chris - Chair, Helen Scuffham Board Rep., Marilyn Deal IA & FL Rep. and Chuck West Sec. The McClellan Organ Concert on Feb. 15 was financed by a Haggard-Twogood Trust grant. It was planned, organized and promoted by the Committee, aided by Scott Buchanan. Excellent turn-out, well received and the social hour afterwards was a success (Fellowship Comm). A similar concert is planned for. Stopped using pew attendance booklets. Started the ongoing process of upgrading the church s web site, Facebook, membership roster and addresses, radio, newspaper and TV exposure. Frequent discussions on how the church can plan and organize activities and meetings where members and friends feel free to discuss their convictions and concerns about the religious, social and service issues of today. The ten priorities of the Be The Church and our Statement of Purpose are a beginning, with emphasis on love, openness, sharing and respect. 1st Congregational is an officially recognized Open and Affirming congregation. The unisex restroom installed on the main floor adds validity to that claim. Signs at the north entrance will direct those needing a ramp to the entrance on the west side. The Rainbow flag, LGBT symbol, is now part of our literature. New color promotion cards with this emphasis are being prepared for wide distribution. Our participation in Founders Day was greatly expanded this year. Helen planned a Christmas in July display of Nativity scenes provided by church members and friends. It and the free root-beer floats on the west lawn were the main attractions of the church tours. The Nativity display hours were extended that day and open again the following Sunday. Promises and pressures to expand the tours in. New Members Sunday was observed on July 26th when Rebecca Moore, Chris and Pam Burtnett and their four adult children joined 1st Congregational UCC Church in Algona. Marilyn organized and invited the 2015 recipients of the church s Mahana Scholarships to be recognized at the May 25th Sunday service with a social hour that followed. 6
The church s outreach and community service included a special outdoor worship service for the establishment and dedication of a Peace Pole. Helen and John Scuffham made the arrangements for this to be on the National Roster. The community was invited to the Sunday afternoon, Sept. 20th, service on the west lawn of the church. A special offering was taken and $216 was collected and sent to the Carter Center for Peace. A time of fellowship and refreshments followed the service. Plans were made to celebrate the importance of peace each year on World Peace Day. Helen and Chris took Easter lilies and Marilyn and Chuck took Advent poinsettias to our shut-ins and hospital members. All committee members visited our hospitalized and shut-in members. Marilyn, Don Marine and Chris were responsible for weekly updating the lighted outdoor church sign. Pastor Chris has been very active this past year in promoting our church in the Algona community. His weekly Tuesday morning time at the Perky Parrott puts him in touch with individuals who don t know our church. He leads worship services on Sunday afternoons at Good Samaritan and Algona Manor on a regular schedule. He has business cards to share. Chris is working with both funeral homes in Algona to make our facilities more available when needed. These funeral homes can arrange for families not having a local church but needing a place to meet and grieve to use our fellowship hall. Chris has volunteered to conduct funerals for individuals who do not have a pastor to do so. It has been a very busy and good year. We are making progress but we still have much to do to be the church/congregation that Algona needs and we can be. Amen. 7
Property Committee Annual Report In reviewing the Property Committee activity over the past year, much has been accomplished to keep our facilities in working order and to improve them. The Committee has been assisted by members of the congregation to accomplish most tasks and the help is greatly appreciated. Special thanks to Pastor Chris Burnett, Larry Person, and Mick Schlievert who jump in and fixes things on their own. Because our church buildings are older, many repairs crop up and are addressed on an as needed basis. And, because most of our church members are also in the older category we are finding it necessary to hire out jobs that are needed on our facilities. Listed below are many of the issues addressed by the Committee over the past year: City sump pump inspection Sump pump replaced Drains extended for gutters New air conditioner purchased for parsonage to replace broken one Tree Removal, stump removal, and holes in lawn filled and seeded Blinds repaired in conference room Parsonage Chimney Repair by Northwest Iowa Chimney Sweep Lights repaired by Fellowship entry Vent slat repair in church peak Parsonage porch railing re-installed ADA Bathroom project completed Signs purchased for direction to ramp entrance, and ADA bathroom Fence and lattice painted by parsonage Cracks patched in front of sanctuary Leak in bell tower/front entry due to heavy rains, replaced ceiling tiles Old appliances (washer, dryer, and refrigerator) donated to CARE team Key scavenger hunt matched unknown keys to several doors Replaced light bulbs in sanctuary lights On-going projects at this time and projects being considered by the Property Committee include these items: Repair parking area this will depend on City of Algona responsibilities Replace carpeting in the sanctuary, entryways, and parlor Repair/replace Basement windows Repair and paint parsonage porch & railing Shingle parsonage garage roof Replace northeast door (entrance by organ) Determine if clarion chimes are in working order Once again, the Property Committee is very appreciative of all the help from members of the congregation who keep our facility in working order. Thank you to everyone! Holly Filson/Heath Property Committee Chair 8
MISSIONS and MEMORIAL COMMITTEE ANNUAL REPORT 2015 Kris Schlievert, Ginny Buchanan, Greg Buchanan, Phil Heath, and Chris Burnett As a committee, we continue to support the major missions of the UCC as well as local missions including the Kossuth County Food Pantry. These missions focuses included: OCWM, One Great Hour of Sharing, Strengthen the Church, Neighbors in Need, Veterans of the Cross, our local Food Pantry, and adopting the Saunsoci family for Christmas. In addition, monetary support was provided to Olivia Bachman for her travel abroad with People to People. For additional information and an itemized accounting please refer to Kris report. The church s relationship with the Saunsoci family continued this year with a special collection primarily supported by the members of the committee totaling $900 due to unusual hardships brought to our attention midyear. The Committee met three times this year. Pastor Chris continued the tradition of the Sifrit Memorial Service. The Memorial Committee donated money for the end tables in the Parlor. In addition VanBuren Terrance donated a table and chairs. In honoring Noma Buchanan, battery operated candles were purchased for Christmas use and special occasions. Focus this year was to keep the church family aware of our special mission s needs and how that money is used. As always, we wish to thank each of you for your ongoing support of our church s mission and memorial work. Indeed we are blessed beyond belief. It is an honor to be part of such a generous membership who not only talk to the talk but also walk the walk. 13 Women's Fellowship Annual Report 2014 Women's Fellowship is open to all women of the church family. We meet the third Thursday of each month (except January, February, June, July and August) at 2:30 pm in the fellowship hall. Following dessert, a short meeting is held, and often a short program is given. From January until April, the women were tagging items of donated materials from Thistle Do and others for our Trash and Treasure Sale that was held on the last Saturday of April. In September, we held our first fall meeting. It was a casual business meeting with upcoming dates scheduled. Dates were set for Linen and mitten collection for the care team, Trash and Treasure date, Christmas cookie sale and decoration for Christmas. The majority of the year was spent preparing for the April Sale. Julie Buchanan, President 11
Worship & Music Committee The committee met three times over the course of the year. The biggest change in worship was an increase in the frequency of communion. We will now be celebrating the Lord s Supper on the first Sunday of each month. Various minor changes intended to improve the flow of the worship service were also discussed and are in the process of being implemented. We had a couple of opportunities for special music this year. Among these, a generous donation provided us with special music during Advent, and we expect to also have a vocalist with us during church in early February. We continue to have good feedback from the community on our sermon broadcasts, which air on KLGA each Sunday shortly after 11am. Members who miss a service are also reminded that the sermons are archived on the church website algonaucc.org. -David M. 15 ENDOWMENT FUND TRUST 2015 Annual Report The primary purpose of the Endowment Trust is to provide support for the Church now and in the future. Our current church members are acutely aware of the benefit of the Endowment Fund as Endowment earnings are essential in supplementing the church budget. The Trustees of the Endowment Fund are Mick Schlivert, Larry Person, Marilyn Deal, and Rev. Chris Burtnett. An Investment Advisory Committee manages the investments in the Trust. Members include Chairperson Gregg Buchanan, Don Marine, Arlen Benscotter, and Ted Herbst. Gregg provides dedicated service, sound investment expertise, resulting in a positive gain in a year resulting in many losses. The Endowment Trust ended 2015 with a balance of $393, Gregg s report is as follows: 2015 was a challenging year for the Endowment portfolio as the markets were generally negative. We had a total return of 2.82% which is feeble compared to the last 7 years but is a strong return in these markets. By way of comparison, the average of our benchmarks returned -2.37% and the Mahana portfolio returned -.18%. Our investment gain was $11,339 but we drew $20,000 from the account so there was a net reduction of $8,661. It was a difficult year to make money in almost all markets. Here are some examples drawn from Morningstar data on the categories of mutual finds it follows. In U.S. stock funds, it follows 9 categories and 8 of those lost money. It follows 17 categories of allocation funds (mixtures of equities and bonds) and all 17 lost money. These would be the closest categories to our portfolio. Out of 15 foreign stock categories, 8 lost money. Even fleeing equities and going into bonds was not safe as 10 of the 16 bond categories lost money. Some sectors really got clobbered. Latin America equities were down about 30%. Almost all types of commodities lost 10-30%. Utilities have been a traditional safe haven for some dividends with limited risk but they lost about 10%. It was a trying year even for the elite. Hedge funds had been hailed as the bastion for geniuses to invest for the wealthy. They averaged a -4% return and some of them closed their doors. Warren Buffett s company dropped 11.5%. So after 7 good years, this one falls in the could have been worse category donations to the Endowment Fund Trust totaled $ Contributors included the following: Russ and Ginny Buchanan, Marilyn Deal, John and Kathy Maxwell, and John and Helen Scuffham. Please consider making a gift to the Trust, either by cash or stock gifts during your lifetime, by an appropriate provision in your will, or by transferring ownership of a life insurance policy to the Trust. All donations, from a few dollars to thousands of dollars, are important to the Church s long term financial health. Each contribution generates income to support and maintain the church each year. The Board of Directors authorized the treasurer to withdraw up to $19,700 in, if needed. The Endowment Trust is vital to the financial security of the church. If you have any questions regarding the Endowment Trust or want to make a contribution, you can contact any Trustee or Investment Committee member. Respectfully submitted, Marilyn Deal, Chairperson 14
MAHANA-CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION 2015ANNUAL REPORT The Mahana-Congregational Church Scholarship Foundation was established in 1992 after the death of Gladys Mahana. Gladys left the bulk of her estate, nearly $1 million, to establish a scholarship foundation. The Church members at the time accepted the responsibility to administer the Foundation. Gladys Will provided for meaningful scholarships that truly help the student recipients. The Will also outlined the following criteria for awarding scholarships to Algona High School graduates in obtaining a post high school education: financial need; prior academic performance (grade point average); standardized testing (ACT scores); recommendations from instructors, school administrators and counselors; personal history; planned course of study; prior demonstrated citizenship and potential for leadership; and personal interviews of the candidates. Mick Schlivert, Larry Person, Marilyn Deal, and Rev. Chris Burtnett are the Directors of the Mahana Foundation. The Endowment Trust Investment Advisory Committee assists the Directors reviewing the investments of the Foundation. Mark Salzinger of Salzinger, Sheaff, Brock is manager of the Foundation investments. The management fee arranged for the Algona money Mark manages is significantly lower than other management firms charged. The value of the account as of closing on December 31, 2015 was $1,429, A financial report appears on a separate page following this report. The yearly recognition service was held honoring the memory of Gladys Mahana with scholarship recipients and their family members in attendance. The recipients spoke on how the scholarship impacted their lives. Members met the recipients at a reception following the service. The Board continues to work closely with the high school counselors and representatives of other scholarship foundations, in an effort to make an equitable distribution of scholarship funds. All the major scholarship foundation awarded $3,500 scholarships. The Mahana Foundation scholarships are for one year and all recipients must reapply to be considered for subsequent years. The Board follows very closely the Selection Committee s recommendations when awarding scholarships. For the academic year, the Board authorized 23 scholarships. The scholarship disbursements totaled $80,500. The Foundation met the required 5% average distribution of assets over a ten-year period. The scholarship recipients, some attending graduate school, included the following AHS graduates: Kadi Becker Dylan Cink Megan Eden Landon Jergenson Trevor Loeschen Shelbi Schadendorf Alexander Trunkhil Chandler Wilhelmi Nik Blumer Katelyn Connick Levi Goodman Autumn Kramer Alyssa Mechler Michael Schorpp Bekka Voss Justine Yeoman Jeffery Buchanan Kaeli Davis Amanda Hamilton Katlyn Loeschen Carson Nickel Zane Torpy Braeden Wilhelmi Members of the congregation uplifted these scholars in their prayers during the year. 16
All recipients expressed deep appreciation for their scholarships. Some of the notes the Foundation received from recipients included the following: It is with great pleasure and thankfulness that I accept your scholarship. It will be very helpful in reaching my goal of becoming a teacher... Bekka Voss Thank you for helping me further my education as a recipient of your scholarship. I m looking forward to my year at ILCC this fall. Thanks so much for this opportunity! Landon Jergenson Thank you so much for the scholarship! It will greatly help pay for my tuition at DMACC! Michael Schorpp... It will be a huge help with school - - Thank you so much! Braden Wilhelmi... please give the committee my thanks again. God bless and have a good day! Jeff Buchanan I want to thank you along with the Awards Panel for the great honor of being chosen for the Mahana-Congregational Church Scholarship for this upcoming school year. This means so much to me, and I am incredibly grateful for this honor, especially being a graduate student, the award means that much more to me. I am excited to further my education at the University of NebraskaLincoln next fall.... Katelyn Connick I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart! It is such an honor to be able to accept such a blessing in order to help with my studies!... This grant will help tremendously with my tuition and supplies required for my major of Graphic Design.... God Bless, Chandler Wilhelmi I would like to thank everyone involved with this Foundation for choosing me as a recipient for this scholarship. This means so much to me and will give me the opportunity to place all of my focus on education rather than money. Thank you so much to everyone. Zane Tarpy I greatly appreciate all your prayers and financial support as I look forward to my next semester of law school... Amanda Hamilton Gladys Mahana s original $1,000,000 gift has provided over 540 scholarships to Algona High School graduates, pursuing technical, undergraduate and graduate degrees, who received approximately $1.64 million in the past 23 years. Awarding the scholarships is only possible with the Church s commitment to administering the Foundation and the dedication and hard work of committee members. A special thank you goes to the members of the Selection Committee, who work without public recognition, within a narrow time window to complete their work. It takes a Congregation to administer the Mahana Scholarship Foundation! This ministry has made a significant impact on the lives of Algona High School graduates since the first scholarships were given in Respectfully Submitted, Marilyn A. Deal, Chairperson 17

FELLOWSHIP COMMITTEE The Fellowship Committee continues to host Fellowship Nights on the second Wednesday of the month. In January we ordered Pizza and the boys played the girls in Pictionary. Father Taylor s birthday was celebrated in February with dinner, cupcakes and a reading of Margaret Durant s play. Everyone brought a white elephant from home in March and following dinner, we played Bingo and awarded the fabulous prizes to each winner. The remaining items went to the Trash and Treasure sale. For Maundy Thursday in April, a Tenebrae worship service was held around the table, following a soup supper. May was finished off with beef burgers and the planting of Noma s geraniums along the walk. After summer recess, we started up again in September with Pastor Chris grilling a delicious smoke pork loin on the lawn followed by s mores over an open fire. In October the group serenaded friends with Halloween carols, followed by pizza back at Fellowship Hall. In November, a find the lock scavenger hunt was held following dinner. Assorted keys that had been collected were matched up with doors/locks, and candy prizes were awarded. We visited the nursing homes in December to sing our favorite Christmas carols, and came back to Fellowship Hall to warm up with soup. Potlucks were held on the 4th Sunday of each month - including the Annual Meeting, Palm Sunday Brunch, the fall service in Call Park, and Thanksgiving. Friends bring a dish to share, as well as their table settings. Fellowship Committee Members: Sandy Harmes-Buchanan Becky Marine Julie Buchanan 19
