1 WEST HILL CEMETERY:

2 Selected Early American Residents As noted elsewhere on this website, some of the earliest residents shared family connections. Back in those less technological times, people didn t necessarily move away from where they began life and with fewer distractions, family meant so much more to other family members. For example, many of the occupants of our oldest sections can be linked together through marriage and thereby blood. A few of those interrelationships are outlined below. These paragraphs only suggest relationships, a genealogist would have to do a more thorough search to verify the information. Deacon Thomas Mower Four generations of the Mower family are at the northwest corner of the cemetery. Deacon Thomas and wife Phebe provided the start of the family in this location. Their son Ezra and his wife Sarah Webster have a presence there, too, and two of their children are in the lot as well. Daughter Ann Mower Gale, wife of Hawley Gale, and son Dennison Mower are the third generation in the family plot, a few of their children make up the fourth generation. Deacon Thomas Mower came from Jaffrey, New Hampshire and settled in nearby Berlin around Apparently he saw better opportunity in nearby Barre and bought and settled on a farm there a year later. At about 1890, E. T. Mower, a descendant, owned the old family homestead. Child did not mention Mrs. Mower s first name, only that Thomas had married a Miss Raymond. Her marble tombstone has become so illegible, her information may be lost. It may be possible that she had the first name, Phebe. Confusion can be added to the mix with the small stone for Mrs. Phebe Mower, located to the far west of the family plot where grandson Dennison s family is located. Deacon Thomas and his wife had three daughters and a son, Ezra, his family can be found to the west of the parents. 1 Thomas moved to Barre before 1810 and served during the War of The deacon married Phebe Thomas, the daughter of Lieutenant Nathaniel and Esther Perkins Thomas of Rindge, New Hampshire. They married on Sep 3, 1792, she passed away on April 19, 1810 in Barre. 3 1 Gazetteer Of Washington County, Vt , Compiled and Published by Hamilton Child, Edited By William Adams. 3 Son Ezra and his wife Sally Webster had eight children, they buried four of them on West Hill with Ezra s parents. No stones have been identified for Ezra and Sally, they may or may not be in the cemetery. Ezra s daughter Ann Mower Gale, wife of Hawley Gale is also on the north end of West Hill lots along with two natural children and an adopted daughter. Ezra s son Denison and family occupy the west end of the lot. He is there with first wife Amanda, his second wife Lorinda is on the stone with a birth date but not death date. On the side, George, son of Dennison and Amanda, is listed. Small tablets for Amanda [A.M.] and Denison [D.S.M.] are located to the right of the family monument, a small stone tablet for George [G.F.M.] on the left. Another Mower, Denison S., and his wife Amanda, also have a family lot at West Hill. Amanda passed away in 1859 at the age of 24 and is in the family lot along with the couple s son George, he died in 1857 at age 5 months. Denison married a second time to Lorinda Gale, mentioned elsewhere in this document. Calvin Smith Calvin s residence provided the place where the residents of Wildersburgh gathered to discuss changing the name of the town to something a bit friendlier and shorter. They gathered there on the 3rd of September in 1793 to select a new name for the town to be presented to the Vermont legislature. Calvin came north from Wildersburgh, Mass., becoming one of the very early settlers. He built the family home and remained there until his death. According to legend, the famous fight between Sherman and Thompson took place in Smith s barn. He married three times, his first wife, a Sherman, had seven children with him, his second wife, Mrs. West, two more. Calvin married Mrs. Wright as his third wife. Stones can be found for two of Calvin s wives, but not for Calvin of his third wife. 4 4 Gazetteer Of Washington County, Vt , Compiled and Published by Hamilton Child, Edited By William Adams. 4 Paul Ross Paul and his family have a lot to the left of the entry gate. He is there with his two wives, Olive and Tryphena Chandler. In the adjoining lot, Stephen, son of Paul and Tryphena, is with his family. Stephen has the middle name Chandler, referring to his mother s maiden name. Stephen s death certificate identified him as a cooper, he died of heart disease. His wife Charlotte came from the Browning family. (see Wilson Cemetrey) The Enos Town Row Two generations: Towne, Enos (died Jun 16, 1813 at 53 [1760]) father Towne, Thomas M. (died May 7, 1867 at 83 [1784]) son Towne, Enos, Col. (born Jun ) son Enos TOWNE came to Barre from Hillsboro, N. H., about 1798, and brought his wife and a family of small children with him, and settled on the farm where Mr. J. P. LADD now lives, on road 52. His first crop was corn, planted in Indian style, after burning off the brush among the logs and stumps. His son Thomas M., the eldest of a family of eight children, married Jerusha DIX [in West Hill] and settled on the farm where his son Jude now lives, and where he spent most of his long life. He died at South Barre, May 7, 1867, aged eighty-two years. Mr. and Mrs. TOWNE were parents of ten children, two of whom died in infancy and six are now living. 5 5 From the Gazetteer of Washington County, Vermont , page 156; and a website: freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~walkersj/towne2.html

5 A quick trip through the vital records on the internet suggest Thomas and Colonel Enos to be sons of Enos and Jerusha. The records showed the sons as born in New Hampshire, young Enos in Hillsborough, son of Enos and Elizabeth. Thomas married Jerusha Dix, daughter of Benjamin and Anna Dix, her parents have a lot over in Maplewood Cemetery. The Hillary and Peck Families A quick trip through the Latter Day Saints genealogy site, clues emerge about the occupants of the south side of the cemetery. Three children of Jonathan and Jane Peck can be found at the center of the remaining stones in the southern most row. According to the records, Jonathan married Jennie (Jane) Hillary in Jane appears as both Jane and Jennie in the records. Located to the west of the children, two veterans, both named Hillary can be found. Another Hillary entered the picture at the birth of Orinda in 1807 to John and Mehitable Hillary. When the time came, Orinda married Oren Carr, their son Robert has the eastern most stone in the line. Another child born to John and Mehitable, Luther, would share his name with one of the children on the center stone, young Luther Peck. John Herrick In his article, Remarkable Deaths in Barre, Vermont from its Settlement until 1826, C. Horton offered the story of the demise of John Herrick. Local innkeeper, Ira Day, also owned the local grist mill. On June 28, 1808, and after an extended period of rain, local floodwaters suddenly swept the occupied mill downstream. As the mill left its foundation in the rush of water, it turned overall tossing the occupants about. Some managed to escape, others not so lucky. Some of the injured rode out the flood within the building, Mr. Herrick, on the other hand, apparently took a substantial beating by logs and debris in the stream. He lingered on for almost a month until the 23rd of July. 6 Nested in the vital records, a John Herrick married Deborah Pettengill. West Hill s John Herrick can be found within a line of stones anchored on the ends by the Pettengill family. To his left, Jean, wife of Nath L. can be found, but not Nathaniel. Jean is from the generation before John. Way to the right is Dolly Pettengill, similar in age to John, and Meribah Robards. Meribah could be from a generation before Jean, her relationship to the Pettengill family is not apparent. 6 Webpage: genealogytrails.com/ver/washington/deaths/remarkable_deaths.html

6 Gale Family The Gale family at West Hill traces back to Isaac Gale and his wife Sally Page Gale. Isaac, born in Bradford, became a farmer in Orange, Vermont, and then to Barre. He and Sally lived out their days in Barre. Isaac served during the War of 1812 and received a land warrant for 160 acres for that service under an act passed in Two children of Isaac and Sally are at West Hill, Hawley and Lorinda. Lorinda marred Denison Mower and rests in the Mower lot. According to records, she died at age 97 from complications after she fractured a hip. Hawley also married a Mower, Ann. He and Ann resided in Barre after their marriage and lived on a farm. The couple lost two children, Wilbur and Mary are in the Gale family plot with their parents. 7 Gale Family Records in England and the United States, George Gale, LL. D., Wisconsin, 1866
