3 Notes on the James Whitlock Family The first evidence I have on James Whitlock is the 1800 census. He is living in Surry County, North.Carolina "viththree sons under the age often (Bowen, John and James) and one daughter under the age of ten. There is also another woman living "viththem between the ages of 16 and 26. She would be too old to be a daughter, she is probably a younger sister of James. By 1810, James and Nancy have added four more sons (Thomas, Rolen, Samuel and probably D P) and another daughter (Rebecca). They also now have another man and woman living with them who are between the ages of 26 and 45. Additionally, there is an older woman living "viththem who is over 45 (this is probably Nancy Bowen's mother, Rachel, who's second husband, Philip Howard, had died in 1808). In the 1813 tax list of Surry County, it shows that James owns 318 acres. Below is an deed abstract from State of North Carolina; Surry County Deed book N, page 485 Date of deed August 20, 1814; Date recorded or proved February term 1818 From: James Whitlock of Surry County, North Carolina To: Ephraim Padgett of Surry County, North Carolina Description: 100 acres (In Ephraim Padgetts will, he refers to this land as the land he bought from Bowen Whitlock, so I would presume this is the parcel of land that Bowen inherits from his grandfather Thomas Bowen, see the will below.) Consideration: 100 pounds Witnesses: Jas. Parks and J. Whitlock James Whitlock (seal) By 1820, James and Nancy have added two more daughters. Bowen has moved to Warren County, Tennessee. Another son is either on his own or has passed away. All the daughters still appear to be at home. By 1830, Bowen and Rowland are living in Lincoln County, Tennessee. James W., Samuel and Thomas are all living in Iredell County, North Carolina. The only son left at home is probably D P. However, all the daughters are still at home. By the 1840 census, Rowland is still in Lincoln County, Tennessee. James has moved to Wilkes County, North Carolina. Samuel is still in Iredell County, North Carolina and Thomas has moved to Davie County, North Carolina. John is farming next to his father in Surry County, North Carolina. I can not fmd Bowen anyway. Two of the daughters are gone. Probably the two daughters who have left the home got married. The possibilities include the following Whitlock women that I have marriage records on: Elizabeth Whitlock marries an Iredell Jackson in Surry County on May 30, 1831; Elizabeth A. Whitlock marries an L.G.c. Butler in SUfi)' County on November 22, 1837; Caroline Whitlock marries an Thomas N. Chamberlain in Sufi)' County on Dec 20, 1849; Charlotte Whitlock marries a William Le"vis in Y adkin County on April 5, However, one remains who is about 40 and Rebecca also remains at home (she does not get married until May 28, 1841). James dies between the 1840 census and the 1850 census. His wife goes and lives,vith their daughter Rebecca and her husband, Robert Cheek, in Alamance County, North Carolina where she died in She is buried in S1.Pauls Lutheran Church Cemetary. 165

4 Below is the 1800 will of Thomas Bowen. He was Nancy Whitlock's father. In the name of God Amen. I Thomas Bowen of Surry County and State of North Carolina being weak in body and sound in mind and memory and calling to remembrances the fraility of mortality and that it is appointed onto men once to die do constitute and make this my Last Will and Testament hereby revoking and disannulling all and every will or wills by me heretofore made. And first I commend my soul to God who gave it and my body to the ground to be buried in a christian manner and as touching my worldly goods with which it hath pleased God to bless me I will them in the following manner Viz after my lawful debts are paid I will and desire that two thirds of my Estate real and personal be given to Bowen Whitlock as soon as he is of age and to remain in care of my wife Sarah Bowen until that period. the other third I give to my wife Sarah Bowen to used by her as she thinks proper forever and further I do constitute and ordain James Parks and William Coleman the Executors of this my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have set my hand and seal this 19th of September Witnesses: James Whitlock, Richard Green and Agnes Minish Proven: November Seesion 1800 by James Whitlock The children: Bowen Whitlock served as an Ensign in the War of 1812 for the state of North Carolina. Moved to Warren County, Tennessee by 1820 and then Lincoln County, Tennessee where he is noted in the 1830 census. I can [rod nothing on him after that. John Whitlock stays in Surry County where he marries a Sybilla Walker and works as a miller. They have only one child that survived, Alexander Whitlock. James Whitlock Jf. (See his family sheet) L Thomas Whitlock marries a Temperance Holeman and moves to Davie County, North Carolina where he works as a carpenter and they live into their 70's. Rolen Whitlock moves to Lincoln County, Tennessee where he is listed by his brother Bowen in the 1830 census. He has at least six children and is still living in Lincoln County by the 1850 census. Samuel Whitlock marries a Theney Bowles and moves to Ohio. Rebecca Whitlock marries a Robert Cheek and after her father, James, dies, her mother Nancy comes and lives with them in Alamance County, North Carolina. D P Whitlock moves to Allen County, Kentucky by the 1850 census. Below is the 1808 will of Phillip Howard. He was the step father of Nancy Whitlock. I Philip Howard of the County of Surry and State of Nor1h Carolinia being weak and low in body, but of perfect mind and memory thanks be to God for the same; and knowing that it is appointed for all men to die do make and ordain this to be my last will and testament, and first I do recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God 1hatgave it, and my body to the Ear1hto be buried in a Christian like manner, and as touching my worldly Estate wherewith it ha1hpleased God to bless me wi1h,i give and dispose of in 1hefollowing manner. Imprimis: It is my will and desire that all the land I possess and live on and adjoining thereto including the Island, the whole is said to contain 346 acres be the same more or less be sold by my Executors hereafter named whenever either three of my sons, viz Samuel, John, Philip, and Benjamin consents thereto and the monies arising therefrom to be equally divided between my four sons above named after paying my son William two hundred dollars out of 1hemoney arising from 1hesale 1hereof to be paid as soon as they receive the monies for 1hesale of said land which said sum of two hundred dollars I give to my son William and his heirs, But in case three of 1hemshould not agree and sell1he land as aforesaid Its my desire that Philip should have 1heuse of the new field he cleared to himself until it is sold, and the other three to use or occupy the old plantation, and if they do not sell it all. Each of them are to pay their brother William the sum of fifty dollars each within four years after my decease. Item: I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Sarah the feather bed and furniture that I usually sleep on to her and her heirs forever. Item: I give and bequeath to each of my sons, to wit Samuel, John, Philip, and Benjamin a feather bed and furniture (meaning that all the furniture after my wifes bed is fixed off be equally divided between 1hefour boys. Item: I give and bequeath to my son Benjamin a two year old grey mare to him and his heirs forever. Item: I give and bequeath to my son William all my wearing clothes, all my books of every description, a certain blue rug and my walking cane to him and his heirs forever. Item: I give to each of my grand-sons (children of my son William) viz. James, John, Philip, William and David Hampton Howard five dollars in money each. Item: I give to Le\vis Bryan and Nancy Bryan (children of my deceased daughter Betsy Bryan) five dollars each in money. Item: I give to each of my six grand-daughters, children of my daughter Sallie Holliman, five dollars each in money, mind there are six of them. Item: I give to each of my two grand daughters (children of my daughter Susannah Douthite) five dollars each in money. Item: I give to each of the eight children of Nancy Whitlock (grand children of my present wife) three dollars each in money to be paid to their father James Whitlock in trust for said children. Item: It is my will and desire that all my negroes, horses, cattle, hogs, sheep, and crops now growing and all the rest and residue of my Estate that is not heretofore bequeathed of what nature or kind sources of every description be sold to the highest bidder and the monies arising therefrom and the out standing debts collected after paying all my just debts and funeral expenses and the small 167

6 legacies above bequeathed be equally divided between my beloved wife Sarah, my daughters Sally and Sucky and the children of my daughter Betsy Bryan, they the children of Betsy to be considered as entitled to one fourth part thereof only to them and their heirs forever. Lastly, I do appoint my sons Philip and Benjamin Executors to this my last will and testament, ratifying this and no other to be the same. In testimony whereof I do hereunto set my hand and seal the day and year above written.
