14 .... _... THE COMMANDMENTS. What are the Ten Commandments and what do they teach?. The Ten Commandments contan the essence of the dutes of man. They remnd us of the kndness of God who s a zealous God. They demand reverence for Hm and observance of Hs holy day. They teach us our duty towards our parents towards the lves and happness the property and honor of our fellow-men. They warn us to pre~erve our soul from greed and e1vy that we may rejoce n the good that falls to the lot of our neghbor. THE FRST COMMANDMENr: " AM THE LORD THY GOD beng the ntroducton to the Decalogue contans the cardnal truth of our fath namely that there s only One God governng the unverse v1hose la1s we must obey and to whose commands we must adhere. Ths law prescrbes every knd of dolatry and everythng s dolatry that draws us from the reat sprtual God of srael. We must not bow the head or bend the knee nor worshp before any creature of Hs h~nd be t ever 80 powerful for to God alone belongs our soul. The Cotton States Exposton brought thousands of vstors to the young cty. On January 31 of that year the 27th Annual Conventon of the Amercan Womens Suffrage Assocaton was held wth Mss Susan B. Anthony as speaker. On August 9 the Broad Street vaduct was completed. Yet a stll more sgnfcant event was to take place that would cast ts nfluence on the thrvng metropols for many years to come. On September Dr. Davd Marx arrved n Atlanta to become rabb of the growng Hebrew Benevolent Congregaton. Steppng from the tran at the old Unon Staton the 23 year old mnster fell n love wth the bustlng cty that had called hm from hs rabbnate at Temple Emanuel n Brmngham Ala. Somehow the youthful clergyman felt at once that hs destny was nter-woven wth the fate of ths brave communty that only a few years before had rsen from the ashes of the cvl war. The young rabb was gven a warm and hearty welcome by the members of hs new congregaton and ther Chrstan neghbors. He mmedately set out on hs dutes and hs nfluence for good was soon felt not only among hs own consttutents but throughout the entre cty. From the very begnnng hs nterests and devoton transcended the boundares of hs congregaton and encompassed every worthwhle undertakng n the communty. Wthn a short tme Atlanta had come to know and love Dr. Davd Marx and as the years passed ths affecton and esteem was to grow and deepen. The Hebrew Benevolent Temple was located then at the corner of Garnett and Forsyth Streets n a towerng structure bult n Prevous to that tme the congregaton whch was formed n 1867 had conducted ts relgous servces n rented halls and prvate homes. 21 use we 4 When Dr. Marx became ts sprtual leader the Temple congrega ton numbered about ffty members. The populaton of Atlanta con tnued to ncrease however and the congregaton soon outgrew ts quarters. Under Dr. Marxs leadershp plans were made for a new buldng and by 1900 a suffcent sum had been rased to secure optons on sutable stes. A plot of land at the comer of Pryor and Rchardson Streets was selected and constructon began mmedately. On Frday evenng September the mpressve new Temple was dedcated before a large and dstngushed gatherng that flled the edfce to overflowng. Hundreds unable to gan admttance wated reverently outsde. The new buldng provded ample oppor tunty for the congregatons steady growth and expanson. Specal quarters were provded for the relgous school whch Dr. Marx had fostered and developed. n the meantme on October the popular young relgous leader had marred Mss Eleanor Rosenfeld daughter of Abraham and Emly Rosenfeld poneer settlers n ths cty and on January ther son Davd was born. Dr. Marx contnued n ever ncreasng measure to devote hs treless energes to the mprovement of hs congregaton and the betterment of manknd. Under hs nspred drecton the Temple gradually assumed a poston of leadershp among southern Jewry and Dr. Marxs repu taton and scope of nfluence constantly wdened. Durng he became an edtoral wrter for the "Jewsh Amercan" publshed n Detrot. n 1908 he was apponted to the edtoral board of "Young srael" and n 1907 he was made a specal wrter for the Atlanta Journal. From hs pulpt he was the organzng force n the Atlanta Councl of Jewsh Women the Temple Ssterhood and Brotherhood. He took keen delght n hs work wth chldren and under hs gudance the relgous school was constantly expanded and mproved. Wth most of ts members havng moved to the north sde of Atlanta the Hebrew Benevolent Congregaton n 1928 began to plan for a new and larger buldng n a more sutable neghborhood. An approprate Ste at the corner of Peachtree Road and Sprng Street was chosen for the new edfce whch was to be one of the most mposng temples n the country. n due tme constructon was completed and on October the Temple was dedcated to "the worshp of God and the servce of humanty." The three-day exercses brought to Atlanta relgous leaders of all faths from many parts of the country. Smultaneously Dr. Marx and the Temple had reached ther zenth and together they contnued ther march of progress. The late Dudley Gla ss dstngushed journalst and lfe-long frend of Dr. Marx wrtng n the Atlanta Consttuton of January called the honored rabb "a human encyclopeda a phlosopher and humorst never caustc or pedantc yet one of the most erudte persons have ever known."
