Notes on Angelet Elizabeth Angalette TURNEY Arkansas Democrat Sunday May 6, 1951 "AUNT ANN" CELEBRATES - Clinton - One of Van Buren county's oldest citizens, Mrs. Angelet Elizabeth Thomas, celebrated her 95th birthday recently in the home of her son, J. A. "Jim" Thomas, mayor of Clinton. Four generations were present for the occasion: "Aunt Ann," as she is popularly known, at center; Mr. Thomas, at left; his daughter, Mrs. Floy Berkowitz, right; and her young son, Jim Bill, standing. Also present for the day were her daughters, Mrs. Pearl Williams, Pacific Grove, Calif., and Mrs. Mollie Caplinger, Fordyce. ] The article continues: "Aunt Ann" was born at Higden Van Buren county, April 16, 1856, the daughter of the late Abraham Turney and Amanda Gray Turney, both of whom were born in that same neighborhood. She was married May 19, 1872, to Frank Thomas, a Confederate veteran, who was a Methodist minister and a doctor. She is the mother of 13 children, 11 of whom lived to maturity, and nine of whome are still living. "Aunt Ann" has vivid recollections of some of the events of the Civil War. She remembers that her father was in the Army and deserted long enough to come home when her little sister died. She can tell detail about a trip her mother and two neighbor women took to Little Rock from Higden, in an ox wagon, to see her father who was very ill with some kind of fever. The three women, five small children, and two neighbor boys almost grown, who were taken along to drive and take care of the team, made the trip in one wagon. The trip took more than three days and they camped out at night. When time came to come home her father was not well enough for her mother to leave him, so she sent the children back with the other women to stay with their grandparents until she returned.

Notes on James Neal James and brother John moved west in the 1820's. They first went to Alabama and then to Tennessee where they bought land to establish a cotton plantation. James' sister, Mary Neal Timberlake, and her family followed. James, his brothers, sister and the relatives of his sister-in-law, Elizabeth Fox Neal, were all slave owners of moderate wealth. They had taken slaves with them and had money to buy farmland suitable for growing cotton/crops. James wrote letters to his brother, Aaron (as seen in the Neal Collection at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill) describing his life in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He wrote on topics such as: land speculation, farming, local politics, dancing and public entertainment. He mentioned his thoughts on black musicians., law and order and business opportunities. Letter dated 29 December 1826, James wrote to Aaron after moving to Fayette County, Tennessee. He wrote that his slaves sent their love to their mother and the rest of the family back in Franklin County, North Carolina. In the collection mentioned above, there is a letter dated 3 September 182 from one of the slaves living with James, Sims Neal, who wrote of his love to James' mother and family. He wrote how he had purchased a tract of land. The collections mentions how usual this was considering his legal status as a slave. Letter - 15 April 1829, James wrote about a trip to New Orleans. He observed that "blacks were much better treated... than I had expected'. He wrote about selling a slave who was a problem and how he worked as a clerk on a Mississippi River steamboat. He also mentioned romances between his slaves, marriages which were unofficial and divorces, cotton prices. Notes for JAMES NEAL: Father had a brother, James, who apparently went to Oklahoma and Kansas at about the same time as father did and settled in Oklahoma. We visited him once when I was about 4 or 5 years old. I believe the name of the town where he lived was Stillwater, or Stillwell, or something like that. (Stillwater) I know he lived there for years and raised a family there with his second wife. He also had a family from his marriage with a first wife. Three daughters, Hope, Laura and Joy, and a son, Oscar. Hope married an attorney by the name of Blood, I think Herbert was his given name, They lived in Wichita, Kansas when we moved there in Oscar lived for years in an Oklahoma town--it may have been Blackwell or perhaps Winfield, I'm not sure. He raised a family of several children there, Ruth Allee James and brother John moved west in the 1820's.
