2 Page 2 Mayor s Desk By: Dan Wedemeier Grump s Grumblings By: Garylee Thurm Miss Comments By: Madison Matthias Hi Everyone! Once again, it's time for a Mayors Corner article! Where does time go? Some of you may have received a notice from Steve Aiello regarding some tree or bush issues. We are trying to stay ahead of this project to save on our garbage truck and also our snow removal equipment. Some of the concerned areas are for trees and bushes that are overgrown and hanging over sidewalks. These are obvious areas of concern and are just good common sense areas to protect walkers and bike riders. If you are unable to take care of these problems the city will get it done and charge the property owner. I assure you that the service the city uses is reasonable and we charge just what they charge us. If you have any questions, please call Lois at the City Hall. Members of the City Council and I toured the railroad property, along the bike trail, on the way to the sewer plant to look at progress already done there and to get ideas for further plans. We were also able to get a good look at the two rocks available for the Bremer County Freedom Rock. The other reason for the tour was to get a good look at our sewer plant and the railroad property so we could understand how that would affect upgrades to the sewer plant. Jim, Barney and I met with engineers to discuss options/plans to upgrade our sewer plant and having that fit in the area we have, while providing the best solution for the dollars that will be spent. These ideas were also discussed with the City Council while visiting the sewer plant. I believe this was time well spent and gave us all a good hands on perspective of what the city has going on in that corner of town. We have a long way to go with these projects but we have a good start. We will keep you all informed every step of the way. The City Council also approved a new appointment to the Fire Department. Our new fireman is Brent Miller. Congratulations Brent and Welcome! Another item the City Council has been discussing for a couple months is replacing the city tractor. The council has decided to replace it with a wheel loader. We all think it will be better and well suited for what city needs are and will last much longer than a tractor loader. The city will be trying to sell the tractor and some of the attachments. Please contact me or Lois, at the City Hall, if you are interested or if you have any questions about the equipment. REMINDER.. Leaf burning is permitted till November 15th. Please be courteous of the wind and of your neighbors when burning. You can always haul them to the sewer plant to our compost pile. I would also like to welcome Pastor Matthew Moss to. Pastor Moss has moved into the St. Paul s parsonage, across from the park. He has been installed as pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Klinger and St. Paul's Lutheran Church in. He is a young, single (for now - he has a girlfriend) tall, slender, blonde guy. So, if you see Pastor Moss around town, tell him Hi! and join us in welcoming him to our community. REMINDER.. City elections are coming up on Tuesday, November 5th so please get out and vote. The city is continuing with street repairs, street sweeping, sewer pipe lining and other normal maintenance projects that we do annually. I am also working with the city electrician to update the city street lights on Main Street with new improved bright LED lights. We have been trying out different types of LED lights throughout town to find the type that works best for us. Good Luck!..To all of our local area sports teams as they soon begin tournament time. This is the favorite time of the year for many of us. Keep safe and enjoy this beautiful fall season! Dan Wedemeier, Mayor Here I am, again. My, how the last month flew by; when you are busy that makes it fly. I had an entry in the Cattle Congress craft exhibit, but there will be no more. Their format is ridiculous; no matter how many excellent items there are, only one blue, red, and white ~ no matter how many entrees there are. If it deserves a blue, award it. No limit on the number of ribbons awarded. I happen to know one of the board members as he is a member of the Woodworkers Club. Yes, I did voice my opinion. On a bright note, I hope some of you were able to enjoy my wood display at the library. The Roy Clark concert got cancelled due to illness. As far as I know, it won't be rescheduled. You had the option of applying your ticket to another show or a refund. I got a real down-to-earth butt kicking, and it wasn't done by a person. My brother and I removed the old steel roof on the pole building at the farm. Shortly after we got started, we got to thinking maybe we should have let the contractor that was putting on the new steel do it. We felt like we had our butts kicked, but we survived. I did make a trip to Waukon to fish the pond, but it was a murky mess and also windy. That was a double shot against me being a fly-fisherman. I did manage to catch several bass. It's not about the fish; it's the fishing that's important. If you catch a fish, that is a bonus. I was at the Decorah Trout Hatchery on Sunday the 13th as a stream helper for Casting for Recovery. For those of you who don't know what it is, it is a national foundation for women who have had breast cancer; it is to help them get involved in the outdoors. It was a three day seminar where they talked of the insect life in a stream, and the second day covered fishing equipment. On Sunday the women actually got to fish. They were definitely rookies, which was the reason for stream helpers, my job. My student actually caught and landed six fish and had a couple of long line releases. A long line release is when the fish gets loose before you get it in. All fishing was catch and release. Afterwards we had lunch with our students at the Hotel Winneshiek. You can't believe how enthused they were. That makes a person feel good about what they do. On the 19th I did the Dunkerton Craft Show, and I ll be removed from some of the shows that I do next year. I just took my fishing stuff, and for what I sold, I won't be back. I was asked by a friend to fish the Cedar in Waterloo with the fly rod. Not a good situation as I slipped on the Rip Rap, down I went, and I broke the rod. Oh well ---- happens. On Thursday the 24th the bank had their Brat Fest, so I showed up to do some judging on the Halloween contest. Good times. By the time you read this the Grump should have his official Grump walking stick. In closing, think young and you will be. You're only as old as you make yourself. Gary the Grump Chronicle Deadline Deadline is always the Wednesday before the paper is delivered; that date is the last Wednesday of the month. Next month the deadline is Nov. 20. Thank You. Sara Quigley Benefit 2:00 p.m until end of Live Auction Free will donation meal 4 to 6 p.m. November 2, Tripoli Town Hall Crisp air, pumpkin spice cappuccino, football, postseason volleyball, harvest, and Thanksgiving my favorite season is FINALLY here! I absolutely love this time of year, but it makes me sad that it won t last very long. However, I am trying to enjoy it while it is here. Wapsie Valley Volleyball ended with our Saturday volleyball tournaments, so I will be spending much more time outside on the weekends. This past month has been crazy busy with school, volleyball, and homecoming! School is still going great, but I think I may be developing a case of senioritis; I think a lot of my fellow classmates would agree with me. The volleyball team has been very successful; we started our run to the state tournament October 29 at Wapsie Valley against the winner of North Linn and Alburnett. It was really awesome to see familiar faces at the match! As far as homecoming goes, I had the time of my life! All of the dress-up days were great, and my friends and I had a fun time dressing for the occasion. There were so many things going on during that week. Some of my favorite events were the volleyball game, drive-in movie, the Meet the Candidates assembly, and finally, the big pep rally Friday afternoon. As most of you probably know, the bad weather Friday night forced the dance to be postponed until Saturday, October 5. A couple of friends and I went out to eat after the crowning of the king and queen (congratulations to Crystal Kleitsch and Brandon Ackerman), so we still had a great time! I want to thank the community for their continued support of Wapsie Valley. There have been many, & I know all of us students have appreciated your awesome support. As I mentioned before, the volleyball team played their first round October 29. Football had their last regular season home game the 25th, cross country had their conference meet at Reinbeck, choir had their fall concert on the 21st, & FFA sent off the national participants on the 27th. As you can see, students at Wapsie Valley are very busy & involved; we appreciated your support cheering us on during all of our activities. :) Go, Warriors! I pray that God keeps everyone safe this beautiful fall season! It wasn t a flood. It wasn t a drought. It was something they never saw coming. It was squirrels. The bushy-tailed little rodents had all but decimated their trees and gardens. To make matters worse, the three churches in town (Presbyterian, Methodist, and Lutheran) had become a favorite place for the beady -eyed monsters to build their nests. In response, the members of First Presbyterian called a congregational meeting. After much debate, one of the elders stood up and reminded everyone that God had predestined the squirrel infestation; therefore, they couldn t do anything about it. First United Methodist held their meeting the same day. After some conversation, they decided the squirrels had to go. At the urging of one of the deacons, they set some traps and released them into the wild. A day later, the squirrels were back in even greater numbers. Finally, members of First Lutheran Church decided to call a meeting. A two-week notice was added to the bulletin. With time on their side, the squirrels doubled in size and wreaked havoc. When the day finally came, the president called the meeting to order after the potluck. When no one offered any suggestions for fear of having to serve on a committee, the pastor finally came up with an idea. Promptly, the pastor baptized and confirmed the squirrels, and they haven t been seen since! Too often we consider baptism to be nothing more than a rite of passage. We see it as something in the past that doesn t apply to our daily life. But, read carefully what Martin Luther wrote in the Small Catechism: What is the significance of baptizing with water? It signifies that the old Adam in us, together with all sins and evil desires, should be drowned by daily repentance and sorrow for sin, and be put to death, and that the new person should come forth every day and rise to live before God in righteousness and purity forever. When we are confirmed, we publically proclaim to the church and the world that this is most certainly true. That is, we get to learn about how God saved us through Baptism and in faith declare that we indeed belong to Him. You can t graduate from the faith. You will never reach a point where you will be able to say, I m good to go now, God. Thanks! I ll take it from here. That s because faith must have a promise to trust in. We cannot preserve our faith. We must constantly return to the source and be given faith by the Holy Spirit through the Word. God s richest blessings, Pastor Mark Lund

In May 2013, the following scholarships were awarded to members of the class of 2013: The Klay Heineman Memorial Scholarship $250 each to Zach Kuhlman & Alyson Thurm The Dennis & Brenda Neil Memorial Scholarships $750 each to Stetson Shook & Daniel Youngblut The Families of LaVerne Leistikow, Ron Leistikow and Kurt Leistikow $500 each to Danielle Gordon, Gabriel Wittenburg & Mack Kleitsch Kenneth Werner/Sue Werner Bruce Memorial Scholarships $500 each to Adam Bachman & Mitchell Boevers Wapsie Valley Education Foundation $500 each to Abrah Meyer & Nick Gaul None of this would be possible without the support of all the communities that comprise Wapsie Valley, nor would it be able to continue. And for that, we thank you.
