1 Kindergarten-2nd August 3-4, 2013 Moses and Red Sea Exodus 5-15; Philippians 4:13 God rescues his family Hang out with kids (10 minutes): Ask kids about their week. Get kids into groups and play games together. As kids walk into the room, welcome them by name. It ll make each one feel known. And if a kid is new, introduce him or her to a couple other kids. Large Group (30 minutes): Model what it looks like to be engaged in large group. And don t be afraid to redirect kids who aren t! Small Group (20-30 minutes): Keep kids in small groups until parents arrive. If you all have extra time at the end, you can review the video and songs together. As kids leave, remind them to tell their parents the verse they memorized. Today s story is about one of the times God delivered his family by parting the Red Sea. It s pretty remarkable. If kids begin to grasp the idea that God loves to rescue his people, hopefully as they get older they ll be able to recognize just how incredible this rescue really was.

2 Goal: to help kids identify how God displayed his power in today s story Why? If kids are able to identify acts of God s power on their own in the story, they ll know how to identify God s power on their own in real-life situations too. Tip: Make verse memorization fun! It s an important way to help us remember God s truth. Spend extra time on it at the end if you want. CONNECT 1. Share your name and one word to describe the best part of your week (if you ve already connected before large group, move directly to question #2). MEMORIZE A VERSE 2. Before we talk about this story, let s say the verse we learned at the end together: Philippians 4:13: I can do everything by the power of Christ. He gives me strength. 3. Say it again with motions, to memorize it: a. I (point to self) can do everything (sweep arms dramatically outward, as to encompass everything ) b. By the power (flex arms) of Christ (point up) c. He (point up) gives me (point to self) strength (flex arms). REVIEW / DIG DEEPER 4. Give each kid a piece of paper and put kids in pairs. Ask them to draw or write down one thing that Moses did through God s power story. 5. Go around and have each partnership share their drawing. (Probe a little: ask them why they chose it, why it stuck out to them, what they think it shows about God s power, etc.) 6. What did you learn about God s power in this story? APPLY 7. Review Philippians 4:13 together. 8. What s one thing you want God to help you do this week? (continue on the following page)

3 *Pray together, asking God to specifically help each kid with what he or she expressed in question #8. Extra time? Play telephone. Use phrases from today s story, whisper them to a neighbor, then continue going around the table until the last person has gotten the message. Have them say it aloud and see how it compares to the original phrase. Here are some ideas for phrases: God is stronger than Pharaoh. We can do anything in God s power. God helped Moses rescue his family. God made a dry path through the water.

4 1 Today s story is about how God used Moses to deliver the Israelites. He showed his power through sending plagues and parting the Red Sea! The plagues can be a little scary, so really focus on how God used them to rescue his family. This story has ups and downs. Use volume and pacing to reflect those changes. For instance, speak loudly and quickly during the tense times, speak somberly during the serious times, and exude excitement when you re talking about God s power and deliverance. Hi everybody. Welcome to Kids Club! It s great to see each and every one of you. Before we get started today, turn to somebody and give them a high five. (Let kids give high fives.) Today, we re going to learn about another part of God s Story and his family. Remember, the Bible tells us parts God s story, but God s story is still happening right now! But before we hear today s story, I need everybody to stand up. (Let kids stand.) Okay, I have a job for you. Without help from anybody else, I want you to jump as high as you can and touch the ceiling. OK? Ready? Go! (Model it and let kids follow.) Did anybody get it? (Let kids say: no!) OK, let s try again. I think you can all do better. Ready, go! (Let kids try again.) Hmmm, I can t get it either. Did anybody touch the ceiling? (Feel free to ask other leaders by name, especially tall ones.) Fine, go ahead and have a seat. (Let kids sit.) So nobody could touch the ceiling? I guess maybe there are some things that we just can t do by ourselves, huh? MOSES NEEDS GOD S HELP Well, remember how God gave a guy named Moses a really important job? The ruler of Egypt Pharaoh was making God s family work as slaves. God wanted his family to be free and he wanted Moses to rescue his family and lead them to freedom! Just like we can t touch the ceiling by ourselves, Moses definitely couldn t lead God s family to freedom by himself. He needed God s power and help! So today, we re going to see how God helped Moses lead his people to freedom. PHARAOH SAYS NO After God gave Moses this special job, God told Moses to go to Egypt and say to Pharaoh, God says to let his people go. So Moses did.

5 Now, listen really carefully to hear what Pharaoh said when Moses did what God asked and told Pharaoh to let God s family the Israelites go free. (Play sound byte that says NO in slow motion.) What?! What did Pharaoh say? (Let kids say: NO!) That s right! Pharaoh was stubborn and he didn t care what God thought. He said, No! There s nothing Moses could do, but fortunately, God was helping Moses. And who do you think is stronger? God or Pharaoh? (Let kids say: God!) That s right, God is stronger! THE PLAGUES So after Pharaoh said no, God helped Moses do 10 things to show Pharaoh how powerful God is and to show us that God wanted to rescue his family. We call them the ten plagues. God was warning Pharaoh that he should say YES to Moses and let God s family go. Moses told God s family that even though Pharaoh said they couldn t leave, God would change Pharaoh s mind. As you watch, think about how serious God was about setting his family free. He did some amazing things to show Pharaoh he wanted him to let his people go! Video Clip: The Bible DVD (21:44-22:33) Wow, what were some of the things God did to show Pharaoh that he wanted his family to be free? (Let kids respond. They may say: frogs, darkness, hail, boils/sores, gnats, dead livestock, locusts, etc. The clip flashes quickly through the plagues so don t worry about trying to name nine.) Sounds pretty awful, doesn t it?! PHARAOH SAYS YES But what did Pharaoh say after each of these? (Let kids say: NO!) That s right he said NO. So God sent a 10 th and final plague. And that last plague made Pharaoh realize that God was stronger than he was. So after the final plague, Moses asked Pharaoh if God s family could go and Pharaoh said (let kids respond: YES). God s family was free! Everybody yell, Hooray! as loud you can (Let kids yell: Hooray!) This was great news! They all packed up their things and began to leave Egypt. PHARAOH CHANGES HIS MIND But then.something horrible happened! Pharaoh decided that he didn t want to let God s family go! He wanted them to keep working for him, as his slaves. And he decided that he was going to go back and get them! (Show picture of Pharaoh in a chariot.) So Pharaoh got a whole army and probably some horses and chariots. And they started chasing after God s family! GOD PARTS THE RED SEA God s family had a head start, but before long, they came to the edge of the Red Sea. (Show picture of the Red Sea.) It was too deep to cross! They had to stop, which meant that Pharaoh and his army was getting closer and closer

6 But who s stronger Pharaoh or God? (Let kids say: GOD!) Yep, God is! And Moses told God s family not to worry. He said, God will provide a way! See, Moses trusted in God. Well, God loves it when we trust him. And you know the huge, big sea (point to the picture)? God made two walls of water with a dry path RIGHT through the middle! (Show picture of people walking through the water.) The people walked through they could keep running away from Pharaoh and his army. GOD CLOSES THE SEA By the time God s family made it to the other side, Pharaoh and his men were somewhere in the middle of the sea, following the path that God s family took. But God didn t want Pharaoh to get to God s family! He wanted Pharaoh to let his family go! So God closed the sea. Both walls came down, which meant that Pharaoh and his army couldn t get to God s family again. God s family was free! (Show picture of God s family rejoicing.) The Bible says they played the tambourine and sang and danced. They were so thankful that God was powerful enough to save them. GOD IS POWERFUL When God asked Moses to lead his family to safety, Moses didn t think he could do it. He wasn t very powerful on his own. But God helped him, just like he promised. God helped Moses send warnings to Pharaoh and even made a dry path in the middle of the river! He is powerful enough to rescue his people from anything. And he can help us, just like he helped Moses. Here s what the Bible tells is in Philippians 4:13: SLIDE: Philippians 4:13: I can do everything by the power of Christ. He gives me strength. WORSHIP Wow, that s great news! A God that is SO powerful and loves to rescue us can even help US do anything. Let s stand up and sing to thank God for loving us and having the power to rescue us. We see this clearly in the way He used Moses to deliver the Israelites from Pharaoh. Ask your kid what happened. You can also read this story together in Exodus 5-15.
