2 From Our President s Desk Soo Borson, M.D. Dear Temple Isaiah Family, As I write this, Tu B'shevat the new year for trees is coming to a close. This brief period in winter is an occasion to celebrate the promise of revitalization and to embrace each other. Trees of the forest, as beautifully revealed by Peter Wohlleben, in "The Hidden Life of Trees What They Feel, How They Communicate", are part of a community quite like our own. A community a group living in the same place, or better, a group embracing each other in fellow feeling relies on strong networks of unseen but deeply felt connections. Without these, the trees of the forest would die. Like us. The state of our own community is growing stronger: we have many new members we will welcome at a special Oneg Rav this Friday night, and those of us no longer new are coming to know each other better week by week, through coming to services and participating in our many opportunities for learning and enjoyment at Temple Isaiah events. And yes, we lose some loved ones too, and we come to Temple to share the sacred space that shelters us to face the pain of that loss. This month, I have a few bits of news: we continue to make quiet progress on the key projects I wrote about last month. These projects are the focus of our sustainability efforts, and they are crucial to our ability to remain in this building beyond this year. You will hear more as we reach each critical milestone. Our two newest board members play major roles in moving us forward. Steve Gorosh, Temple Isaiah Secretary, is an attorney with deep experience in business and finance and in leading successful startups crucial skills for us in these difficult financial times. Joan Behrmann, who leads the 'kitchen cabinet' our kitchen recovery and Steve Gorosh Joan Behrmann restoration project is, with her husband Rabbi Nicolas Behrmann, a new member of our congregation. Long known to old Palm Springers as the executive editor of the Desert Sun, Joan brings extensive experience in short- and long-term planning, board leadership, and creative innovation, and is a skillful public speaker and advocate for social justice. Get to know them! We're bringing back the Memory Café in March. Thanks to member Charlene Taylor, we'll resume on March 1 and April 12, in our new 'back of the Bochner' space. And we'll be celebrating Pesach together with a First Night Seder, led by Rabbi Lazar! Look for details, coming soon. Sharing Seder with your Temple Isaiah family is a way to sustain our community and deepen those hidden connections that hold us close. Shalom,
3 From the Executive Director Douglas Morton I want to take a minute and update you on the financial situation at the Temple. The Board approved budget for that includes a $90,000 deficit. While it is the smallest annual deficit in a long time, this deficit and any other unexpected expenditures will seriously affect what limited cash we have available. The Finance Committee and the Board are now hard at work exploring what our cash flow will look like at the end of the fiscal year and how we will cover this deficit. Please know that we are diligently working on solutions to deal with the immediate future and long term realistic solutions. I hope that you are all near your calendars and ready to start booking! Next Tuesday (February 6) we have another $5 movie night at the Camelot Theatre as part of the Palm Springs Jewish Film Festival. The movie Gloomy Sunday is a story of love and fate with a twist that was inspired by actual events. AND I KNOW YOU ARE MARKING OFF MARCH FOR THE 5 th ANNUAL JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL. It will be bigger and better than ever, thanks to Eileen Stern and he hard working committee. On Sunday February 11 at 4:00 pm at the Temple Mark Oppenheimer will speak on The Jewish Media Conspiracy from the Old Yiddish Forverts to the World of Podcasts. Thanks to Dr. Michael Alexander, Maimonides Chair of Jewish Studies at the University of California Riverside for helping make these events possible. He has been a great friend of the Temple for many years. Can you believe we re not having one but three events for Modernism Week at the Temple this year! Thanks to Chuck Steinman, Nicholas Behrmann and their committee we ll be having Modernism Tours of our building on Friday February 16, Monday February 19 and Friday February 23. The booklets they will be handing out which includes a great deal of history on our building has been well researched and worth taking a few minutes to read. The presentation for the tours looks great as well. On Sunday February 18 our member Tom Stansbury and our Vice President Larry Fechter have arranged for an afternoon of Jazz with acclaimed Canadian jazz cellist Kye Marshall. There will be a reception immediately following where we will meet-and-greet performers with hosted wine and hors d oeuvres. You re going to really enjoy the Fashion Show Spanning the Decades, an event that will allow you to transport yourself through the eyes of Coco Chanel, Emilio Pucci and Dior. Our board member Mitchel Karp, who owns Mitchel s, has teamed up with M Vintage presents this event that will include sweets provided by Bread and Butter Catering. If that isn t enough, Industry stylist Neil Cohen will be here to answer your fashion questions. Check out the three event flyers and purchase tickets at Also on the afternoon of Sunday, February 18, at 4:00 pm our Judaism in the 20 th Century series (sponsored in part by the Jewish Federation of the Desert) will feature Rabbi Brad Hirschfield as he discusses Bridging the Gaps: What Pits Jews Against One Another, & What We Can Do About It. We always have the best times at our Potlucks! We ll begin Purim (Wednesday, February 28) with Rabbi Lazar reading the Megillah at 6:00 pm, followed by our Purim Potluck Dinner in the Warsaw Ballroom, organized once again by our terrific Temple Isaiah Women s Auxiliary. It is very important that you contact Shoshana Barer (Shoshana07@aol.com or call ) or Sue Speiser (sidnsues@gmail.com or call ) to let them know you are coming and what your bringing. Payment can be made by either sending in a check or registering on line, but please call Shoshana or Sue. In addition to the Megillah reading and the potluck, there will be two exciting raffles, one a bargain and one exclusive! (See Purim ad on page 6 for more details). The first meeting of our new book club organized by our member Marc Becker will be Tuesday, February 27 at 3:00 pm. We will be discussing Nathan Englander s What We Talk about When We Talk about Anne Frank. I ve started the book and right from the first page I m glad I did. Hopefully you ll pick up a copy, read it and join us. Have you checked out the new program being offered the 2 nd and 4 th Thursdays of the month from 6:00 to 7:30 pm called Psalm Springs, which is Interpreting the Psalms with Peter Gordon and Rabbi David Lazar. I want to jump ahead and let you know about Boo2Bullying on March 6. Twice Blessed, in conjunction with the Jewish Federation of the Desert, will be presenting Boo2Bullying President and Founder Dimitri Halkidis who will talk about bullying and what they do to combat it. Dimitri will be bringing young adults who have been through these experiences. We will also see 3 animation clips that were shown at the Animation Film Festival, which deal with Jewish and/or Gay topics. They will definitely move you, I know they affected me. Have you been in the Back of the Bochner yet? We are utilizing the area as it was originally intended, for socializing at our Onegs, Kiddushes and other events. I m sure you ll find it a refreshing and beautiful change of environment! I hope all of you will support the many events that so many are working on so hard. Sign up for all events can be done at and/or by calling I look forward to seeing you! Shalom, Douglas
