Looking Back: Egypt has barely survived another devastating plague. This one came via a strong east wind (ordered by God, of course), and took the form of very small, but extremely hungry insects locusts to be exact! A small number of these would definitely pose no threat to the Egyptians, but the LORD sent them out in huge ranks!! Proverbs 30:27 tells us that, The locusts have no king, yet all of them go out in ranks. They may not have a king of like kind, but they obey another Master for sure, as evidenced in this chapter. The amazingly complete devastation left behind nothing green, but did all of this bring Pharaoh to his knees? Nope! His heart just keeps getting harder and harder! Darkness, the death of all the first-born of Egypt Are we getting close, yet? Looking Ahead: CC WESTGROVE S WOMENS MINISTRY /2014 EXODUS The New American Standard Bible (NASB) has been used to prepare this Study. When a question instructs you to use your study tools/helps, this means to use your personal concordance, dictionary or other resource. Chapter 12 This chapter is so incredibly FULL of glimpses into the Lamb of God, our Passover. We will follow along as the LORD gives detailed instructions to the children of Israel as to how, when, and where to celebrate the Passover. Remember how God had promised to kill all the first-born of Egypt in chapter 11? God s people were to be totally protected from this avenger, IF they were faithful to do all that the LORD commanded. As we read through this account of that promised night, try to imagine what it would have been like to be there. We are told that there was a great cry in Egypt as each house discovered death in their midst. What would it have been like for God s children as they heard the screams and realized that the LORD truly HAD provided a way for them to be passed over? This Passover Celebration is now to be a regularly observed throughout all generations for the Israelites. We, as New Testament Believers, have also been passed over in judgment. As it was on that first night, when God saw the blood, God sees the blood of His Son when He looks at you and me. Awesome! This week s Memory verse is 1 Corinthians 5:7. Begin memorizing the verse(s) today. Pray and ask the Holy Spirit to help you memorize this passage and for opportunities to apply it Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened. For Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed. 1 Corinthians 5:7 Write out 1 Corinthians 5:7 Write this verse(s) on your index cards keep one with you & post the other in a prominent place. Using your study tools, share what it means to be unleavened: 1
DAY ONE Pray then read Exodus 12: Complete v.2: This shall be the of months ; it is to be the of the to. A. Why do you believe the LORD wanted this to be a new beginning for His people? Please share your resource: 1. In what way does the Lord give every believer a new beginning? (2 Corinthians 5:17) Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior? Yes No - If you have, be brave and share a 90 second version of your new beginning in Christ. If not, you may do so right now! Confess to the Lord that you need Him and want a new beginning. Invite Him into your heart; ask Him to forgive you of all your sins. Thank Him for forgiving you and coming into your heart. Now Tell EVERYONE! You are a New Creation! 2. To whom were Moses and Aaron told to speak to? (v.3) ** Peek ahead to Exodus 13:4, what is the name of this new month? ** Continuing in Exodus 12:3, which day of the month was this ordinance to begin? A. Rules in regard to the lamb: ** How many lambs per household? ** According to v.4, what was to be done if a particular lamb was too big? ** Using v.5-6 list the specific requirements of every lamb. Write out Peter s description of Jesus, the Lamb of God in1 Peter 1:19: Perhaps you have another Scripture that describes our beautiful Jesus. Please share it with the ladies in your group, and why it is precious to you: 3. Following the killing at twilight, what were they instructed to do with the blood? (v.7) The blood was to be on the side posts and the upper door posts to be looked to, not on the threshold where it might be trodden under foot. Robert Brown A. How was the lamb to be prepared/eaten? (v.8) 1. What were they told NOT to do? (v.9) a. What were they to do with the leftovers? (v.10) Let s practice our memory verse: out the so that may be a new, just as you are in fact. For our also has been. : DAY TWO Pray then read Exodus 12: The Israelites were given a specific manner in which to eat this meal. (v.11) Word Scramble! * your nolis egdidr * oury ladsasn no your tefe * your fsfat ni oyur adhn * you laslh tae ti in sahet A. What does the LORD name this ordinance? 1. According to v.14, how long would this ordinance last? Explain. 2
2. The LORD declares His sixth and final plague, again. What did it involve? (v.12a) A. In addition to all the firstborn in Egypt being killed, what else would God accomplish? * Exodus 12:12 * Numbers 33:4 1. Why? (v.12c) 3. What sign would the LORD look for in order to pass over the homes of the Israelites? (v.13) A. Read Romans 5:6-11. Re-read v.9. Why is God willing to allow His wrath to pass over us? Stop for a few minutes and present to the Lord Jesus a fragrant offering of Praise & Thanksgiving We love, because He first loved us. 1 John 4:19 4. What did the LORD proclaim in regard to this day? (v.14) A. How many days were they instructed to eat unleavened bread? (v.15) B. What were they to do on the first day? 1. What would be the consequence of eating unleavened bread? (v.15) Leaven represents sin in our lives. Leaven permeates the whole loaf, and in the same way, sin affects our entire life. Are you allowing any leaven to remain in your heart, or your home? Read Hebrews 10: He loves you and has made provision for YOU! Run to Him, repent rejoice in His forgiveness!! O how He loves you and me! 5. What was to be held on the 1 st and the 7 th day? (v.16a) A. V.16b says no work at all should be done on these two days. What was the exception? Explain 6. What would the Feast of Unleavened Bread bring to mind, and how long were they to observe it? (v.17) A. In addition to not eating leavened bread, what were they to do the 14 th evening through the 21 st evening within their homes? (v.18) PERFECT segue to practice 1 Corinthians 5:7 DAY THREE Pray then read Exodus 12: Who did Moses call for, and what instructions were they given? (v.21) 2. The instructions given in Exodus 12:1-20 by the LORD to Moses are now being given to the people by Moses in Exodus 12: List the additional information given in v.22-23: ** How were they to apply the blood to the lintel and two doorposts? (v.22a) A. Where else in the Bible do we see hyssop used? Mix and match. 1. cleansing of leper John 19: David s cry for cleansing Leviticus 14: Dipped in vinegar/offered to Jesus Psalm 51:7-8 ** According to v.22c, what were the people instructed to do? ** Who would the LORD not allow to enter the Israelites homes? (v.23) Something to Ponder: The inmate of the house did not see the sprinkled blood. It was not necessary to be always going forth to look at it. It was clearly not a matter for his emotion or his intelligence. It was an accomplished fact, and it was enough for God to see it: When I see the blood I will pass over. Abide thou in Christ. It is not necessary to try to understand, or feel; just be quiet and trust the finished work and the sworn promise of God. He hath said: Whosoever believeth shall not perish. The Lamb slain is in the middle of the throne; it is enough. Let us keep the feast, not with the leavened bread of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of 3
sincerity and truth. Remember that you must put away all ferment, and all that partakes of disease, decay, or death that God may be able to tarry in the house of your life, and be your fellow-pilgrim in the march of life. FB Meyer 3. The Israelites would continue to practice this ordinance, with their children forever. (v.24) When a child asks, What does this rite mean to you? what was to be their answer? (v.27a) What would your response be to your child s (or any child s) question, Mom, why do we go to Church? A. What was the people s response to Moses command? (v.27b) 4. V. 28 says, Then the sons of Israel went and did so; just as the LORD had commanded Moses and Aaron, so they did. Read John 14:15. What does keeping the Lord s commandments prove? A. What will result from keeping the Lord s commandments? (John 15:10) Without peeking, write out 1 Corinthians 5:7 speaking it out loud as you write: Ask someone if you may share 1 Corinthians 5:7 with them. If you did share with your group DAY FOUR Pray then read Exodus 12: Who was struck down at midnight? (v.29) A. Why was there a great cry in Egypt? (v.30b) 2. God is ALWAYS true to His Word, and makes no apologies for His judgments. Write out Pharaoh s response to Moses and Aaron in v.31: A. Does Pharaoh offer a compromise this time? Explain (v.32a) 1. Write out Pharaoh s request in v.32b? and. a. Look back at Exodus 5:2. Do you believe Pharaoh knows who God is now? Share your thoughts: 3. What reason did the Egyptians give for urging them to leave in haste? (v.33) A. Write out Psalm 105:38: Define DREAD 4. As the Israelites began their Exodus, what and/or who did they take with them? ** v.34 ** v ** v.37b ** v. 38 A. According to Numbers 11:4 and Deuteronomy 29:11, what can we learn about this mixed multitude? 12:38 the mixed multitude tude included other Semites (Genesis 9:26) who had settled in the Nile delta region and some Egyptians. They later became a source of trouble to Moses (Numbers 11:4-6). Ryrie Study Bible Notes 1. According to Zechariah 8:23, why might they want to follow? 4. How long had the sons of Israel lived in Egypt? (v.40) A. Why was this a night to be observed for the LORD?(v.42) 1. This was to be observed by whom and for how long? Time to practice 1 Corinthians 5:7 4
DAY FIVE Pray then read Exodus 12: Verses list the regulations of Passover: ** Was this ordinance intended for everyone? (v.43) Explain ** When may the purchased slave participate? (v.44) ** Who shall NOT eat of it? (v.45) ** How and where was it to be eaten? (v.46) ** Who is to celebrate this ordinance? (v.47) A. Vs. 46b specifies Nor are you to break any bone of it. What does John 19:33; 36 tell us about Jesus? If you look at prophecies given and fulfilled in Jesus simply to prove that He is the fulfillment of those prophecies, you re missing a great deal. In this case, John takes a couple of verses to make clear that, just as prophesied, not a bone of Jesus was broken. Why is this so important? Because there is blood continually produced in the bone. Therefore, God mandated not a bone of His would be broken, ensuring perpetual and inexhaustible supply of blood. Jon Courson 2. What is the requirement of a stranger or alien desiring to celebrate the Passover? (v.48-49) Explain A. According to Romans 10:12-13, what condition exists today for both Jew and Greek who want to be saved? Time to practice & write out your memory verse: Your name, O LORD, is everlasting, Your remembrance, O LORD, throughout all generations. For the LORD will judge His people and will have compassion on His servants. The idols of the nations are but silver and gold, the work of man s hands. Psalm 135:
