2 2 Texts: Matthew 21:1-11 Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem 1. As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, 2. saying to them, Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. 3. If anyone says anything to you, tell him that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away. 4. This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: 5. Say to the Daughter of Zion, See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. 6. The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. 7. They brought the donkey and the colt, placed their cloaks on them, and Jesus sat on them. 8. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9. The crowd that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest! 10. When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, Who is this? Mark 11:1-11, 1. And when they came nigh to Jerusalem, unto Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount of Olives, he sendeth forth two of his disciples,

3 And saith unto them, Go your way into the village over against you: and as soon as ye be entered into it, ye shall find a colt tied, where on never man sat; loose him, and bring him. 3. And if any man say unto you, Why do ye this? Say ye that the Lord hath need of him; and straightway he will send him hither. 4. And they went their way, and found the colt tied by the door without in a place where two ways met; and they loose him. 5. And certain of them that stood there said unto them, What do ye, loosing the colt? 6. And they said unto them even as Jesus had commanded: and they let them go. 7. And they brought the colt to Jesus, and cast their garments on him; and he sat upon him. 8. And many spread their garments in the way: and others cut down branches off the trees and strawed them in the way. 9. And they that went before, and they that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna; Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord: 10. Blessed be the kingdom of our father David, that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest. 11. And Jesus entered into Jerusalem, and into the temple: and when he had looked round about upon all things, and now the eventide was come, he went out unto Bethany with the twelve. Luke 19:29-44, 29. And it came to pass, when he was come nigh to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, 30. Saying, Go ye into the village over against you; in the which at your entering ye shall find a colt tied, whereon yet never man sat: loose him, and bring him hither. 31. And if any man ask you, Why do ye loose him? thus shall ye say unto him, Because the Lord hath need of him.

4 And they that were sent went their way, and found even as he had said unto them. 33. And as they were loosing the colt, the owners thereof said unto them, Why loose ye the colt? 34. And they said, The Lord hath need of him. 35. And they brought him to Jesus: and they cast their garments upon the colt, and they set Jesus thereon. 36. And as he went, they spread their clothes in the way. 37. And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen; 38. Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest. 39. And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples. 40. And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out. 41. And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it, 42. Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! But now they are hid from thine eyes. 43. For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side, 44. And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.

5 5 John 12:12-19, 12. On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13. Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord. 14. And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written, 15. Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass s colt. 16. These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him. 17. The people therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bare record. 18. For this cause the people also met him, for that they heard that he had done this miracle. 19. The Pharisees therefore said among themselves Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? Behold, the world is gone after him. Introduction: I. The actions of Jesus Christ on that first Palm Sunday were radical and revolutionary! A. Jesus did not come serving a bland tasteless diet of Pabulum. B. He expects his gospel to make a profound difference in our lives and in the lives of those around us. C. Jesus went to Jerusalem, the center of opposition to his work, and confronted evil on its home base!

6 6 D. Early disciples did this as well. 1. Acts 17:6, But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some other brothers before the city officials, shouting: These men who have caused trouble all over the world have now come here, NIV 2. Acts 17:6, And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also; AV E. Our ministry, if it is truly Biblical, will appear to many of our day to be radial and revolutionary as well. Commentary: The Triumphal Entry Matthew 21:1, As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, Mark 11:1, And when they came nigh to Jerusalem, unto Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount of Olives, he sendeth forth two of his disciples, Luke 19:29, And it came to pass, when he was come nigh to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, I. In Matthew 20:18, Jesus said, Behold, we go to Jerusalem. A. This must have been spoken with great emotion as he knew what was going to happen there.

7 7 B. As they approached Jerusalem Jesus and the apostles passed through Bethphage and came to the Mount of Olives. C. Bethphage was a village near Bethany on or near the road which led from Jerusalem to Jericho. D. Bethphage (place of figs). Bethany (place of dates). E. From or near Bethphage, Jesus sent two of his disciples to secure a donkey and a colt which Jesus would ride into Jerusalem. F. The Mount of Olives was a north to south ridge located east of Jerusalem which rose to a maximum height of 2676 feet and provided an excellent view of Jerusalem. G. On the Mount of Olives the Romans built a command post. H. The valley between the Mount of Olives and Jerusalem contained the Valley of Jehoshaphat and the Valley of Hinnom, Gehenna. Matthew 21:2, saying to them, Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. Mark 11:2, And saith unto them, Go your way into the village over against you: and as soon as ye be entered into it, ye shall find a colt tied, where on never man sat; loose him, and bring him. Luke 19:30, Saying, Go ye into the village over against you; in the which at your entering ye shall find a colt tied, whereon yet never man sat: loose him, and bring him hither. I. Jesus foreknew what the disciples would find in the village; that is, a donkey tied and a colt with her.

8 8 A. The disciples were to loose them, and take them to Jesus. B. The colt had never been broken. No one had before ridden on this colt. Matthew 21:3, If anyone says anything to you, tell him that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away. Mark 11:3, And if any man say unto you, Why do ye this? Say ye that the Lord hath need of him; and straightway he will send him hither. Luke 19:31, 33, 34, And if any man ask you, Why do ye loose him? thus shall ye say unto him, Because the Lord hath need of him. And as they were loosing the colt, the owners thereof said unto them, Why loose ye the colt? And they said, The Lord hath need of him. I. If any should ask the disciples by what right they appropriated these animals, they were to reply, The Lord hath need of them. A. Jesus refers to himself here as, The Lord. B. Upon hearing this, the owner of the animals, perhaps a disciple of Jesus, would immediately send them to Jesus. C. Jesus owned no livestock. Even for his triumphal entry into Jerusalem he rode on a borrowed donkey. II. Jesus knew the future, and that the owner of these animals would immediately send them to Jesus when requested to do so.

9 9 Matthew 21:4, 5, This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: Say to the Daughter of Zion, See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. Luke 12:14-16, And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written, Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass s colt. These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him. I. This occurrence fulfilled the prophecy of Zechariah. A. Zechariah 9:9, Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. B. This passage was regarded as a prophecy of the Messiah. C. Jesus applied this scripture to himself, again acknowledging that he was the Messiah. Matthew 21, 6, 7, The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. They brought the donkey and the colt, placed their cloaks on them, and Jesus sat on them. Mark 11:4-7, And they went their way, and found the colt tied by the door without in a place where two ways met; and they loose him. And certain of them that stood there said unto them, What do ye, loosing the colt? And they said unto them even as Jesus had commanded: and they let them go. And they brought the colt to Jesus, and cast their garments on him; and he sat upon him.

10 10 Luke 19:32, 35, And they that were sent went their way, and found even as he had said unto them. And they brought him to Jesus: and they cast their garments upon the colt, and they set Jesus thereon. I. Certain bystanders including the owners of these donkeys, when they saw the disciples untie the colt, asked the disciples what they were doing. Did they think the disciples were going to steal the donkeys in broad daylight. II. The disciples did exactly as Jesus had commanded. A. Disciples today must also do immediately and exactly as Jesus commands us. B. Jesus only needed one animal, but the foal/colt along with its mother exactly fulfilled the prophecy of Zechariah. III. The disciples placed their garments on the donkey (colt) for a saddle and Jesus mounted the donkey (foal) for the ride into Jerusalem. IV. Jesus, the conquering hero, entered Jerusalem riding on a donkey whereas victorious military conquerors rode in parades on spirited white horses. Kings on missions of peace rode on donkeys. Kings going to war rode horses. A. Christ s kingdom was definitely different. B. Not only was this procession different in that Jesus was riding on a lowly donkey. It was also different in that the people applauding Jesus were very ordinary common people.

11 11 Matthew 21:8, A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. Mark 11:8, And many spread their garments in the way: and others cut down branches off the trees and strawed them in the way. Luke 19:36, And as he went, they spread their clothes in the way. John 12:12, 13, On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord. I. The multitudes, as a way of honoring Jesus, rolled out the red carpet for him in the form of placing branches and their garments before him. II. Two groups converged to form the multitude, one group from Bethany who had knowledge of the resurrection of Lazarus and another coming from Jerusalem who had heard of this mighty wonder worker. A. A great multitude that had come to Jerusalem for the Passover Feast heard that Jesus was coming and went forth to meet him. B. They took palm branches with which to provide Jesus a red carpet welcome. This was a customary manner of greeting for popular heroes. C. Jehu was honored in 2 Kings 9:13, Then they hasted, and took every man his garment, and put it under him on the top of the stairs, and blew with trumpets, saying, Jehu is king.

12 12 III. Other examples of triumphal entries are as follows: A. David was welcomed by singing and dancing women upon his return from the slaughter of the Philistines. B. When Xerxes passed over the Hellespont Bridge myrtle branches were strewn before him. Dardanelles, north east corner of the Aegean sea near Istanbul on the waterway connecting the Black sea with the Aegean Sea. C. The route of Alexander the Great was covered with flowers as he entered Babylon. D. Monier related how the way of a Persian ruler was strewn for three miles with roses. IV. This triumphal entry was on Sunday (Palm Sunday so-called from the palm branches strewn in his path) one week prior to the resurrection. A. The triumphal entry continues until the present time as sinners, converted by the gospel, invite Jesus into their hearts and lives. V. The Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem is recorded in all four (4) gospels indicating in this way its importance. Matthew 21:9, The crowd that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest! Mark 11:9, 10, And they that went before, and they that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna; Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord: Blessed be the kingdom of our father David, that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest.

13 13 Luke 19:37, 38, And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen; Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest. I. The multitudes shouted, Hosanna to the Son of David; Blessed is he who cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the Highest. A. The multitudes acclaimed Jesus as the long awaited Messiah! The multitude proclaimed Jesus as he who came in the name of the Lord and as the king of Israel. B. Hosanna means Save us now or Save, we pray thee. Hosanna is an appeal to God for deliverance. Oh Jehovah, save now! C. The word was used as a prayer in Israel for the coming Messiah. II. Scriptures: A. Psalm 118 may have been written as the dedication psalm for the second temple. B. Psalm 118:25, 26, Save now, I beseech thee, O Lord: O Lord, I beseech thee, send now prosperity. Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the Lord: we have blessed you out of the house of the Lord. III. The disciples did not immediately understand the meaning and implications of all this, only after Jesus ascension did they fully comprehended what this triumphal entry meant. We also will understand better bye and bye.

Jesus began his entry into Jerusalem at the Mount of Olives as foretold by Zechariah 14:4, 9, And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south. And the Lord shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one Lord, and his name one. V. The entourage began in earnest at the descent of the Mount of Olives. VI. The multitudes shouted several expressions of praise including, Blessed is the king that cometh in the name of the Lord; peace in heaven, and glory in the highest. There was peace in heaven, but not on earth in regard to Christ the King. Matthew 21:10, 11, When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, Who is this? The crowds answered, This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee. Mark 11:11, And Jesus entered into Jerusalem, and into the temple: and when he had looked round about upon all things, and now the eventide was come, he went out unto Bethany with the twelve. I. The entry of Jesus amidst this acclaim into Jerusalem focused all eyes upon Christ. Jesus had a price on his head. To ride publicly into Jerusalem where every eye was upon him took untold courage. A. The people of Jerusalem asked, Who is this? B. The multitudes answered with one voice, This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.

15 15 C. The destiny of our eternal souls hinges on our answer to this question, Who is this (Jesus)? II. The people recognized Jesus as the Son of David, but their rulers disbelieved and condemned Jesus to be crucified. III. Jesus went every night to the Mount of Olives, that also being in the direction of Bethany. This may have been in part to, during the night, protect himself from assassination attempts. Luke 19:39, 40, And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples. And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out. John 12:17, 18, The people therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bare record. 16 16 I. The Pharisees realized that they were prevailing nothing in their opposition to Jesus and declared in exasperation, The world has gone after him. Their response to Jesus success was to resolve to kill him! II. In this huge multitude was a smaller multitude present on the occasion of Lazarus resurrection who now praised Jesus for this unspeakable miracle. Those in Jerusalem had heard of Lazarus resurrection and Jesus approach and went eagerly to meet him. III. Jesus enemies, the Pharisees, called to him from the crowd and directed him to rebuke his disciples who were saying these things. The Pharisees still regarded themselves as having the right to give religious orders to everyone else. IV. Jesus responded that he would do no such thing! Even if these people stopped their praise, stones, nature, would declare his deity. Habakkuk 2:11, For the stone shall cry out of the wall, and the beam out of the timber shall answer it. V. Jesus, in the midst of praise and adulation, thought about the woes to be visited on Jerusalem because of their sins and wept, sobbed in anguish, over the city. Jesus was and is concerned for us, even us. VI. Luke 19:41-44 spoke of the utter destruction of Jerusalem and is literally correct! VII. All Jesus efforts to avert this destruction had been refused. Jesus wept over the physical and spiritual desolation coming upon Jerusalem... a terrible, needless waste.
