Heavenly Father; Thank you very much for this time to get together, to look at your word and break bread here and share our trials. And learn how to become patient to have more endurance, how to gain the faith, your faith that we can do these things YOU are teaching to us to overcome the world. All those things within that we all wrestle with and know you're doing it for good. We re grateful for the process, but we need more gratitude, more faith to do all these things well. In Christ s Name, Amen. Welcome back to our Sunday night study. We are continuing our study on the emotions, so today we re going to study jealousy, which is kind of the second half of envy and jealousies; very interesting. Envy is more of a envying what somebody else has; their things, their possessions and their spouses. You can even be envious of their success; it can be any of these things. Jealousy, on the other hand, is usually talked about in the Scriptures in the context of marriage. And it's the idea that in a proper marriage relationship you expect commitments, in that you re both supposed to be serving one another, loving one another, having that your first priority above anything else or anyone else in the world. And when that is not happening and you feel the affections, attentions or energies of your spouse going outside of the marriage, the natural response is jealousy. Now, the world today usually talks about jealousy only in a negative way, like; Oh, he's just jealous in that kind of an attitude. But really jealousy is a very positive thing. It's the idea that you're upset at someone else for not fulfilling the proper part of the marriage relationship. [Now you can be jealous for no cause and that's a problem.] We re going to focus mostly on how God is a jealous God, and how we are to be jealous over one another as the body of Christ, which are bonded together in a marriage relationship, as the scriptures describe. So we will start here in Deuteronomy 32:16 to 21; where it says: Deuteronomy 32:16 (ESV) They stirred him to jealousy with strange gods; with abominations they provoked him to anger. Deuteronomy 32:17 (ESV) They sacrificed to demons that were no gods, to gods they had never known, to new gods that had come recently, whom your fathers had never dreaded. Deuteronomy 32:18 (ESV) You were unmindful of the Rock that bore you, and you forgot the God who gave you birth. Deuteronomy 32:19 (ESV) The LORD saw it and spurned them, because of the provocation of his sons and his daughters. Deuteronomy 32:20 (ESV) And he said, I will hide my face from them; I will see what their end will be, for they are a perverse generation, children in whom is no faithfulness.

Deuteronomy 32:21 (ESV) They have made me jealous with what is no god; they have provoked me to anger with their idols. So I will make them jealous with those who are no people; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation. So here is God describing in the Scriptures how angry and jealous HE is over the nation of Israel going after other gods, which is the spiritual equivalent of adultery. We all know how outraged people are about adultery and how much it destroys families, even how murders are committed over this type of thing. I mean this is a very serious offense and good reason that God uses such powerful emotion evoking language to describe this particular sin, because of how detrimental it is to the Body of Christ as a whole. When you've got a physical family and one of the parents are being unfaithful outside of the marriage, it affects everybody. It doesn't just affect them; it's everyone that is involved, even affects the children the rest of their lives and how they have trust issues that destroys their relationships. The point being is that our sins don't only affect us. We think, What s your problem?, I'm just doing what I want to do to make me happy. When one parent says that, it affects everybody. I Kings 14: Ki 14:22 (ESV) And Judah did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, and they provoked him to jealousy with their sins that they committed, more than all that their fathers had done. 1Ki 14:23 (ESV) For they also built for themselves high places and pillars and Asherim [ashra poles] on every high hill and under every green tree, 1Ki 14:24 (ESV) and there were also male cult prostitutes in the land. They did according to all the abominations of the nations that the LORD drove out before the people of Israel. When the people of Israel come in to possess the Promised Land, it was full of all these pagan nations. So God would systematically, step-by-step working through Christ, and all the people, would raise up in Israel to drive out these pagan nations, which are symbols of the giants in our land, the sin, the rebellion, and the disobedience. One of the biggest things he always harped on was; don't do what the people around you do. Don't be like them, don't be like the world. Be you separate, that s what holy means, to be separated. What's making God so angry is that they are acting just like the nations. They re prostituting with the nations by essentially just fornicating, committing harlotry and adultery. In going back to all the nations, who HE spent all this time so diligently driving out, they run right back to them and bring them in bed with them, so to speak. And just as a faithful husband would be when his wife is running around, he's jealous over her and it is not a negative thing. It is a positive thing, because Israel is going to reap very bad fruit for this disobedience. It's not going to go well for them.

Indulging in the flesh does not produce any long-term good fruit. It is a passing pleasure of sin for a season, which feels really nice in the moment. A lot of things are very enjoyable in the short-term. Just like, you know how drugs or alcohol or even food, sugar highs or all these things feels good when you're doing it, but in the aftermath it is very, very dangerous and very destructive. The key thing is to realize that adultery in scriptures is much more than just; Why, I ve never cheated on my spouse, I ve never married, how can I be an adulterous? Well, when you're not putting God first, then by extension, you re not putting HIS Body first. Serving them first is the same as if you were married and literally committing adultery. That's how Christ views it. That's how God views it. So one of the first big battles in overcoming sin is we don't even realize what we re doing is wrong. We don t even know, so the first step is understanding how egregious our affections of being on the world and not being devoted where they should be. How destructive and painful that's going to be for us and all those around us, which then we can properly hate sin to actually go and deal with it. But if we don't equate what we re doing in our lives with adultery and have outrage over it within ourselves, we re going to be like; Oh that s the enemy, oh it s okay, no problem, and sit down on the couch. Wanna drink? Hang out with me. You don't understand! No, that s the enemy. He s going to destroy you! He s going to destroy you, ravage your land, your family and you ll have nothing. Psa 78:58 (ESV) For they provoked him to anger with their high places; they moved him to jealousy with their idols. Psa 78:59 (ESV) When God heard, he was full of wrath, and he utterly rejected Israel. So remember, Israel is not Israel after the flesh. Israel is those who are circumcised in the heart. This is really talking about GOD S true people, HIS Elect. And when we do not keep HIS commandments, which we won t, then HE LL reject us and we ll go into judgment knowing what it s like when the husband kicks us out of the house because you re running around. And go figure this out on your own and see how it goes, it doesn t go very well. Psa 78:60 (ESV) He forsook his dwelling at Shiloh, the tent where he dwelt among mankind, Psa 78:61 (ESV) and delivered his power to captivity, his glory to the hand of the foe. Psa 78:62 (ESV) He gave his people over to the sword and vented his wrath on his heritage. Psa 78:63 (ESV) Fire devoured their young men, and their young women had no marriage song. Psa 78:64 (ESV) Their priests fell by the sword, and their widows made no lamentation.

Psa 78:65 (ESV) Then the Lord awoke as from sleep, like a strong man shouting because of wine. Psa 78:66 (ESV) And he put his adversaries to rout;[meaning, HE destroyed them, HE drove them out] he put them to everlasting shame. When these things are within us and we had this adulterous attitude of not putting God and his things first, then you know that the Lord is patient and long-suffering. HE lets us store up wrath; HE lets us do it for a while, until it gets to be a big enough issue and then it's like he awakes [HE was never really sleeping]. Because he's been quiet and not saying anything, it's like he's asleep and when he wakes up, HE s mad, right? Because we ve been doing this for a while, that's when he pours out the cup of his wrath upon whatever it is we re doing, and then the bad consequences and the big bad fruits are born. Then we start to realize, Oh, I'm the man!, I ve been ungrateful. and I got this good husband here and I m not paying attention to him and I m neglecting the kids and What have I been doing? But you don't realize that, until all these protections that you have are taken. You don't realize how protected you are in the house, until you leave the house, then it all starts to come back to you. Oh, now I know why it's not good for man to be alone, now I know why it's good to not forsake the assembly of the righteous. Before you just take it for granted, you just kind of have been there in the house. Eze 16:32 (ESV) Adulterous wife, who receives strangers instead of her husband! Eze 16:33 (ESV) Men give gifts to all prostitutes, but you gave your gifts to all your lovers, bribing them to come to you from every side with your whorings. [I'll explain in a minute]. Eze 16:34 (ESV) So you were different from other women in your whorings. No one solicited you to play the whore, and you gave payment, while no payment was given to you; therefore you were different. Eze 16:35 (ESV) Therefore, O prostitute, hear the word of the LORD: Eze 16:36 (ESV) Thus says the Lord GOD, Because your lust was poured out and your nakedness uncovered in your whorings with your lovers, and with all your abominable idols, and because of the blood of your children that you gave to them, Eze 16:37 (ESV) therefore, behold, I will gather all your lovers with whom you took pleasure, all those you loved and all those you hated. I will gather them against you from every side and will uncover your nakedness to them, that they may see all your nakedness. So this is supposed to be scary like this is supposed to be, you know, when you re doing some really bad things and you get caught and you get that feeling in the pit of your stomach, like oh my goodness, this is not well. That's what he's describing, they say I'm going to uncover this I'm going to reveal it to make it known. There is going to be shame, because that's necessary for the healing process.

This was an interesting commentary by John Gill. I thought he explained the physical aspect of this well. He says; But as a wife that committeth adultery, who has a husband, and is provided for with all the necessities of life, with food and clothing; and so has no need to prostitute herself for a livelihood, as common strumpets do; [Most prostitutes do it because they can't pay their bills. Otherwise, a lot of times, they even will say: I'm doing it for my kids. or for my family and they're getting paid for doing that work], but does it purely for the satiating of her lust: [It's not because Israel lacked, that they went out and did this]. And such were the people of the Jews, they were married to the Lord, who took care of them, provided everything for them, and acted the part of a husband to them; so that it was the weakness of their hearts, and the strength of their corruptions, which led them to depart from HIM to commit idolatry and adultery, while the sin of the Gentiles was simple fornication: This is where it talks about it in Jeremiah 31: Jer 31:32 (ESV) not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the LORD. So God calls himself our husband. HE said; Look I got you by the hand, brought you out, provided for you. I'm giving you everything you need, so here s the commandments... here is the priest. What else do you want? And then what does Israel go and do? They go out to fornicate, run around with everything they get their hands on. And they re even giving money to others to come do it with them. And we ll read some stories about this in a minute, by just how they're doing it. Remember everything is talking about Israel is talking about us. All the things we need are supplied by the riches of Christ. Jonathan read earlier; don't be anxious about anything but in prayer and supplication submit your request knowing the Lord's going to provide. When we get fearful, worried, scared and impatient, that s when we run out and play the whore, by trying to get all these needs met in unrighteous ways. Because we just can't sit at home and be faithful to the husband and do what he says, trusting he's going to provide for us. We all lack faith. That's what this is all about, realizing the lack of faith, so that our faith can be increased. Continuing with John Gill: They give gifts to all whores. Gifts are usually given to whores by those who commit whoredom with them; it is for the sake of these that prostitute their bodies, nor will they

do this without gain; see Gen 38:16; but thou givest thy gifts to all thy lovers; the Jews gave the Egyptians and Assyrians money, to gain their friendship, and procure alliances with them; see 2Ki 16:8; and were at great expenses with their idols, and in support of their idolatrous worship: So here's the story in second Kings 16: 2Ki 16:7 (ESV) So Ahaz sent messengers to Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria, [his enemy] saying, I am your servant and your son. Come up and rescue me from the hand of the king of Syria and from the hand of the king of Israel, who are attacking me. Ahaz is under attack and he is concerned, so rather than going to GOD to pray, trusting HE S going to deliver and trusting the process, he goes off to a pagan king to say; You come help me with my enemies. 2Ki 16:8 (ESV) Ahaz also took the silver and gold that was found in the house of the LORD and in the treasures of the king's house and sent a present to the king of Assyria. Notice what he s doing here; he is taking God's gold and silver, what is his in the temple, and taking it to a pagan king and says: Here you take what was the Lord s, you protect me. Such is complete and utter betrayal in that it is a complete lack of faith. We do the exact same thing, we take our time or energy, our efforts, rather than putting them in to study the Scriptures in prayer and seeking wisdom from the body, we just run off to the world with no regard for the process and try to get it solved that way. There's nothing wrong with going to the world in a proper way. Doctors can be helpful, people in business and finance can be helpful. This is talking about following the proper process with a multitude of counselors, not breaking God's commandments, not doing something unrighteous. 2Ki 16:9 (ESV) And the king of Assyria listened to him. The king of Assyria marched up against Damascus and took it, carrying its people captive to Kir, and he killed Rezin. What happens? Israel is getting temporary relief, right? Here you go, you got the king doing what he said he was going to do; I ll go take care of your enemies for you. 2Ch 28:22 (ESV) In the time of his distress he became yet more faithless to the LORD this same King Ahaz. 2Ch 28:23 (ESV) For he sacrificed to the gods of Damascus that had defeated him and said, Because the gods of the kings of Syria helped them, I will sacrifice to them that they may help me. But they were the ruin of him and of all Israel Remember, last week we talked about envy in not envying the wicked? What happened here? Ahaz envied the prosperity and the seeming deliverance of the kings of Syria and said; Well it's going good for them, it ll go good for me. They abandoned the God of Israel and go over there and give it to them. But what happens in the end? In the end, it ends up being the ruin of him and all of Israel. We have to always keep the end in mind

and not think that the short-term passing pleasures of sin that heathens are getting are going to come to us. When I remember a situation, which I won t say all the details, I had envy of one of my friends many years ago, because he seemed he was doing alright and going along in life. So I tried what he was doing and I was a total disaster. It didn t do anything for me. I got worse! He was just trotting along and doing well, but I just can't get away with anything. When you're called and chosen, it just doesn't work. It just doesn't work! Just like Jonah, the good curse is upon you and the Lord will find you, put that hook in your mouth and drag you into the boat, whether you like it or not so we can do this the easy way or we do it the hard way. So I did a study a while back on, actually Boyd asked the question: why was Christ born of a virgin? In answering that question it actually goes through this story of King Ahaz and that's actually tied into the prophecies in Isaiah about Christ being born a virgin, so it's pretty interesting, how it all ties in. So I encourage you to read that study: You'll see how all these stories weave together. But the bottom line was being born of a virgin is essentially God doing the work. It wasn't man's seed that impregnated Mary that bore the good fruit of Christ. It was a miraculous thing God doing it, through working through his Spirit. In the same way; we re not delivered from our enemies by or with our own physical works, right? Its God that puts the spirit in us. It causes us to think like Christ, to be like him. Then the actions will come out. So we can't say I'm delivered of my own works. I'm delivered of God changing my heart in giving me the power, and then he causes the works that are used. So born of a virgin versus born of man is that difference between where the power is coming from that is causing you to overcome. And it is a tremendous difference. It changes everything. Rom 13:13 (ESV) Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy. So when we read this, we immediately think physically; I m not running around having orgies and drunkenness, I m past this one. Wait a minute here, what is this really talking about? What is your relationship to the world? Is that your first priority? Is that where all of your energies are going? Is that where you re thinking all your problems are to get solved? Are you drunk on the doctrine of the world? Or are you really thinking as Christ s mind through his Scriptures? You can be perfectly chaste and have this nice pretty clean outside the cup and be an orgy loving drunk, sexual or immoral person, who s quarreling and jealous. It is not

natural to understand; you really have to pray for wisdom to figure out where these things are hiding inside of us. Eph 5:32 (ESV) This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. [He s talking about marriage] Eph 5:33 (ESV) However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband. When Paul's giving instructions about marriage, he says; But this is the mystery. This is about Christ and the church. All these things we just read were about being faithful and what it's like to commit adultery. Apply it to the church and all of a sudden you'll start seeing your time differently. You'll start seeing your priorities differently and a lot of times will realize it is that our husband or a bride takes the backseat that they're not our priority, a lot of other things are. Then we are getting all worked up and anxious to hurry to get all this stuff done in the world, and we re neglecting our family to our own detriment. But we don't at first just really realize it, but when we realize it and we still continue to do it, that's when the judgment comes, because now all the bad fruit starts to show up. 1Co 10:21 (NKJV) You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the Lord's table and of the table of demons. 1Co 10:22 (NKJV) Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than He? There are two really interesting questions. So drinking of the cup of demons is the same thing as committing adultery. If you're going to drink at the Lord's Table, you have to be faithful to be at his table, eat his food, be in his house, and follow his rules which are where it is. If you want to eat at the table of demons and the table the Lord and think it doesn't matter, He is going to throw you out of the house. HE S going to become jealous over our unfaithfulness and if we had the attitude of What s [HE] going to do about it? Well, is HE stronger than you? You do not want to provoke the King to wrath! It's like poking a lion with a stick; this is not going to end well. But in our ignorance we re not fearful. When naïve we really don t have fear and fear is really a gift. If we really knew the power of the one that we were messing with, you know we would be much more careful to put our time in the right places. This is in the book of Numbers which actually describes the law of jealousy. There was actually a process in the Old Testament when a husband was jealous about what his wife was doing, what they were to go through to deal with the situation. It's very revealing about how God is going to work in our lives to get us to be faithful to our spouse: God and HIS Body. Num 5:11 (NKJV) And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

Num 5:12 (NKJV) "Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: 'If any man's wife goes astray and behaves unfaithfully toward him, Num 5:13 (NKJV) and a man lies with her carnally, and it is hidden from the eyes of her husband, and it is concealed that she has defiled herself, and there was no witness against her, nor was she caught Here she is doing it in secret. So how would he know? You can start to tell when someone's affections are not with you in a marriage relationship; even you can feel it in a business relationship. You can feel it in that you know the fellowship is not there, you can tell if someone's not there, they are but they're not there. So when the husband starts to feel this, it's as if the spirit of jealousy comes upon him, the spirit of jealousy is one that is typically provoked to be there, something happening to provoke it. Num 5:14 (NKJV) if the spirit of jealousy comes upon him and he becomes jealous of his wife, who has defiled herself; or if the spirit of jealousy comes upon him and he becomes jealous of his wife, although she has not defiled herself So you can be righteously jealous for no cause, because you can just be paranoid, right? It can go both ways. Num 5:15 (NKJV) then the man shall bring his wife to the priest. He shall bring the offering required for her, one-tenth of an ephah of barley meal; he shall pour no oil on it and put no frankincense on it, because it is a grain offering of jealousy, an offering for remembering, for bringing iniquity to remembrance. So the whole purpose of this process is to bring this iniquity to the remembrance of the wife, so she can properly deal with it. Num 5:16 (NKJV) 'And the priest shall bring her near, and set her before the LORD. Num 5:17 (NKJV) The priest shall take holy water in an earthen vessel, and take some of the dust that is on the floor of the tabernacle and put it into the water. Num 5:18 (NKJV) Then the priest shall stand the woman before the LORD, uncover the woman's head, and put the offering for remembering in her hands, which is the grain offering of jealousy. And the priest shall have in his hand the bitter water that brings a curse. This is really interesting. Water is typically The Word. It's used for judgment. It s the waters of the flood. Water was used to wash the vessels. Here is the bitter water, the water of judgment. Num 5:19 (NKJV) And the priest shall put her under oath, and say to the woman, "If no man has lain with you, and if you have not gone astray to uncleanness while under your husband's authority, be free from this bitter water that brings a curse.

When you read this study, it is a perfect example of reading the Scriptures, and going through this. If we are being faithful to our spouse, then this water will not bring a curse to us and who can dwell in the everlasting burnings? Who can dwell in the fire? Those that are righteous. Walking righteously and being faithful is a good point, then I should really be even more so that way. Num 5:20 (NKJV) But if you have gone astray while under your husband's authority, and if you have defiled yourself and some man other than your husband has lain with you" Num 5:21 (NKJV) then the priest shall put the woman under the oath of the curse, and he shall say to the woman "the LORD make you a curse and an oath among your people, when the LORD makes your thigh rot and your belly swell; Num 5:22 (NKJV) and may this water that causes the curse go into your stomach, and make your belly swell and your thigh rot." 'Then the woman shall say, "Amen, so be it." When we are walking in this disobedience, this water's going to come, it is going to bring judgment upon us and things are not going to go well for us. Your peace is gone, now you're exposed, the bad fruits can happen and it's for a good purpose that you may be healed and to repent from it. But first it has to be bitter before it can be sweet, so the application of this in the New Testament is what Paul says; 2Co 11:2 (NKJV) For I am jealous for you with godly jealousy. For I have betrothed you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ. 2Co 11:3 (NKJV) But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. 2Co 11:4 (NKJV) For if he who comes preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or if you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted you may well put up with it! 2Co 11:5 (NKJV) For I consider that I am not at all inferior to the most eminent apostles. Paul has gone on to say; that you are believing a gospel l haven't taught you, you're going after these false prophets and the false apostles and that's what he's jealous about. Here Paul is a good faithful husband to his bride the church, is saying; Come back, there is forgiveness, we can have restoration. But you ve got to quit with these others outside the marriage relationship, because it s just destructive and don't bring that back into the house! That's the end of the verses I wanted to go over here. Just always find it amazing how the Lord uses such powerful symbolism to get these points across. HE doesn't use these light little wimpy anecdotal stories. HE picks things that change your life and that will affect you for decades and will tear families apart or and bind them together.

To show us how important the work that he's doing and how seriously he wants us to take it. And what joy there is when there is faithfulness in the house. It is a wonderful place it's really good and when it is not there, it's really bad. And we re going to get to see that played out in the world. The world waxes worse and worse. We re seeing more and more and more of this. We re seeing so much more adultery, fornication and unfaithfulness in the world. The standards are just dropping so much and were going to see this play out. We as a people are to be set apart and different in the way we conduct ourselves. To say; Look this is what it's like when you are faithful, committed and you're not running around with others, this is the good fruit it brings in the long run. It takes us provoking one another, because it's easy to get drug astray, it's easy to get pulled out in the world. We need to go to one another at the right time and to say; Look. I'm jealous over you. Why are you over here doing all of this and you're not here with us? Where are you? What you doing? And that can be a very healing thing to pull someone back again. Because if you don't care enough to say anything. If you don t love your spouse, your attitude is, Do whatever you want. If you really care, you re going to be jealous and do something about it. You can't make a person change, only a change of heart but if they don't change, what do you do? Divorce them. This is the only cause for divorce in the Scriptures. This is fornication, that s why we've had to put people out of our midst. It's for fornicating with false doctrine. They re trying to bring in these harlots and idols into the house. Or they're doing it out there and You can't do both you got to be faithful with us. We can t have this, any more than a husband can allow an open marriage, which is becoming really common today. Open marriages are becoming more normal just as the church is becoming open. The church is saying; What or whoever you are as long as we all love each other and get along then we don't mind all that fornication out there. We, as God's people can't tolerate that. It is not going to produce healthy household or healthy children and is just not conducive to spreading the gospel. That is the end of the study now. If anybody wants to make any comments, please do. International Standard Bible Encyclopedia jel us-i,קנאה) kin'a h; ζη λος, ze los): Doubtless, the root idea of both the Greek and the Hob translated jealousy is warmth, heat. Both are used in a good and a bad sense - to represent right and wrong passion. When jealousy is attributed to God, the word is used in a good sense. The language is, of course, anthropomorphic; and it is based upon the feeling in a husband of exclusive right in his wife. God is conceived as having wedded Israel to Himself, and as claiming, therefore, exclusive devotion. Disloyalty on the part of Israel is represented as

adultery, and as provoking God to jealousy. See, e.g., Deu 32:16, Deu_32:21; 1Ki_14:22; Psa_78:58; Eze_8:3; Eze_16:38, Eze_16:42; Eze_23:25; Eze_36:5; Eze_38:19. When jealousy is attributed to men, the sense is sometimes good, and sometimes bad. In the good sense, it refers to an ardent concern for God's honor. See, e.g., Num_25:11 (compare 1Ki_19:10; 2Ki_10:16); 2Co_11:2 (compare Rom_10:2). In the bad sense it is found in Act_7:9; Rom_13:13; 1Co_3:3; 2Co_12:20; Jam_3:14, Jam_3:16. The law of jealousy is given in Nu 5: It provided that when a man suspected his wife of conjugal infidelity, an offering should be brought to the priest, and the question of her guilt or innocence should be subjected to a test there carefully prescribed. The test was intended to be an appeal to God to decide the question at issue. See ADULTERY; SACRIFICE.
