TEACHER BIBLE STUDY 4 th -6 th Grade Kids Bible Study Guide King Uzziah s death marked the end of an era. His reign had been long and prosperous. Uzziah became king when he was 16, and he reigned over Judah for 52 years. Uzziah had listened to the prophet Zechariah; he feared God and God made him prosper. But Uzziah s pride got the best of him. When he became strong, he grew arrogant and it led to his own destruction. He acted unfaithfully against the Lord (2 Chronicles 26:16). God struck Uzziah with leprosy. Then Uzziah died. Under Uzziah s leadership, God s people had turned away from the promises of God and trusted in the promises of the world around them. God had promised to bless the entire world through Abraham s family, but God s people were rebellious. Instead of blessing, they set themselves up to receive God s judgment. But God s plans and promises were not thwarted. God sent Isaiah to preach a message of hope. Even though God was going to correct His people through judgment, His purpose was one of grace through which God would receive glory. God planned to send a Messiah who would bring salvation to the world. Isaiah 6 opens with Isaiah worshiping in the temple. Then God gave Isaiah a vision. Isaiah saw God sitting on a throne. In the year that King Uzziah died, God was sitting on the throne. God was reigning over the universe. The magnitude of God s holiness made Isaiah realize the magnitude of his own sin. His response? Woe is me! God extended His grace to Isaiah. He took away Isaiah s guilt. God passed over Isaiah s sins because He was going to send Jesus to pay for them. In His death on the cross, Jesus paid for the sins past, present, and future of those who would trust in Him. When we trust in Jesus, God says to us, Your guilt is taken away. Your sin is atoned for. God had chosen Isaiah to take God s message to His people. Isaiah had a special name. The name Isaiah means The Lord saves. God used Isaiah to tell His people a very important message. God s message was this: God saves sinners. God spoke through Isaiah. Isaiah had heard God s voice, but Isaiah had never seen God. One day God gave Isaiah a very special experience. In the year that Uzziah, king of Judah, died, Isaiah was worshiping God in the temple when he had a vision. Isaiah saw God sitting on a throne. God s robe was long; its edges filled the temple. Seraphim heavenly beings stood above Him, each with six wings. They called out: Holy, holy, holy is the Lord; His glory fills the whole earth. The foundations of the doorways shook at the sounds of their voices, and the temple filled with smoke. Isaiah saw that he was in the presence of God, and he said, I am ruined! I am sinful; I am no better than anyone else. I don t deserve to be in the presence of a great and holy God. Then one of the seraphim flew to Isaiah. He had in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. He touched Isaiah s mouth and said, Now that this has touched your lips, your wickedness is removed and your sin is wiped away. Then Isaiah heard God s voice saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? God had an important message to share, and He wanted someone to tell God s message to everyone. Isaiah said, Here am I! Send me. 2

Go, God said. God sent Isaiah to preach to the people. The people will not listen to My message, God said. You will preach to them, but they will ignore you. They will turn away from you. If they would just listen to Me, they would turn from their sin and be healed. How long? Isaiah asked. How long should I preach to people who won t listen to me? How long will they reject Your message and face judgment for it? God answered Isaiah. Preach until the cities are destroyed and no one lives in them. I am going to send the people far away. Some of the people will return to the land, God explained. God was going to show grace to those people like He showed grace to Isaiah. The people God would bring back to Judah would be some of the only people left in Abraham s family. God was going to keep His promise to Abraham through them. He would make their family big again, and they would be a blessing to all the nations. Christ Connection: Isaiah saw God in a vision and he knew he didn t deserve to be with God because God is holy. God forgave Isaiah s sin. One day God would send His Son, Jesus, to pay for Isaiah s sin. God forgives anyone who trusts in Jesus. When we trust in Jesus, we answer like Isaiah: Here I am. Send me. TRANSITION TIME Session Title: God Called Isaiah Bible Passage: Isaiah 6 Big Picture Question: How could Isaiah stand before God? Isaiah could stand before God because God took away Isaiah s sin. Key Passage: Isaiah 53:6 Unit Christ Connection: God s promised Messiah comes out of David s family and is described in Isaiah s prophecy. Welcome time Bible Greet each kid as he or she arrives. Use this time to collect the offering, fill out attendance sheets, and help new kids connect to your group. Review the books of the Bible by naming a book and asking kids to name the book before and the book after that book. Say Today we are going to study one of the major prophets. Who knows the books of the Major Prophets? (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, Daniel) 3

Activity page Table Centers (Miscellaneous Activities) Farmhouse Key Passage / Chapter Matching activity page, 1 per kid Bibles pencils markers Guide kids to complete the activity page Farmhouse Key Passage to locate a message God gave His people. Challenge kids to recall the previous key passage this message describes. (2 Kings 17:13-14) Help boys and girls locate and read the current key passage. Say Today we will learn about another prophet God sent His people. Isaiah 53:6 records part of this prophet s message to the Israelites. God desires for people to follow Him, but people follow many things other than God. As time allows, lead kids to use the Bible to complete the activity page Chapter Matching. Session starter (10 minutes) Option 1: Here I Am game Select one kid to be the first guesser. The kid must stand with his eyes closed and his back turned to the remaining kids. Guide kids to silently select one kid to be the first caller. Allow the kids to spread out around the room. After the group spreads out, instruct the guesser to call out, Who will go? The caller will answer, Here I am. The guesser will open his eyes and make one guess. If he is right, he may select the new caller. If he is wrong, the caller becomes the next guesser. Continue play as time allows. Say What two phrases did we use in our game? Who will go? Here I am. You will hear both of the phrases from our game in the Bible story today. Option 2: Pick It Up Relay plastic tongs, 2 pairs small dark stones oven mitts, 2 Form two teams. Create a pile of stones for each team at a starting point. Say Our dark stones represent pieces of coal. The challenge for your team is to move all of the coal in your pile to the finish line. But you may only move the coals using tongs. Team members will take turns transferring a stone from the starting point to the finish line using a pair of tongs to pick up and carry the stones. If a player drops a stone, allow her to pick it up with the tongs and continue to the finish line. To increase the challenge, kids should also wear an oven mitt. Say Our Bible story today mentions a piece of coal carried by a set of tongs. Listen closely to discover what the coal was used for and why. Transition to large group 4

LESSON Session Title: God Called Isaiah Bible Passage: Isaiah 6 Big Picture Question: How could Isaiah stand before God? Isaiah could stand before God because God took away Isaiah s sin. Key Passage: Isaiah 53:6 Unit Christ Connection: God s promised Messiah comes out of David s family and is described in Isaiah s prophecy. Suggested Theme Decorating Ideas: Wrap several similar size rectangle boxes with yellow craft paper to form hay bales. Stack the hay neatly on one side of the teaching area. Hang a sky blue backdrop. You may wish to paint a farmhouse on the backdrop. Spread green fabric or paper across the floor to create a field to walk in each week. A child-size riding tractor could also be added to the décor. Place a wheelbarrow in one corner of the teaching area. Create a sign for Grow and Go Farm. Gather small pots, metal pails, seed starter containers, and watering cans. Fill some containers with soil or vegetable and herb plantings. You may also place other farming implements such as shovels, rakes, hoes, and trowels in your decoration out of reach of the kids. Scatter old feed sacks (beware of allergies) around the stage. Countdown countdown video (insert provided DVD with lesson videos and worship) Show the countdown video as you clean-up table centers, set up classroom chairs for lesson and set it to end as large group time begins. Introduce the session (3 minutes) leader attire [Large Group Leader enters wearing overalls over a T-shirt, boots or tennis shoes, and a baseball hat.] Leader Hello, farmers! Welcome to Grow and Go Farm. The plants grow and then they go to families around the world. Some people eat the food we grow. We grow flowers that people buy and take home to plant in their yards and gardens. We also sell hay for people to buy to feed their farm animals. Do you know who runs Grow and Go Farm? The farm is owned and operated by the Isaiah family. The Isaiah family has been farming this land for over 100 years. Do you know why Great-Great-Grandpa Isaiah chose to name the farm Grow and Go Farm? Well, he said it reminded him of what Christians and other believers are like. They repent and trust in Jesus as their Savior and Lord. Then they grow to become more like Jesus by reading the Bible, spending time with God, praying, and worshiping God. 5

As Christians grow to be like Jesus, they go tell others about Jesus. Sometimes they go to other countries. Sometimes they go to other states or cities. Sometimes they go to their neighbors, friends, and family. Believers are all about growing and going! Great-Great-Grandpa Isaiah wanted to remember every day that he needed to grow and go, so he named this place Grow and Go Farm. Timeline map (2 minutes) Timeline Map small group visual pack (Additional copies provided for Table Time Review) Leader You would have liked Great-Great-Grandpa Isaiah. He was very kind, very wise, and very humble. And he loved to study the Bible. He really liked to read the Old Testament and look at how God s plan to send Jesus was unfolding. Can you guess what one of his favorite Old Testament books was? Good guess! You are right. He loved to read the Book of Isaiah. Since Isaiah was his last name, I guess he was really interested in what the prophet Isaiah said. Let me show you where Isaiah is in God s plan to send Jesus. Indicate on the timeline today s Bible story about Isaiah. Also point out Abraham, King David, and Jesus resurrection to help kids build the chronology. Key passage (5 minutes) Key Passage Poster: Isaiah 53:6 (11x17 poster, provided) Worship Song: All We Like Sheep (Thank You, God) (on provided DVD) Leader Before we get into our Bible story today, let s look at our key passage. Isaiah wrote our key passage, and in a few weeks we will learn why he wrote the passage. Read the key passage with me. Lead boys and girls to read the key passage and sing All We Like Sheep (Thank You, God). Big picture question (1 minute) 11x17 poster provided Bibles Leader Open your Bibles to Isaiah 6. Isaiah is one of the major prophets. The Book of Isaiah is longer than the books of the Minor Prophets we have studied. Our big picture question today is, How could Isaiah stand before God? Very interesting question! Let s take a look at how God called Isaiah to be His messenger. Tell the Bible Story (8 minutes) God Called Isaiah video Bibles, 1 per kid Bible Story Picture 11x17 poster provided Big Picture Question: How could Isaiah stand before God? 11x17 poster provided Open your Bible to Isaiah 6 and tell the Bible story in your own words, or show the Bible story video God Called Isaiah. Leader Raise your hand if you have heard of the seraphim before. Seraphim are heavenly beings of great power. Isaiah saw them honoring God and praising Him. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord; His glory fills the whole earth. Isaiah recognized that he was standing before a holy, perfect God. Isaiah was a sinful man. He wasn t worthy to stand before God. Remember our big picture question, How could 6

Isaiah stand before God? Isaiah could stand before God because God took away Isaiah s sin. One day everyone will stand before God. Those who have trusted in Jesus have had their sins taken away. They will be able to stand in God s presence and praise Him. God called Isaiah to take His message to the people of Judah. What was Isaiah s response? Here I am. Send me. When we become a Christian by trusting in Jesus, we respond to God by saying, Here I am. Send me. We have a calling or responsibility as believers to tell others about Jesus Christ and His sacrifice for our sins. God s message was for Judah to turn from sin. God told Isaiah that the people of Judah would not repent, but Isaiah was to continue preaching. The people would experience the consequences of their sin, but God would bring His people back. God would keep His promise to Abraham that his descendants would be a blessing to all of the nations. The Gospel: God s Plan for Me (optional) Using Scripture and the guide provided, explain to girls and boys how to become a Christian. Tell kids how they can respond, and provide counselors to speak with each kid individually. Encourage boys and girls to ask their parents, small group leaders, or other adults any questions they may have about becoming a Christian. Sing (5 minutes) Worship Song: Your Love Never Fails (on provided DVD) Leader Even though the Northern Kingdom and the Southern Kingdom would both eventually be destroyed for their sin, God still loved His people. God s love is unfailing. It never fails or is unfaithful. Join me in singing our new theme song Your Love Never Fails. Sing Your Love Never Fails. Discussion Starter Video (5 minutes) Unit 15, Session 1 discussion starter video (on provided DVD) Leader Have you ever played hide-and-seek? Has anyone played with a younger sibling who didn t really understand the rules? Check out this video. Show the Unit 15 Session 1 video. Leader Has anyone played hide-and-seek with someone who did that? Part of the fun of playing hideand-seek with someone like that is that he or she wants to be found. How does that video demonstrate what our relationship with God should look like? When God calls us like He called Isaiah, how should we our respond? Select a few kids to share their thoughts. Prayer (1 minute) Leader How could Isaiah stand before God? Isaiah could stand before God because God took away Isaiah s sin. In a minute, your small group leader will let you know it is time to go to your small 7

group. On the way to your small group, think about how Isaiah responded to God s call. Think about your responses to God. Close in prayer. Dismiss to small groups for Table Time The Gospel: God s Plan for Me Ask kids if they have ever heard the word gospel. Clarify that the word gospel means good news. It is the message about Christ, the kingdom of God, and salvation. Use the following guide to share the gospel with kids. God rules. Explain to kids that the Bible tells us God created everything, and He is in charge of everything. Invite a volunteer to read Genesis 1:1 from the Bible. Read Revelation 4:11 or Colossians 1:16-17 aloud and explain what these verses mean. We sinned. Tell kids that since the time of Adam and Eve, everyone has chosen to disobey God. (Romans 3:23) The Bible calls this sin. Because God is holy, God cannot be around sin. Sin separates us from God and deserves God s punishment of death. (Romans 6:23) God provided. Choose a child to read John 3:16 aloud. Say that God sent His Son, Jesus, the perfect solution to our sin problem, to rescue us from the punishment we deserve. It s something we, as sinners, could never earn on our own. Jesus alone saves us. Read and explain Ephesians 2:8-9. Jesus gives. Share with kids that Jesus lived a perfect life, died on the cross for our sins, and rose again. Because Jesus gave up His life for us, we can be welcomed into God s family for eternity. This is the best gift ever! Read Romans 5:8; 2 Corinthians 5:21; or 1 Peter 3:18. We respond. Tell kids that they can respond to Jesus. Read Romans 10:9-10,13. Review these aspects of our response: Believe in your heart that Jesus alone saves you through what He s already done on the cross. Repent, turning from self and sin to Jesus. Tell God and others that your faith is in Jesus. Offer to talk with any child who is interested in responding to Jesus. 8

TABLE TIME LEADER Session Title: God Called Isaiah Bible Passage: Isaiah 6 Big Picture Question: How could Isaiah stand before God? Isaiah could stand before God because God took away Isaiah s sin. Key Passage: Isaiah 53:6 Unit Christ Connection: God s promised Messiah comes out of David s family and is described in Isaiah s prophecy. Bible story review & Bible skills (10 minutes) Bibles, 1 per kid Timeline small group visual pack Isaiah, the Prophet Megaphone (located in your Table Time Review bin) markers, crayons and colored pencils drawing paper (located in your Activity Choice / Session Starter bins Add the Isaiah, the Prophet megaphone to the Southern Kingdom chart in your classroom. Provide kids with markers, crayons, drawing paper, colored pencils, and other art supplies of your choice. Guide kids to review Isaiah 6 by drawing a picture of the images in Isaiah s picture. Kids may choose to create abstract art or more realistic art. Allow kids to use their imaginations and creativity. As they work, discuss the Bible story and big picture question. Say Why was Isaiah concerned when he realized he was standing before God? Isaiah understood he was a sinner. He was not holy and could not stand in God s presence without his sins being atoned for. What did God call Isaiah to do? God called Isaiah to be a prophet to the people of the Southern Kingdom of Judah. God told Isaiah that the people would not listen to the message he delivered to them. Instead of repenting, the Israelites would continue to sin more and more. How could Isaiah stand before God? Isaiah could stand before God because God took away Isaiah s sin. Who died for Isaiah s sin? (One day God would send His Son, Jesus, to pay for Isaiah s sin. God forgives anyone who trusts in Jesus.) Why do Christians say, Here am I. Send me? What does that mean? Provide kids with an opportunity to think about the question and share their ideas. If you choose to review with boys and girls how to become a Christian, explain that kids are welcome to speak with you or another leader if they have questions. God rules. God created and is in charge of everything. (Genesis 1:1; Revelation 4:11; Colossians 1:16-17) We sinned. Since Adam and Eve, everyone has chosen to disobey God. (Romans 3:23; 6:23) God provided. God sent His Son, Jesus, to rescue us from the punishment we deserve. (John 3:16; Ephesians 2:8-9) 9

Jesus gives. Jesus lived a perfect life, died on the cross for our sins, and rose again so we can be welcomed into God s family. (Romans 5:8; 2 Corinthians 5:21; 1 Peter 3:18) We respond. Believe that Jesus alone saves you. Repent. Tell God that your faith is in Jesus. (Romans 10:9-10,13) Review the unit using the timeline in the small group visual pack. Key passage activity (5 minutes) Tong and Scatter Instructions Key Passage Poster: Isaiah 53:6 (provided) Key Passage cards Tongs (x4) The key passage has been printed on cards. Scatter the key passage cards on a table or floor. Divide the kids into three or four groups. Challenge kids in each group to take turns using tongs to pick up each card and arrange them in order. Every time kids place a new card in order, lead boys and girls to read the part of the key passage they have assembled. Say What does the word iniquity mean? Iniquity is another word for sin. Sin is breaking God s laws. God placed all of our sin on Christ when He died on the cross for our sin. Activity choice (10 minutes) Option 1: Add On Relay 8 ½ x 11 poster of Isaiah 6:3 (x2) Key passage cards (x2 sets) paper bag (x2) whiteboard and dry erase markers The words of Isaiah 6:3 have been printed on cards. A poster of the completed verse is also provided. Place each set of cards in its bag on one side of the room. Divide kids into two teams and guide them to line up single file on the opposite side of the room from the bags. The cards must be gathered in the correct order. The first kid in the line must go to their bag and draw a card. He will read the card. If it is not the first word of the passage, he will return the card to the bag and return to his group. The next player will then run to the bag, draw a card and read it. If it is the first word of the passage, that player will write the first word on their team s section of the whiteboard and place the card to one side. If it is not the next word of the passage, he will return the card to the bag and return to the group. The next player will take his turn and so on until all the words of the passage have been collected in the correct order and written on the whiteboard. The first team to complete the passage will be the winners. Say Who said this verse? (The seraphim heavenly beings said this to each other, Isaiah 6:2-3) How could Isaiah stand before God? Isaiah could stand before God because God took away Isaiah s sin. Instruct kids to take turns completing the phrase Holy, holy, holy is the Lord with a phrase of their choice about God. 10

Option 2: Plantings spray bottle with water drop cloth or tarp small pots seeds soil trowel Provide each kid with an empty pot and seeds. Guide kids to scoop some soil into their pots, place their seeds inside, and cover the seeds with soil. Say How could Isaiah stand before God? Isaiah could stand before God because God took away Isaiah s sin. When we repent of our sins and trust Jesus as our Savior and Lord, we are like the little seeds we just planted. What does a seed need in order to grow into a strong, healthy plant? (water, food, light) What do we need to do in order to grow to be mature Christians, to be like Jesus Christ? (read the Bible, spend time with God, pray, memorize Scripture, go to church) [As kids name an answer, spray one of the plantings with water.] Every time we do one of those things, it s like a spray of water has been given to our seed. But we aren t only supposed to grow. What else are we to do? Hint: It s part of the name of our farm. We are supposed to go tell others about Christ. Isaiah s answer to God was Here I am. Send me. As Christians, our response to God should also be Here I am. Send me. Prayer (5 minutes) Say Think about Isaiah s response to God: Here I am. Send me. Do we always respond the same way? Consider whether God is calling you to do something. What do you think He wants you to do? What is your response? If you don t think God is calling you to do something right now, pray to ask God to help you be willing to say yes the next time He calls you. Invite kids to share prayer requests. Close the group in prayer. Clean-Up Room 11

(Washing dishes in hot, soapy water lifts grease away faster than washing in cold, soapy water. Doctors sterilize instruments at high temperatures.) In Isaiah s vision, a seraph (a winged being) touched Isaiah s lips with a burning coal. This was a picture of cleansing his lips so Isaiah could tell messages from God. We are cleansed by trusting in Jesus. (Note: Seraphim means burning ones. ) Take a picture of your family making hot dogs or s mores and tape it below. God Called Isaiah Isaiah 6 Preschool Key Passage: Isaiah 53:6 Big Picture Question: Why did God call Isaiah? God called Isaiah to warn His people.
